On March 24th 1995 Fred Ivey filmed the running of A stock trains on London's East London Line. This was the last day of operation before the line was closed for modernisation and the construction of Canada Water station. Since then the line has closed again and will finally reopen as part of TfL's Overground network. This is somewhat ironic as between Wapping and Rotherhithe station trains use the Thames Tunnel built by Marc Brunel as the first tunnel under the River Thames.
The line has a long and varied history. At one time freight trains were not uncommon, and through excursions were run by the Metropolitan Railway to South Coast resorts. LBSCR Terriers were often to be seen on the line and it was the last preserve for F stock.
Operation of the passenger service required five trains in the peaks, supplied from a small depot at New Cross. The Surrey Docks (later Quays) station master (for many years the SM was Bernie Jacobs, a much respected Underground man) was in charge of the line. Rules were often bent to ensure the service operated to the timetable.
