Thanks for the very fun puzzle. It made me mentally juggle more than I'm used to, even after using colors, letters, corner, and center marks, but I did solve it. I was surprised that while some of the logic was similar, Simon did quite a bit out of the order I did. I focused on column 6 a lot more than he did, and I focused on box 5 and 8 before locking down box 7. I didn't even touch box 3 numbers (other than R1C7) until the very end and he did that one in the middle. Goes to show that every time you think a puzzle is fairly linear, great minds do not indeed think alike. lol (Either that or I don't have a great mind, but I'd like to think it is at least above average as tested.)

@@jdyerjdyer Fairly linear? To me, the odd thing about these great Sudoku puzzles is the extent to which there is so often only a single path (witth minor variations) leading to solution. I grew up solving math puzzles, and one of the great attractions to me was the way in which there could be multiple solutions of a completely different nature...the same puzzle could be solved with linear algebra, complex analysis, or number theory. Sudoku is very much the opposite; and yet none the less charming for all that. Having said that, I will agree that the present puzzle has a fairly large number of alternate logical breakdowns at various points, all tied in to the larger framework of the constraint on column 6. Really enjoyed the puzzle. You're not a relation of Jay Dyer the creator are you?

Quite a difficult puzzle with some very genius setting and logic. I think Simon did a great job not only solving the puzzle but being able to keep us along for the ride. His way of explaining logic enables most of us to be able to follow along even though doing the puzzle personally would be much too difficult. This puzzle is definitely a bookworthy edition if this channel does put out another book.

One thing Simon missed for a long time: he worked out there had to be 1234 in the column-6 parts of the 3-cell purple and yellow cages. Those pointed down at the 6-cell green cage, which also needed 1234, and that tells you exactly which cells the 1234 go in (not the order though). That immediately gives a 1234-quad in Box 8, etc.

That's how I solved it. Realized there was a virtual 56 cell and a virtual 789 cell in column 6 box 8 in the two green cells (which I also whittled down to 56 and 78, because 5+9+1+2+3+4=24, too large).

I'm quite happy to have been able to solve this without having any peek into the video first. (Took me about 3 hours, but I did it.) WIth the benefit of one who has already gone through the logic of the puzzle, i observed that Simon at around 35:00 was *so* close to getting the values of purple and yellow down to 8 and 9, but then lost track and only ruled out 5 from r4c45. Why do I think this? He had already just noticed that 8 could not go into r78c6, it clearly could not be in r2-6c6, so it had to form a pair with the 9 already in r19c6, and these were the values of yellow and purple... Still he got there eventually in a somewhat more convoluted way as usual (,which is very forgivable in a puzzle of that complexity).

Done in 72:25, again with much help with the video. Watched to 52:47, which was more than I needed cos I realised that I could solve the 2-cell killer cage in box 1 since r2c2 could not have a 1 in it, making the cell a 3 (so my hint time is more accurate to whenever the 1 in r6c2 was placed due to Simon's use of the Secret). I had the 8 in r7c8 placed already, which helped fill out much of the right side of the puzzle, but I can't remember why or how I got that well before Simon. Overall, this was a very fun puzzle that I enjoyed solving :D

Such a great video and puzzle! I took a look at the puzzle before watching, to think through for myself what the questions were likely to be. I find that even if I have no hope of solving the puzzle on my own, I often can be quite close to right on how to approach it if I just give it a good think. I have enjoyed the other puzzles that we have had on this channel with these rule sets that present a limited number of unknowns (such as the cage totals in this puzzle). And as Simon says, this was a very beautiful logical path throughout - difficult (evidently - I cannot say that from first-hand experience, believe me), yet not brutal, and fun and interesting. Thanks, Jay Dyer, for this puzzle and letting all of us watch Simon enjoy it. Also, I always marvel when I look at the progress of the video how quickly the end game of most puzzles goes. This was no exception to that observation - with about 3.5 minutes left in the video, there were still 35 digits at least to put into the grid. Suddenly they all cascaded into place, which is a satisfying thing to watch (especially as Simon's voice gets filled with that satisfied sound that he gets). Two other points: the bird song was really lovely - thank you for sharing your springtime with those of us who are already in summertime weather and therefore (in the South of the US at least) do not have our windows open but are running our AC! And finally, the bonus video of the cryptic crossword is not at all Schadenfreude-producing. It is brilliant with just one little letter wrong in the end. Thanks so much, Simon, for this video!

Apologize if this repeats another comment, but I didn't see it in a quick scan. Looking at the puzzle state at 35:43, I thought the simplest way to move forward was: Where do the digits r4c4 and r4c5 go in column 6? Can't go in box 5, can't go in r1c6 or r9c6 because those are the purple and yellow single digits. Most auspiciously, can't go together in r7c6 and r8c6 because by comparison to the box they are in, the remaining 4 digits in the big green box would have to add to 9! Ergo one of the digits in r4c4 and r4c5 most go in r2c6 or r3c6, and the only possibility is a 6.

13:41. Yellow digit is in r2c5. And the purple digit is in r1c6. 16:51 Yellow could be in the purple cage or visa versa with a 126/9 situation so it could be c5r3 for yellow digit.

