I always thought the two best things to come out of the Essentials line were the Rules Compendium and the Monster Vault/DM Kit. The second one is extremely pricey, but I picked up 4 or 5 of the Compendiums for my players relatively cheap a couple of years ago. Even badly treated copies are great for quick look-ups in the moment. Thanks for the videos, and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Happened to stumble upon this channel while researching more about 4E, and was very much drawn in. Your presentation style is very casual yet charming, good stuff. There really needs to be more 4E content on KZbin because the more I learn about it, the more I like it.

I agree that the core DMG is a must-have book. So much in there to spark the DM’s imagination, in addition to the useful advice for running the game.

Have you taken a look at their encounters series? They were made for the LGS players and structured for years of play, you used to go to the shop and they had everything you needed to play weekly. Maps, character sheets, multiple adventures. They were pretty awesome and if you search hard enough you can find some sealed ones on ebay for way too much

DMG1 is an excellently edited collection of advice on how to run an RPG. It provides advice that is useful to running *any* game. I only played 4e briefly, but I've collected the essentials materials and a few others, may take a stab at running it in Roll20. It seems like it would mesh exceptionally well with vtt gaming.

Very funny video and informative. Your humour reminds me of Ricky Gervais a bit. Ive just ordered 4e Core books. I personally think its the best edition. Combat in 5e is dull and abstract. 4e got it right.

Would you please make a video on how to play 4E? I have been playing 5E for 3 years now and am fascinated by 4E and would love to play. However the actual how to videos on 4E seem to be incredibly lacking. Excellent videos and information. Thankyou!

I know that PHB2 does NOT have all the rules for creating characters; one will need either the PHB 1 or the Rules Compendium.

Really nice video! :) I've got a few of the Essentials Books from foreign eBay sellers (sadly nonexistent in Germany) but still missing the Monster Vault and some Adventures which I only have a PDF of ^^ After the 4e Renaissance video I tried to get me a secondhand copy of the normal 4e Players Handbook maybe with Monster Manual. I did not know there are multiple handbooks available. When playing, I sense it could be quite overwhelming as a DM when you allow all of the player handbooks with the amount of options. Is it really? Luckely I found the PDFs as the hard copy books are also nonexistent here. What a shame, I don't really enjoy reading PDFs, I'm more of a physical book person ^^ I've read some of your blog entries, notices the campaign "Sturm und Drang". Do you have sth. scribbled down about it? Maybe sth. you could publish? ;)

I find that I simply let the players be the experts of their own characters and powers. I don't need to know what the powers do (though I can check to leverage some scenario hooks), and the monsters are self contained blocks of fun, so they don't increase complexity, just provide variety. 4e is a clearly codified game, such that these extensions simply bring the richness of options, whilst adhering to the consistent rules framework. Glad you are having some fun delving into the 4e game. :-) If I publish anything for the game it is likely to be in my own setting, to avoid any IP problems. Thanks again, really appreciate your feedback.

Have you read The Slaying Stone? To me, it's the best designed adventure for 4e.

I don’t think one needs to be concerned about the “monster math problem” in the core MM for lower (Adventurer Tier) level monsters. The Monster Vault has the new math, but it does not have a lot of epic tier monsters, and no monster is level 30 or above.

My recommendation is to get the “Essentials” line, plus the core DMG. Heroes of 1&2 Rules Compendium Monster Vault Monster Vault 2 Red Box (for the intro adventure; the pdf does not include scans of the power cards, so it isn’t playable as is, but using characters created using the HotFL/K would work) DM Kit

I own ony the core products, it is hard to find the monster vault here in Brazil. Is there an easy way to fix the monster balance in monster manuals 1 and 2?
