Julia and I are out for a stroll around the wooded area at Hooksway in West Sussex, a few miles north of Chichester and close to Chilgrove.
We start at The Royal Oak pub and take a short circular walk alongside beautiful autumn woodland through the East Dean Estate. En-route, we discover a delightful fairy ring of fungi.

Hi Richard the memorial was for a German pilot who was shot down during the battle of Britain. I walked past that too when I walked the South downs way earlier this year Sandy

Enjoyed your lovely Fall walk! The Royal Oak & that cottage were quit lovely old buildings!😍 I live in a very damp environment here in the Pacific NW (USA) so have seen all kinds of fungi growing about; but nothing like that! Usually scattered about or in huge clumps - never in a a single file line going on forever! That was crazy!!!!

Thank you for this Richard. It was nice to see these paths which I've only ever seen on the map. I once walked past Telegraph House which was on the map at the start. Sorry Ive not been around for quite a while. I became very unwell with mental health problems the past year. Amazing to see that you're still producing these great videos. Thanks.

Hi Richard As a teenager in the late '60s I remember being served back then by the old landlord of the Royal Oak from a big jug, and sitting on old wooden benches. At that time it was the only pub in West Sussex that I knew of where you were still served beer from a jug. There is a very tenuous link here between this vlog and your Beach House Park vlog: when chatting with the old landlord of the pub, way back then, he told me that he went to school (around 1900 I think) at the old Lyndhurst Road school in Worthing, and Lyndhurst Road of course runs past Beach House Park. Incidentally, in the 1960s I was living just around the corner from Beach House Park, and just off Lyndhurst Road.

Hi David. My kids went to Lyndhurst primary school, not sure if that is the same one. Fascinating to learn you were served via a jug - how wonderful that that old traditional survived until the 60s. Thanks for the comments.

@@RichardVobes Hi again Richard I think you are referring to the school at the east end of Lyndhurst Road, the 'old' school was at the west end of Lyndhurst Road next to where the big gasometer was sited. I seem to remember that the old school housed some part of the social security services for some time around about the 1980s. Thanks for your interesting and evocative vlogs for ex-Worthing-ites.

A little note from the US, each year that mushroom ring will grow out further . Scientist studying fungus here in Michigan discovered that one mushroom, through DNA, was the same some 200 miles apart. The mushroom we see is actually the flower of the plant or root

Lovely video. Agree the area is lovely. Heres a bit of info : The memorial is for a pilot shot down in the Battle of Britain and reads: In Memoriam Hauptmann Joseph Oestermann Pilot 1915-1940. Oestermann's Junkers JU-88 was shot down by a pilot from RAF Tangmere on the very first day of the Battle of Britain - 13th August 1940. Oestermann's two fellow crewmen bailed out, survived and were captured. The short operation life expectancy and incredible risks run by the brave airmen of the Battle of Britain is illustrated by the fact that Pilot Officer Mayers, the RAF pilot who is believed to have shot down the JU-88, was himself blasted out of the sky later the very same day and had to ditch in the English Channel. Mercifully P/O Mayers survived.

When I was a kid in the early 50s in Preston . Lancs there is a wood on the outskirts called Squire Andertons Wood , very secluded with a stream and a house at the far end ., the wood had many varieties of trees including Beech some of which ere enourmous well over 100 ft high and a girth of 12 feet at least . fantastic trees

@@RichardVobes Just checked the Squires Wood , the Beech have gone !! how long is the life of a Beech Tree ? they must have been old when I saw them in the 50s , unless they were felled for an obscure reason , I live in Thailand so how did I find out , ? well I typed in Squire Andertons Wood Preston on you tube , lo and behold a guy on a bike rode through the woods filming as he went, The Beech were on the right as you entered , gone !!!
