I remember flipping through Nintendo Power and seeing those screenshots back in the day! I always assumed Return to Dreamland was simply that Gamecube game on the Wii, but... I never ended up playing that game, so I had no idea it was so different!! I also never really went back to those screenshots until watching this video today, and now I also dream of the Kirby game that could've been. There's something about that Gamecube style that's aged a little better than Wii graphics
@SuperWiiBros082 жыл бұрын

Kirby's return to dreamland will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first game I ever really played all the way through, hard mode and everything. The plot was fucking amazing for litte kid dipshit me, and having played other games since i think that it is the most allround good game in the seires. Good video, I love seeing pointless trivia about things i like
@pearshapedbrain4 жыл бұрын
seeing what it could have been is so weird, and i wonder if it would have made my opinion of it any different
@kholdkhaos64ray11 Жыл бұрын
My assumption for why Kirby GCN didn't really appease their quality causing them to change it to Return to Dreamland is because the camera and environment weren't really suited for multiplayer play. Look at the camera angle for the robot boss for example. The angle to that would be crazy with 4 players trying to fight it with all the ability effects going. As they kept going, they probably thought standardizing the level design and flattening it out was more appropriate for that type of co-op game. They might have also thought that if they were going to do that, they might as well tailor the aesthetic to be more nostalgic to games that looked like that such as the Adventure, Super Star, and Dreamland games. I have no sources to back that up, but that's just my theory

Holy shit I remember that Kirby Trailer!! I was obsessed with Crystal Shards as a kid and I can't count how many times I rewatched that trailer
@Klaire_Fluffle4 жыл бұрын
Having also done a stupid amount of research into this game, especially back when we were given hope that it may someday be released, I agree with most of this. I don't quite know if I'd say I see Kirby 64 2 as much as I'd say Kirby 64 with "combat", so to speak, of Super Star. The way you move around with copy abilities in Kirby 64 is far too different from the way they work in Super Star for me to see Kirby GCN as another Kirby 64. That said, I fully agree with the dynamic camera angles and the feeling of being in an actual world are absolutely influenced from Kirby 64. I feel like this game had a lot of influences from other Kirby media, but the two strongest were Super Star and 64. That's why I, at least, can't see Return to Dream Land or Star Allies as the finished product of this game. They're very Super Star, they're very not Kirby 64. As far as what was said in the video, again, very well done, but I have to mention the gap between Kirby 64/the reveal trailer for Kirby GCN, and Return to Dream Land. It was pain all around, but do you remember that before Epic Yarn was revealed at E3, as they were building up to it, they used some of the promotional art from this game? It's why the Epic Yarn trailer felt wrong to a lot of people back then. They built up this Kirby game, and then we got Epic Yarn. Love that game, but it stung. I was half expecting you to bring it up when talking about the wait for this game and the eventual Return to Dream Land, and you didn't, so I disliked the video. jk I liked it of course and I'll share it because it's very well done !

@miimiiandco3 жыл бұрын
I believe Kirby GCN was scrapped, but many of it's assets were reused for Adventure Wii. The music from the trailer is The Arena theme, some of the backgrounds are re-used (thank you to torkirby's trivia video), HRD3 (the robot from the trailer) is in the game, and the game showcases Super Star-like abilities, like in Adventure Wii. Even Water is there - Water being a fan ability for the anime. The design of Water in Kirby GCN seems like a middleground between that and Adventure Wii.
@Legoluigi263 жыл бұрын
Return to Dreamland and the games that came after it truly are wonderful, but there's something undeniably special about Kirby GCN. Hal has given many nods to it, with how much of it is left in RtDL, the return of Morpho Knight, the Trailer Theme being triumphantly used in Supreme Ruler Coronation, and the whole friend system of Star Allies being a homage; I do appreciate these, don't get me wrong, but it's not quite the same. Perhaps it's the slightly grungier graphics of the GCN era, but nothing could truly ease the phantom pain of this game. Would I want to trade Kirby's streak of hits in the 2010s (and hopefully beyond) for Kirby GCN? Probably not, but I still find this game fascinating.
@danielostrowski8562 жыл бұрын
I’ve just played through 64 for the first time on NSO, and the 2.5D style of it is really striking and lovely. It’s such a shame that because GCN never released we’ve never got a Kirby like that since 64, and now with Kirby becoming an actual 3D platformer, I wonder if we ever will

Fun fact: the music used in that trailer can be heard also in Return in Dreamland. The music plays when you fight a boss in the arena.

Return to Dream Land and Star Allies were on opposite sides of the spectrum of the multiplayer argument. Return to Dream Land worked fine in singleplayer, but wasn't balanced for multiplayer. Star Allies was almost exclusively designed around multiplayer, but is weakened by playing alone. Also the comment about the natural looking level design, that's what they would end up doing for Forgotten Land. I love the theory that every single Kirby game ever made share connective tissue.

3D was done with Forgotten Land(and hopefully more down the road), Story Book style with Return to Dreamland Deluxe, so all we need to complete the Kirby GCN recycled concepts are: HR-D3 appearing in the Main Story, not Extra Mode, preferably while keeping Dedede good, not evil. Pink Forest. Dynamic Camera Angles(which was done to an extent in the 3DS games). Canyon level replacing Desert. And the enemies exclusive to Kirby Air Ride returning, since Air Ride didn't have a story it's non-canon.

Return to Dream Land uses the pop-up book aesthetic of the third project, with 3D assets from Kirby (Untitled) and 2D UI elements from that 3D Kirby game to give off that look, which in the end it made it look like a mash of elements that just sorta happened. Star Allies has the return of the helpers with a bigger focus on multi-player, but its single-player campaign is left in shambles as a result, making it pretty quick to finish. There have been instances where these ideas have resurfaced over to see the light again: the 3D project would see a new light in Kirby’s Blowout Blast, emphasizing on how inhaling and spitting enemies works in a 3D field, and Battle Royale, where it’s the same but with copy abilities. The music of Kirby (Untitled) was repurposed, most likely, for Return to Dream Land, new powers and appearances of those have surfaced back in new games, such as Water and Bomb’s new party hat. And... call me crazy, but a Kirby game where you explore a world with dynamic camera angles, a nice story with some really crazy ludonarrative dissonance, places that do feel like actual places like factories, ruins, etc., to me, that game is Planet Robobot. And you’re totally allowed to call me crazy on that. Fantastic video, I remember checking Nintendo’s older website basically every month to see new info on Kirby (Untitled) until it was not there one day anymore, saddest day of my 2008 me.
