I am also pregnant (2 days past my due date actually) and I really appreciate that you are still out in the garden working but that you also aren't afraid to grab a chair and do some work in a comfortable position. I have been working hard to get my garden going before the baby arrives - it is my first! And I hope that once the baby is here, I will feel good enough to still get out there and water and plant some of my tomatoes and peppers that are waiting for the last frost date to pass. However, I know my husband will pick up the slack for a few weeks if necessary while I recover!

If I lived close by I would be so willing to help you. Since I don't, I'll pray for strength and endurance for all of your family. I added another good size raised bed. I'm a Grandmother, I get tired more easily. But watching you garden pregnant, your an amazing person. You've motivated me to keep pushing forward. If I have to stop and take a break, I do. As long as I keep going I'm one step closer to my goal. Wishing your family an abundant harvest. Have a blessed day.

You and your kids look like you're having so much fun in the gardens! These videos are so educational for us viewers to see, but you're also creating lasting memories for your kids to look back on once they have their own families in the future. This sort of knowledge and experiance is invaluable and incredibly enriching. Food for the soul _and_ the body. Wishing you all well! "To garden is to believe in tomorrow."

I'm soooo behind on my garden. I'm in a warmer climate but this year we've had way more rain than we've had in years which turned my garden into a jungle. I've slowly been clearing everything out. My seeds I started in Feb got knocked off the picnic table by some puppies we were fostering so I'm behind on tomatoes and peppers. I'm not stressing about it. It is what it is and we will get tomatoes and peppers eventually lol

Maybe you can rest the beds for a bit (3 or 4 weeks?) cover and let everything die underneath? Move asparagus somewhere else while you kill the weeds in that bed. I love how Charles Dowding does next to no weeding. The Hollar Family has heavy red clay, and they keep amending with compost, and it becomes fluffier every year. Hopefully, so will yours, in time. Have you watched the Red Garden? He has a very interesting video about using urine (diluted 10:1) as fertilizer, with spectacular results.

All the diigent work that you, Rebecca, and your family has done over the past few years, has and will help immensely this year while you have to take it a little easier. It is wonderful that it is a family endeavor. 🤎💚💛 Your children will always remember and never forget what they have learned. Sometimes we, as parents & me a Grama) don't get recognition and then you will get your reward when your grown children ask you 'hey mom what did we do for this & that' ! That's an invasive Asian jumping worm that your son's found. You can see it in the shot where it crawls towards the camera, that the band is sunken and gray instead of raised and pink. They devastate garden soil. I hope no smaller ones made it in with that mulch.

I have a question: Would you please tell me, step by step, how to set up a garden like yours? Please? I know you plow and till, but what do you do next? Mark out the beds? Then plant the cover crops? Like if you weren't going to put food in it this year how would you help it (we have clay soil too) and get it ready to go for next season? You can email me if you want to. Just let me know if you would rather do that or just answer me here would be great. I know how to grow things, but this clay stuff has me stumped. I have grown in Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, and now I'm trying to grow in Alabama. HELP PLEASE!!! Thanks so much for all you do. Praying for you and the baby and everyone. Be safe and Love well.

At what year do you break even, money wise? Seems there is so much to buy whether for infrastructures, fencing, soil amendments, pressure cooker, jars, paying for extra water, electricity, gas. Maybe you don't or someone wouldn't and its just about the health benefits of growing your own and knowing that its safer to consume. I know everyone is different with what they want to do, what they have to buy but didn't know if there is some average; like with solar panels they say takes about 8years to break even. They don't know how much electricity anyone uses. You have such a large production and I wouldn't come close to what you do but I am curious for myself if I need to look for more cheaper ways to do things or if I will break even after the first couple of years of getting everything up and running which I could handle. Thank you for your time and videos!

On our small homestead (2/3 acre) prior to moving to our current property- we made back our money the first year we did a garden. But it was a combination of no longer buying processed foods and gardening that made our grocery bill drop. We were saving $700 a month. Prior to that I was buying the highest quality ingredients I could find so our monthly grocery bill was somewhere in the ballpark of $1400 for the six of us…. And this was when my kids were little! When we did our first garden we were able to get a lot of free inputs or very affordable ones. Our biggest cost was fencing, cedar raised beds (which aren’t necessary), and water came from the city so it was expensive. We easily made that all back. But all the little extras like kitchen tools, extra garden tools, came slowly we added a little more each year.

Yes, I actually wasn't sure if it was an asian jumping worm or not, that's why it got fed to the chickens :) It was definitely WAY different than any other worm I'd ever seen and I wasn't super keen on introducing a new species if it was the not beneficial type.

Great job :) As for the worm. You might want to look up Asian jumping worm. It was hard to tell in the video but it appeared that the clitellum was not raised. Between that, it’s size and it’s movement it’s probably a good thing you fed it to the chickens.

I was thinking the same thing. The Asian jumping worm is invasive and not one you want in your soil.
@andreamortimer2610
@andreamortimer2610 Жыл бұрын
I believe you are right! Was the first thought that came to my mind when I saw the size and the white clitellum. From Cornell Extension: "One telltale sign of an infestation is a very uniform, granular soil created from worm castings. The texture of this soil is often compared to coffee grounds. When you scratch the top layer of soil you will see the worms thrashing about with an erratic, snakelike movement. These worms, which can reach 6 inches in length, are much more active than European nightcrawlers. The Asian jumping worm can be found on the soil surface and in the leaf litter, making them easy to find. They can live anywhere from urban parks and suburban backyards to rural forests. You are also very likely to find them in compost piles and along roads. The Asian jumping worm has a prominent band around the body of the worm, called the clitellum, where cocoons are produced. The band completely encircles the body, is milky white to light gray, and is flush with the body; the body looks metallic. On European nightcrawlers, the clitellum is raised or saddle-shaped and reddish-brown in color and does not wrap entirely around the body."

I bet your bed feels like heaven when you get in it at night! I like to add the mulch, then plant the plants in a hole through the mulch - seems easier to me to just pull the mulch aside as I dig the plant hole and leave it aside after inserting the plant. Like a chimney. One year I did that using two flakes of hay down the whole roll of broccoli and it worked so well. The had acted like insulation and I just laid a board across the top when it was going to frost - was so surprised and happy with the results.
