Excellent narration Stevie. It is the voice that first draws the listener. And Jennie Goutet, it is the well written words that keeps the listener engaged. Thank you. To date this is by far the BEST book in this genre. I can’t go back to the trivia of balls and gowns. This book could be a biography, maybe that is what I will explore next. You make a fine pair. Thank you.

You might like A Daring Proposal for the Battle of Waterloo - it's more serious than most of my books (and close to my heart). It's still a romance (and it's the third in the Memorable Proposal series). And if you've not yet read Philippa Holds Court that has a slightly deeper tone with what Jack is attempting in Parliament (amidst the balls and gowns). :-) It's the second in the Clavering Chronicles series.

I liked Trudy very much, and Trudy's relationship with her brother Theo. I was steeling myself not to enjoy her since I often go quite within myself when around extremely organized take-charge types, yet she was also noticing, considerate and unfailingly polite to her excellent brother and I adored that dynamic between them.

Thank you Jennie for the intricate detail in this story. Thank you for the ‘trigger’ warning around the psychopathic control employed by Arabellas brother-in-law. It was accurate to the game playing and gaslighting in these relationships. It is not a pleasant topic but I believe more people need to understand how these kind of people gain and keep control. My favourite scene was Rose stepping forward to give information to the ladies. She deserved to be head maid for her loyalty. I felt great satisfaction seeing her fire Nurse Billings. Hooray for Mort, the best bodyguard ever.

Unless I'm wrong, my understanding is that she's only 19-20, which would explain why he keeps her under his thumb and regards her as a child, although that would be very annoying. Sure glad i did not live in those times bc I never had the mommy urge, never had kids, too independent to marry, probably would have been shoved to the fringes of society. Likely would move to the New World to make my own way

In Great Britain, marriages between a woman and her husband's brother were forbidden from 1560 to 1907. So the brother-in law could not make such a proposal to the heroine.
@JennieGoutet
@JennieGoutet 11 ай бұрын
It happened but the marriage could be easily voided so it was a risk for those attempting it. A man who had some power of wealth and persuasion could find a way. www.regencyresearcher.com/pages/marriage.html Marriages could be annulled if a man or woman married within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity or affinity. These marriages weren’t illegal altogether but could be easily voided. A clergyman had the privilege of refusing to conduct the ceremony in which a man was marrying his deceased wife’s sister or a widow her husband’s brother.

Ms Goutet, I do believe you should be aware that it was against the law for a Brother In Law to marry his brothers widow. That law did not change until the middle of the 1900s like 1960s.
@JennieGoutet
@JennieGoutet Жыл бұрын
Rachel Knowles from Regency History .net clarifies this better than I could. During the Regency period, the marriage between a widower and his wife’s sister, or between a widow and her husband’s brother, was valid but voidable. It was forbidden under ecclesiastical law but not illegal until the passing of the Marriage Act in 1835. It could be voided or annulled if successfully challenged by any interested party, at any time during the marriage, provided both husband and wife were still alive.
@shahmanz
@shahmanz Жыл бұрын
The brother in law knows this, he even acknowledges that its a marriage that could be challenged in court. But he does say something like who's to tell the authorities if you keep quiet... I think it was a strange law, makes no sense to me. What God Permits how can man prohibit?

Unfortunately, did not like this story, both hero and heroine were weaklings, especially the heroine, so naive and meek and a martyr. Honoria and Philip in the first book were so much better. Supporting characters brought much life to an otherwise bleak and depressing story. Stopped so many times but decided to persevere to the end per someone’s comment that it gets better. Writing is great, since it was able to evoke strong emotions, and will continue to read the other books.
