The Pratt & Whitney R2800 engine was "America's War Engine". It powered: F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, P-47 Thunderbolt, B-26 Marauder, A-26 Invader, F7F Tigercat, and F8F Bearcat. 1st engine to produce "one horsepower per pound".

My former husband was one of the most informed and knowledgeable people I've ever known concerning aircraft, foreign or USA craft. And he was amazing with his knowledge. I remember him mentioning this plane but I don't specifically remember what all he said. He would also watch these types of videos and loved them. Its a shame he passed away a few years ago. I've never been able to remember that much information about these aircraft. I like watching the videos you post. Interesting and very cool information is in them. Thanks for sharing!

Just a note- aircraft designations at that time were a bit different than currently used, P-61 -P- is the designation for Pursuit aircraft - aka 'fighter/bombers as the 'B' in B-17, B-24, B25, B-26, B-29, B-36, B-52, B-1, B-1-B, B-2, etc. designates 'Bomber' F-6-F as in Hellcat 'F' designates Fighter, as in F-14 and (other fighter aircfraft forward & backward in time.) hope this helps someone.

Hi Recky, the reason you haven't heard of these is probably because they entered service very late in the war, shooting down the first German plane 2 months after D-Day. This docu makes it sound like the British were using outdated single engined night-fighters, when in fact we'd already adapted two multi-role planes as night-fighters. The De Havilland Mosquito and the Bristol Beaufighter. Both of them twin engined, and equipped with airborne radar, using the British invention, the cavity magnetron, ( also used in sonar sets). The magnetron was gifted to the U.S. in 1940 along with Britains more advanced research on the A-bomb. Both these planes were heavily armed, the Mosquito night-fighter had 4 cannon and 4 machine guns in the nose, and the Beaufighter had 4 cannon in the nose and 6 machine guns in the wings. Before the P61 became available the U.S. was using significant numbers of Mosquito and Beaufighter night-fighters.

The US's top ace in WW 2, Swedish-American Richard Bong flew a twin engine P-38 in the Pacific and scored 40 kills in it. The P-38 looks a lot like the plane in this video

The Mid Atlantic Air Museum in Pennsylvania is restoring one of the Black Widows to flying condition. The only others (3 of them) are in museums...

I actually learned something dude. I hadn't heard of the P-61 before. Pretty cool plane for the time period. Even though I did hear about that demonstration but didn't realize it was the P-61 they were showing off.

They still fly thru thunderstorms and hurricanes. Neat videos of lightning striking one wingtip and exiting the other. They learned that "carbon fiber" SUCKS in lightning. Aluminum channels it away, carbon fiber blows apart.

Another plane, like the P-61, was the P-38 Lightning. It was the same 2 pod design but was both a great fighter and bomber escort. It was used in the shooting down of Admiral Yamamoto's plane.

The use of airborne Radar was very effective in night sub hunting. Many nazi and Japanese subs were sunk at night while they were running on the surface to recharge their dive batteries. Planes would drop out of night sky and depth bomb them surfaced or not.

Of the 706 produced, there are only 4 Black Widows left in the world: P-61B 42-39715: captured during the Korean War, on static display at the Beijing Air and Space Museum in Beijing, China. P-61C 43-8330: on static display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia. P-61C 43-8353: on static display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. And last but certainly not least, P-61B 42-39445: currently under restoration to complete flying status by the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, Pennsylvania. In a few more years, we’ll see a Black Widow slip the surely bonds of Earth once more…

The P 61 was probably built at the Northrup plant in Hawthorne. My dad built a model of it so that is how I found out about it. Northrup also brought us the B 2 and the B 21.

The P38 Lightning is very similar in looks, abd it was a daytime fighter. The British Mosquito was a twin engine wooden frame plane that was as fast if not faster than the Black Widow and was armed to the teeth abd flew night missions as well. The black widow had a great radar system that set it apart from the others. Fat electrician has a great video on the mosquito.

The Lockheed Lightning P38 Fighter had a similar design with the twin engine bodies and a central control pod and the F82 twin Mustang merged two P51 Mustangs for a similar effect without the central pod. The double engine fighter gave them an edge in horsepower even managing handling fights with the early jets.

The caveat being the the F82's were used as a stop gap measure as an escort, ground attack and weather recon. I dont think there's actually any evidence of a F82 dog fighting a Russian jet, since its service life was only 2 years in the beginning of the Korean War, but i could be wrong on the dogfighting part.

You made a few comments about the design. That wasn't entirely new, the P-38 had a similar design: twin engine, twin boom, single fuselage. But the P-38 was a one-man fighter. Yes, a twin-engine design is heavier- but the large tail provides more control surface which more than compensates by allowing tighter turns.

I've heard that generally, dual engines get you 50% more speed for twice the fuel cost....and the obvious safety benefit of having a spare engine to get home in the event that one fails.

Reminds me of the P-38… though I remember reading that the P-38M night fighter was developed to replace the P-61 due to the latter’s perceived slowness. Beautiful machine, though.
