That's kind of the beauty of the HFY genre. You look around for a moment and you see a beautiful, life-giving cradle for our species to thrive in. Then you look a little bit closer and realize that there's a reason our bodies have an immune system strong enough to kill us, have the ability to stabilize and heal from almost anything that isn't instantly fatal, still have a fight-or-flight response baked into our subconscious, and have an "off" switch for our empathy that immediately removes our cares for any creature we don't recognize as a person. For how habitable Earth can be, it's kind of a rough place to live.

The teacher used the alien and imperial measurement the first time, then used the imperial measurements only after that. Probably to force her students to get used to “how the Earthlings do things”.
