Jionji is an ancient temple said to have been established during the Nara period by imperial decree from Emperor Shomu. The temple grounds were designated as a national historic site in 2014 and are home to numerous cultural treasures, including the Main Hall (a National Important Cultural Property), the Sanmon Gate, Yakushi Hall, and a Three-Storied Pagoda, all standing as timeless symbols of its sacred history.
This special 1-night, 2-day program allows participants to immerse themselves in the spiritual and cultural heritage of Jionji, one of Tohoku's most renowned temples for prayer and rituals. The experience includes a dialogue with the chief priest, participation in Jionji Bugaku (court dances of the Hayashi School, designated as a National Important Intangible Cultural Property), sutra copying, Shugendo trekking, and a modernized take on Shojin Ryori, the traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. These activities are designed to help you experience the temple's rich spiritual culture with both body and mind, fostering a profound sense of inner peace and physical well-being.
