As much as I like the current Hypercar and LMDh classes in endurance racing I still miss the variety of the engines from the Group C era as well as the GT1 class of the 2000s. NA V12s, NA V10s, turbocharged flat 6s, turbocharged inline 5s, turbocharged rotary engines etc all helped to give each endurance racer their unique identities during the Group C days.

Which current hypercar class engine do you like?

@@christian_urocar the Alpine A424. I think it's the current best sounding car until Aston Martin supposedly arrives with their V12 powered Hypercar in 2025. I also have a sneaking suspicion that Red Bull will take the upcoming Red Bull RB17 road car to Le Mans and that car will be powered by a V10 engine.

@@Spectrolite1 Mazda was the only one to use turbocharged rotary engines during the Group C era starting with the 717C and ending with the 787B and they used 2 rotors, 3 rotors and 4 rotors (the 757 was the only one powered by a 3 rotor engine, the cars prior to the 757 were powered by 2 rotor engines and the cars after the 757 were powered by 4 rotor engines).

After the WSC championship in 92' and the Le Mans win in 93', Jean Todt wanted to bring Peugeot into F1 as a full-on competitor. Peugeot's board of directors, however, rejected the idea which is partly why Todt left Peugeot for Ferrari. It makes you wonder if Peugeot had a sliver of chance in F1 if the board of directors approved a dedicated Peugeot F1 team, instead of just an engine supplier.

Memories, I wasn't doing any mechanical or engineering but I did work in the manufacture where they assembled those engines as well as WRC R&D in Vélizy in the Paris western suburb. By far the cleanest place I worked in my life. I have 3 velocity stacks from one of those V10 from my time there.

Ayrton's words after testing it were that the engine was Championship material, said them with an ear-to-ear grin. Mika was of the same opinion. But the thing was denied to happen because Ron Dennis wanted a present manufacturer and Chrysler was this close to pulling away. The plug was effectively plugged shortly after because the head of the engine project felt straight out insulted by Dennis' behavior and closed down the program out of spite. Recently, someone who worked at McLaren at the time revealed in his autobiography that Ron Dennis had already documets signed with Peugeot for the supply and wanted the tests with Lambo to fail. So Dennis deserved his team to crawl 'til Mercefes came.

Peugeot should have performed much better in F1 then was the case, at least capable of snatching a few wins here and there. Would say its poor run in F1 in the mid-1990s was also a reflection of Peugeot's road-cars slide into mediocrity during the late-1990s from the 206, 1007, 307, 407 and 607. Which begs the question, what exactly happened at Peugeot to cause such a fall?

Eddie Jordan always struggled with obtaining necessary funding for the teams endeavour in keeping up with the big three (McLaren, Ferrari & Williams)💰 It should also be noted that Prost's AP01, AP02 & AP03 were awful cars with atrocious gearbox (it also bared name Prost, it was codeveloped with Xtrac) that was not only horrendously failure prone, but also morbidly obese🔬

If such a figure is available, I always put it there. I myself like to know the compression ratio figure. Something around 12:1 seems plausible for this engine.

and i give my respect to lamborghini to be the only manufacturer to still compete with V10 until 2030 EV regulation come. Yeah, i know Audi still racing but they just don't want to take part in the big events like IMSA and 24 hours of Lemans. Long Live V10 and if they ae come back in the future i hope lamborghini is the first one to make the step

Senna would have drug the Lambo powered McLaren over the finish line by it's ears if he had to! Missed opportunties. Too bad. I miss the excitement and sound of the prehybrid F1 cars. Next I lose Indycar to hybrids. Going to be down to Motogp and Nascar....