How do you know yellow is in r2c5 at 13:41? At this stage, I don't see how you know it's not in r1c5 (if cage green) or r3c5. (I know the logic that limits r3c5 to 1 or 2 is available, but Simon hasn't done this step at this point.) Oh, wait. Did you just correct yourself with the 16:51 comment? They appear contradictory. 🙂

Here's the trick I spotted, which opened it all up. It relies on the tension between the green domino in box 5 and the green domino in C6. You have a 9 in a 3-cell 22/23 cage, so the balance is 13/14, and must include the digit from 78 that is not in purple or yellow ) lets call this X. The green domino at the bottom of C6 consists of the digit from 56 that is not in the 5-cell run above, and X. However in C6, the domino must be less than the one in box 5, or we'd have four cells which have to sum to 9 or less. The largest digit that can go in green in box 5 is 6, therefore the C6 cells must include 5, and the box 5 cells must include 6. This gives a 126 in purple in box 2, making purple 9. Yellow in C6 is 134 and 8 at the bottom, leaving 57 in green, and the 7 joins the 6 in box 5, making green 22. B must be 1, and the balance in the large cage is 234. The effect is the same as your break-in, but I think the logic is a tad cleaner, and gets there quicker. How could you leave 3 as an option in R7C9? It's an 8 or 9 cage, with only 23 in the other cell.

There was an easier way to figure out purple. You knew you had to have 1 2 3 4 in purple and yellow on column 6, and you had to have 1 2 3 4 in green in Box 8. The only placas for 1234 in green were in Box 9 and column 5. That would get you a 1234 quadruple on column 5 and a 5 on blue in box 5, which would get you the 1234 in the yellow box, making purple a 9.
@tabris1135

wouldn't ir be way easier at the 15 minute mark? figuring out that purple is 6 seems pretty easy. purple cannot be 7 8 or 9 there, as that would break the yellow single cell, due to the purple cell-total being included in the 3-cell yellow cage. Edit: nvm, the cage is not necessarily yellow. my bad

the other way is once Simon figures out the 6789 quadruple in Box 5, we know that Green+Purple+Yellow= 39. In box 8, knowing R7C4 = R8C7 this sets R8C4 equal to 6, which by Sudoku puts a 6 in Purple in Box 2, so Purple must be 126=9

8:45 Notice the single-cell cage to the left, and figure out that your purple-yellow cell must be yellow. (The other must be purple.) Also, the two green regions give a narrow region for the possible green sums. 14:20 I'm calling the purple digit B. I placed B in the top of that row. 15:30 Blue is "at least ten" -- and at most 17, because there's a blue two-cell cage. (Sorry, if I'd listened another few seconds...) 29:25 No, 5 isn't necessary. 123467 adds to 23. (I'm calling E the yellow or purple version of 78. F is the other version.) 36:40 F is my name for the 7 or 8 that goes in the green in row 4. From your pencil marks, green sums to F + 15. So put 12345 and F in the other big green, and it works. You fix a 6 in the box, and disambiguate a number of things by forcing 6s elsewhere.

Fun puzzle. I think I beat you to precisely one deduction. Late in the solve you had box 9 pencil marked with a 236 in the last cell. Doesn't the secret limit that cell to one of two CONSECUTIVE numbers? So it's not a 6 ... That means ...

Hey can someone explain why the B number has to appear in green 6 cell cage (around 25:30)? From what I understand, r8c7 can very well be a different digit from B
@lightstar86
@lightstar86 2 жыл бұрын
The green cell cage can be expressed as 6 cells or 3 cells, so its total has to be from 21 to 24. Whichever total it is, the 6-cell green cage must contain 1 and 2 so it must contain B. B has to appear in c5r3 and in c6r2-6. That means the only place B can appear in the 6-cell green cage is r8c7

Strange how Simon disproves an 8 in column 6 in the 6 cell green cage 35:04 but does not ask where the 8 goes in that column. ie either the yellow cell or the {A} cell (magenta) It would have narrowed down the options for yellow and magenta and give him the green pair in box 5.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 2 жыл бұрын
At this point, hasn't he only disproved 8 in column 6 in the 6 cell green cage under the hypothesis of there being a 5 in green in box 5? (From @34:30) All he's heading for at this point is to disprove this hypothesis.

Simon: there *is* really a *lot* cleaner and simpler logic to get you from about 18:00 to about 42:00 ! Those numbers in *r1c6* & *r9c6* really _should _ be doing you a lot of favours... We know the *green* total is between 21 and 24 and that the numbers in the purple and yellow 3-cages are between 1 & 6. So, what can go in *r7c6* + *r8c6* ? Well, you already know that you have a *yellow* cage in *c6* (at r9c6) and also the (total) value of *purple* at *r1c6* ; you also have the whole of both a both purple and a yellow 3-cage in *c6* with the sole exception of one single cell (r3c5, the one you have labelled B) whose value must be at least 1. Therefore ( *by the secret!* ), the sum of *r7c6* + *r8c6* is 45 - ( *yellow* + *purple* + *yellow* + *purple* - B ), i.e. it is at the very least 46 - 2( *yellow* + *purple* ) Now, the total for *green* is at least 10 more than this (because green has four other cells) so we have a lower bound for *green* that depends on *yellow* + *purple* and decreases as they increase: • if *yellow* + *purple* is 15 or less then the *green* total would be 26+ and so too big to fit in three cells • if *yellow* + *purple* is 16 (9+7) the the *green* total would be at least 24 - but then your central green 3-cage would need to be 9,8,7 so no go! So now we know that *yellow* + *purple* must be *17* (the maximum possible) giving a *green* total of *22* , that *B* must indeed be *1* , and everything else is quite tightly constrained. 😁 This logic is really a lot simpler when you look at it in the grid than when it is typed out: essentially you have two times the totals *yellow* and *purple* in *c6* (minus one single cell) and *green* must total to at least 10 more than whatever is left over...
