Hi there! Yes, we've been to Köln a few times. Beautiful city, you are right. I still remember being there when the CSD was going on, by accident. We just wanted to stay a night in Köln because we'd taken our daughter to a concert there, I mean, we drove her there, and, it being quite a ride (we're from Lüneburg), we decided to stay for the night. We did not know that the whole city was a party zone then, so...not too much sleep.... Instead, we had a fantastic evening/night at the river with a couple of beers and something to eat. Quite a few beers, to be honest... So, the next morning, instead of driving home right away, we went up the Kölner Dom, once we were there. I still remember that I nearly collapsed on the way up... It's a very narrow and steep staircase inside the Dom...no elevator or anything. So, if you visit Köln the next time, you should try that, the Dom climbing thing and the wine/beer river Rhein picnic chilling thing.

Hello! That's funny, because we accidentally visited Hamburg during CSD (we weren't prepared for how crowded the city was!). It was so much fun, though. I was able to see the inside of the Kölner Dom on this visit for the first time, but we didn't go up the steps. I'm not sure if it was opened. Yes, I'm sure I would do the same! 😅 I saw a lot of people enjoying themselves by the Rhein. Maybe I'll be able to do that next time. 😊

France annexed all parts of Germany west of the Rhine river due to the Revolutionary Wars from the 1790s on, making itself immensely unpopular with the Germans. Then Napoleon made everything even worse by putting pressure on the German states that had formed the Holy Roman Empire to dissolve itself. Austria and Prussia remained European powers isolated from each other, the rest of the ex-German Empire was forced into something called the Confederation of the Rhine, practically nothing but French satellite states. Among the few good things that took place in that period from 1806 to 1814 were the introduction of the modern French Civil Law Codex (Code Napoeon), the metric system and more modern administrative aspects, such as numbering houses. It is from that French era that the number "Glockengasse 4711" comes from. Eau de Cologne dates to much earlier times. There is that myth that this mix of herbal extracts dissolved in alcohol was "invented" during the Black Death periods of the Middle Ages as people mistook the stench of decaying corpses and filth in the street to be the cause of the disease and not its consequences. They were made believe that everything would be fine when you do not smell all that filth. After Napoleon's defeat the Holy Roman Empire was not restored. Instead a union of some 35 souvereign states was formed with Austria at its head. The territories along the Rhine was mostly handed over to Prussia to form a safeguard against France. The prostestant Prussians with their arrogant and stiff military and civil service soon became the target of public mockery by the easy-going and catholic Rhinelanders (Cologne Carnival Guards are a mockery of the Prussian military, the annual carnival rallies follow an agenda that ridicules meetings of public service with a strict agenda and its minutes...). When the original parchment drawings for Cologne Cathedral were discovered in serveral archives in the years after 1815 plans were made to finally finish the building. Due to lack of funds construction had stopped after some 300 years by the mid 16th century. The building crane with its huge threadwheel over the middle part of the nave and the stumps of the spires had for long been Cologne's landmark. The Prussian king backed the project. Money was raised all over the German Confederation. It was the time of growing German nationalism and many people saw it as some kind of patriotic duty to have this piece of "German" architecture completed. It was fully ignored in those days that the origin of that style was in France. The engineers stayed to the original design but altered structural elements. The roof construction is not from timbers but from rivetted steel girders that are lighter than timber frames and safe from fires. The bells are hung in steel frames as well. The job was completed in 1880. From then on the cathedral is under constant repair. Air pollution and the vibrations from the nearby railway station have worsened the normal process of erosion. Sandstone elements are replaced by copies from more durable minerals like basalt. The medieval stained-glass windows survived the bombs of WW II (they had been stored in a safe place) but the glass has become wafer thin or blind after all those years being exposed to the elements. They get cleaned, repaired and put back into place but behind a protective layer of clear glass. The glass-workshop of Cologne Cathedral saw it as their duty to jump to the side of their colleagues in Paris when Notre Dame had been ruined by that fire. Unlike their ancestors in the 19th century the modern craftsmen and -women are fully aware of the fact that Norte Dame is the "mother" of all "gothic" cathedrals and that it would be self-evident for them to be there for it in times of need.

I didn't even know that you could go up to the observation platform at the Cologne Triangle. I was just working there, in the KölnSky event location at the 28th floor. I've never seen a five guys in Cologne... apparently there are 3. Is it in any form comparable to the US, or is the food any different?

My husband didn't know, either! I was looking up things to do in Köln, and that's how I found out. I thought this Five Guys location was the same as the US!

7:07 is not the main home of 4711 - you would have to go closer to the Opera house to see that
