A fishing trawler may seem like an easy target for a powerful U.S. submarine - but these were the early days of the Pacific War, and even Japanese civilian boats were armed to the teeth.

There's another episode where machine gun fire causes enough damage to prevent a sub from submerging. Why wasn't this captain concerned over damage to the boat or his men getting hit? As soon as bullets "whizzed past the sailors and pinged off the conning tower" at 1:20, why didn't they get back inside and submerge? Then they could have withdrawn out of range of the Japanese machine gun but still in range of their deck gun and safely shell it, or use a torpedo?

@taggartlawfirm
@taggartlawfirm 5 жыл бұрын
What he said was, “if you don’t get back on that gun I’ll shoot everyone of you”. “If”. Shooting troops is rarely (never) done, but we all went through strict training on our obligation and authority to enforce lawful orders in time of war, deter and halt mutiny, and prevent cowardice in the face of the enemy. All of which are capital crimes under the UCMJ. We were also trained how to prevent those problems before they begin. (Ala Chamberlain) History shows that usually all it takes in a situation like that is a little jolt to remind good men of their duty and training. The US military, even in Vietnam has rarely had discipline problems in combat. The soldier and sailor, when all else is done, at the most basic forgets home and hearth, right or wrong, doctrine and principal, and fights for the man next to him, for the ship, the unit, and because he is a man trained to do a job that must be done. With all that said, and not really pertinent to this situation, running is contagious, if one man runs more will, and once unit cohesion is gone you’re no longer a military force but a mob. Though I’ll tell you, before I would have ever had need to shoot a fleeing man, the nearest sergeant would have already knocked him on his ass, and thrown him back into position, ... or drilled him. NCO’s have much the same authority in tight situations and your squad or plt. sergeant is much more likely to know if the troop just had a momentary freak out, or was a coward. NCO and PO’s are the backbone of the military. If the sgt squared the man away, and told me he had squared it away, it would be one of the many things that a leader “didn’t see,” and would not be mentioned again. Regardless, it is what it is. A decision to use summary deadly force will be reviewed by a board of review and then a summary court, make the wrong call and you’re in deep sh*t, that’s why Officers get the big bucks.

@@devonlord99 Naval guns have a funky naming scheme to them, 50 caliber just means the barrel is 50 times as long as its diameter, so a 3" 50 caliber barrel is 150" long

"Underestimated"? You mean instead of blowing them out of the water. The Captain instead showed more honor by surfacing and notify them to evacuate their ship. Giving them the choice to live. That is called chivalry of war. The fisherman chose to fight and sacrifice themselves instead of surrender. I can respect them for that.

The Silversides is on display as a museum ship in Muskegon, MI. Seen it a couple times. Cool to look at. Didn't know their first mission went this way. They needed more training for the gun crew!!!

Researched it: USS Silversides (SS-236) on it's maiden tour 4 April 1942 under command of then Lt Cmdr Creed Burlingame. He rose to Rear Admiral and Legion of Merit and crew received Presidential Citation for actions. The sub is now a museum ship in Muskegon, Michigan. There is still confusion on what exactly happened.
