I love what you've been doing in your videos measurement and project-wise. Everything is easy to follow, and you've inspired a couple of my projects already. I made a copy of your tong clips yesterday (can't seem to get the curvature right to actually hold my tongs), and a hot cut hardy after watching your last video including the hardy hole tapering, and what to look out for. Keep it up, and damn the torpedos.

I've been following you for the last couple of years, and i love the vids. Living in Denmark i use metric whenever i need precision, and danish inch/feet when i need a rough guestimation. As you do it in the vids giving measurements in metric and imperial seems like the best compromise, espesially since imperial is based of metric. and never forget: don't feed the trolls...

Imperial, metric, take your pick Dan! I use both and can instantly convert between the two, of that age when I started school and imperial was taught, then it changed. Started my apprenticeship and all the old timers as well as the lines and docking plans were imperial, back to basics! Then moved on in life into the building industry and everything is metric, here we go again. No problem for me but I am probably a rarity and just the right age to have been exposed to both all my life! Thanks Dan, it’s tricky but metric is not only easier but also more precise.

I like these hardy shanks that you're working on, and the different fixing methods. for the one shown in this video, I would recommend using a spring washer between the nuts and the bottom plate of the blacksmith's helper. Another fixing method I thought of after watching your previous video, is to put a hole at the bottom of the shank, connect a length of chain to this; then have a short plank on the floor with another length of chain and a hook. Drop the chain then the shank through the hardy hole, and hook up the chain from the plank; the two length of chain, when connected, should lift the end of the plank off the floor. You put one foot on the plank, pulling the shank downwards, keeping the hardy tool pulled against the top surface of the anvil.

People just like to complain. An adjustable wrench doesn't care if a bolt is imperial or metric or anything else. Actually metric is easier all you have to do is be able to count.
@pivers014 жыл бұрын
First, a simple solution for not having a tap wrench. My dad had a great trick for taps. He simply drove a proper sized nut over the square so he could then use a socket and ratchet to run the taps. It works great! Second, keep doing things the way that you want to do them. Most of the time, you’re not giving out exact dimensions on a project anyways, just giving people an idea of size. If they feel that they need to follow exactly what you are doing, they can convert it. Third, you’re right, it’s not that people here in the States can’t get metric hardware, it’s that they don’t want to. Virtually every hardware store and auto parts store here in the US carries both SAE and metric hardware.
@warrenclay74604 жыл бұрын
I have either metric or imperial at several local supply houses. Use what you want. I won't complain unless you don't tell me what it is (okay, I can measure it). I like your second option for the holder in the hardy hole. I was going to make mine from tube steel and weld a "T" curved plate with a threaded hole in the bottom and weld a piece the size of the hardy hole with a plain hole to pass through the threaded rod at the top. There are a lot of options. I'll let you know it I like my option. Keep up the great job on the videos.

I'm perfectly fine with metric measurements. It is my personal al opinion that, as we in the states are basically the only ones who consistantly use inperial, it is our own responsibility to make the conversions if we are watching videos like yours.

Dan, I live in the States, but Metric is fine if you show the Imperial conversion somewhere on the screen. For the folks that say they can't get Metric fasteners, all they need to do is go to their local hardware store which will most likely have the most _common_ Metric fasteners, right next to the Imperial fasteners. Don't you worry that the screw/bolt that fastens the Blacksmith Helper to its hardy shank will break where it enters the shank after it has been used for a while? And, to make your taps last longer, _especially_ the smaller ones, go ahead and buy a Machinist's/Mechanic's tap handle! That is a better use of your time than making one yourself, though I really would like to see what you come up with. ;)

People are clearly and correctly saying it is your workshop, measure the way that you want. My preference is for metric spoken and imperial written on screen. The Blacksmith's Helper is a guillotine-type tool for holding differently shaped tools for the Smith, so you don't have to have 3-4 hands to do a job. The tools can be shaped flat, as fullers of different radii, as butcher tools (cutters), etc. Dan supplies the blank unpainted material stock for cutting & shaping whatever tooling you want to make for the Helper.

Of course that if you go to a specialized place (bulonera) you get metrics and imperial bolts and nuts without problem. Is like you said, if you dont get it, is because you don't want it.
