To be honest, navigating today on Internet without and Adblock is probably the worst experience ever. It's now mandatory, and the fact that Google has been at war for so long with Adblockers is one more proof of how important to users Adblocks are. Lots of huge mobile games are also completely unplayeable without one. Ads should have stayed something you "stumble" upon on your way, and not something that you're forced to watch to actually go on your way.

Hi, wiki editor (LoR/Path) here, the old wiki had maaaany issues, the ads where just the most obvius ones, if someone wants to quickly replace old wiki (that will not be updating, at least, no one on the Lor side plans to, nor on the League side, and we stoped updating in the middle of a patch so there is a mess there) i recommend indie wiki buddie Yes riot is not a small indie company (nor does... great things... like what they did a few days ago) but the extension works for league wiki too Edit: also yes, the editors from weird gloop did an amazing job, really apreciative of them, both generically and personally (they allowed me to merge accounts and do a lot of stuff that apparently is... not easy for them to do)

That "Blizzard uses their fan wiki to check lore" story reminds me of the Ben 10 franchise. There were multiple instances of fans editing the wiki pages to add in random info without a source, and as the shows' writers left and new ones joined, they would check the wiki for lore. For example, one user edited a character's page to include a middle name that was never mentioned anywhere (in or outside the shows), and years later, that exact middle name was used in an episode making it canon. There are a lot of similar examples. I'm pretty sure the wiki itself now has a page listing all the user edits that have become canon one way or another.

Something similar happened with Destiny, where a character attributed the title "The shipstealer" to a character, name misspelt, not even remotely close to what's said. And the team at Bungie checked the wiki, now Eramis, The Shipstealer, is a major character when she was created out of someone's mistake.

Apparently the "Wiki" part comes from wikiwiki with is Hawaiian word meaning quick. software developer Ward Cunningham in 1995 made WikiWikiWeb, the idea was to create rapid evolving and collaborative editing so the other wikis can use the Wiki part because its in the spirit of the original concept.

Praise riot but do not forget to praise the wiki team! Their company, Weird Gloop responsible for the minecraft & oldschool runescape wiki which is one of the best video game wiki's around. i was so hyped when i heard Weird Gloop was involved with the LoL wiki as they're also paid by Jagex (dev behind runescape) to maintain their wiki. wouldn't leave this task in anyone else's hands!

Just a little education here, the reason most wiki sites look alike is because they are in fact build on top or is just a straight instance of an open source software called MediaWiki, the exact same engine that wikipedia uses which is why the look is almost identical because it is the same with slight alterations to the theme and some customisation in some cases due to yet again the base being a free open source software. So they are in fact in a lot of these instance the same, just hosted by different people. For a little fun exercise here if you as a private individual wanted to have your own copy of wikipedia all you need is to set up an instance of media wiki and get the wikipedia database export, which last time I checked is readily available but be warned it is rather large and when tou include media the size sky rockets. Or for that matter if you ever wanted to create your own wiki you can do this and set it up from scratch and add your own content or if you did not have the know how probably use a service which is probably why most of these are riddled with ads because hosting ain't free and someone is paying for that so ads is one way to keep it free for consumers while covering your base costs / make some revenue.

It easily could. It's just a web browser with restrictions. Now that they're hosting the wiki themselves there's no reason to not pull their data from there. The only thing that can go wrong is memory leaks, which is actually not that unlikely to be fair.

"Became popular in these communities" sure is a funny way to say "Fandom bought out all the Wiki hosts people *actually* use to force them all to be Fandom wikis so they can charge more for Ads on the Fandom Domain." (I still remember when Fandom bought out a Wiki host that hosted a lot of NSFW game wikis... Then *purged* them all for breaking the guidelines they never agreed to or were notified of the change in. And we're talking like 60-70% of the host's Wikis, they just want a monopoly.) I have known exactly one community that willingly used Fandom and that was run by a scammer who tried to sue an artist out of his intellectual property that he graviously gave permission for the guy to use because that permission was conditional. So, ya know. Between that and how Fandom is as a company... Its easy to see where they got their horrid reputation.

As soon as I saw this I immediately went to check, and yeah it has pretty much all the exact same info, and I'm not gonna lie, it looks waaaaaaaaaaay better than the old wiki. It's not a massive change overall to visuals, just easier to use and look through on the main pages.

The wiki should be fairly similar with just a few improvements. The main positives of the migration is that the entire wiki is now made official by Riot, and is completely funded by them while also retaining the original creators of the wiki to edit it as they like. Fandom became a cancer and Riot helped the wiki creators to migrate extremely efficiently. But like you said, there will definitely be some nice visual improvement too.

Weird tho that it was gonna happen weather Riot helped or not and they just kinda fronted the bill for the community so I guess it's a win-win.
