Hi Gardening Girl. I've been doing that for some years now, and the resultant double male blooms are outstanding. Here in Scotland I pinch out 2 female buds growing on each stem.

@@GardeningGirl Hi G.G. Aren't they great wee plants , , I began growing them 5 years ago I think , and they look overcrowded if left to their own devices. So, like you I pinch out the female buds before they can form fully. Seemed unfair when I first did it, but the plant didn't mind at all.They are little stormers in pots too. Don't feed pot plants too much, as they get huge n fall over in the wind, weigh them down. Having said that, I feed them weekly in summer and some of them are in direct sun and others, shade. Absolutely gorgeous. Happy New Year. ps The ones in full sun get droopy with the weight of the big double male blooms and bend their stalks. That's a bad look.

@nabakumarchakravorty9536 жыл бұрын
I believe it is not female flowers that are removed, but the male flowers to get more robust female flowers.
@GardeningGirl6 жыл бұрын
Naba Kumar Chakravorty the female flowers are smaller than the male flowers and sit slightly behind the male flower. In a tuberous begonia, the male flower is the large double flower in front. By removing the female flower, it doesn’t cause the male flower to grow larger. It causes it to bloom for a longer period of time and produce more male and female flower pairs.
@KeraLousGarden5 жыл бұрын
Naba Kumar Chakravorty Yes, you remove to male to get larger female blooms, and I believe this video makes the point that if you remove the females, the plant will produce more blooms.
@GardeningGirl5 жыл бұрын
I have been pruning my tuberous Begonias in this way for years. The male flower is the larger double bloom. The female is the single bloom flower. If I was to remove the larger fuller flower, it wouldn’t create a larger female flower. The female flower is the flower with the ovary, which would get pollinated and produce a seed head, thereby preventing the plant from producing more blooms. Once plants set seed (from female flowers) they fulfil their propagation responsibilities and stop making more blooms. If you remove the female flowers, it causes the plant to produce more flowers, in hopes to set seed.

Totally confused. Terms interchanged during explanation. Just watched a video that directed one to remove through male flower which was designated the less showy flower.
@GardeningGirl4 жыл бұрын
Carol Ramage sorry for the confusion. I filmed this video a number of years ago. The male flower is the double flower. The female flower is the single flower, that sits behind the male flower. It has what looks like a little seed cup underneath it. By removing the single flower, the plant will continue to produce more male/female pairings. Keep removing the single flower (female flower) and it will continue to produce more. I hope that helps.

Thanks so much. This is my first year growing successfully with flowers blooming. Last year I way over watered and didn’t drain properly and they all rotted. :(. This year, I hand built some flower boxes, attached to the shady side of house and I’VE GOT FLOWERS! Wahoo! I didn’t know there were male and females, so now I’ll clip those females away and see what the season has left for me. End of August now. Will store tubers for the winter and start a little earlier this next year. Thanks again for tips. ;)

I love tuberous begonias! Sounds like you're doing it right! :)
@almostafarm63945 жыл бұрын
Is that backwards? Isn't it the male flower that is insignificant? The female flower is the double that you want to keep.
@kathleenmurphy23795 жыл бұрын
She is correct the male flower is the big full flower the female flower has a little tiny flower on and then like a seed pouch behind it that's sort of triangular shape. It's the same with all begonias the female flower has to have a little flower in front of the seed pod so that a pollinator will go to the male flower get pollen and then go to the little tiny female flower that's wide open and easy to get to the pollen for the pollinator. I have a KZbin channel if you'd like to come subscribe it's Kathleen Murphy put the word house plants or philodendron or orchids in along with my name and you'll find me
@kathleenmurphy23795 жыл бұрын
It would have helped if she had shown you a female flower but I guess she decided to film after she took off the female flower

@@kathleenmurphy2379 do some of the female flowers need to be left on. (Tuber begonia, double flower)
@kathleenmurphy23794 жыл бұрын
@@MFTgal the only way you want the female flowers to stay on as if you want to try to pollinate it to get seeds but that takes away from the strength of the plant so take the female flowers off. I believe on my channel I have a video about begonias and I believe I show on Angel Wing Begonia is the difference between male flowers and female flowers. On angel wing begonias you do not have to take any of the flowers off you just leave them alone. It's on the tuberous begonias the ones with the huge flowers that the female flower should be taken off some people say. But you don't have to take it off
@franshuttlewood46494 жыл бұрын
Can you use this method with an open or "single" flower. Mine seems to have two buds behind the main single flower.
@GardeningGirl4 жыл бұрын
Fran Shuttlewood I know what you mean. Is yours a tuberous begonia as well? Sometimes there are 2 flowers behind the large double male flower. I usually wait until they open slightly to be sure I’m removing the single flower.

@@GardeningGirl Hello there, thanks so much for your reply. Yes it is tuberous. I'll wait to see what develops and then I'll know which one to snip 😉
@GardeningGirl4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes tuberous begonias develop 2 female flowers per male flower (one on each side of it). Also the base of the female flower has a kind of “cup”. This will also help to determine what each flower is.
