A Species of Ichneumon Wasp - I called it a Scorpion Fly

Taken in North Dakota USA.
This is a Species of Ichneumon Wasp - I called it a Scorpion Fly that was drinking tree sap. However I have been told it is laying eggs not drinking tree sap.

I agree, it is not normal so far north but maybe that comes with the warmer climate. Good think too as they control tree beetles I have heard.

I think what you are looking at is called a type of Ichneumon wasp. It is drilling into the tree to lay eggs on grubs in the bark, which will hatch and eat the grubs from the inside, Alien style.
