Somewhere between Susan, Pipi, and Ainol, this channel is creating some great potential lore/fan fiction. My ex-wife used to sell these tablets online. Initially they looked nice, but they were poorly made and broke easily. No need for them now since you can have a great multimedia tablet, like the Samsung I'm typing this on, for 150 euros.

These old tablets can work as an OBS / stream control deck, I have a similar spec Acer (Android 4.2) and it does the job nicely for the £4 I paid for it on ebay, which is just a bit cheaper than the +£200 Elgato version. Great channel old chap, very entertaining.

I still love the Android 4/4.1 Interface. It was great for tablets. Also the settings menu is so much more structured than on newer versions. Especially starting with android 11 the menu just got horrible. A12 even more. I love those older versions, back then android was also much more open source friendly then now where many APIs are part of play services

I miss being able to find what I'm looking for in the settings. Now on Android 12 I always have to try to use the search and figure out how the settings are worded and then how they translated it to my language, it's a frustrating experience every time

2:06 since it is an Allwinner, can it run Linux(Ubuntu, Retrorangepi, etc) like a single board computer does, by inserting an SD card in it? I would suggest testing Linux by flashing it into an SD card for the next video.

Around 29:20 you mention installing something else on it. Would a later Android version run on this, or Linux? .. For the latter I'd suggest a point-release e.g. Mint but with Xfce desktop instead of Cinnamon (the latter is generally heavier on HW). I actually wouldn't mind one of these if it can run Linux. Tried that with a Microsoft Linx 7 but with limited success.

I ordered an 10 inch Ainol Hero from China and it was great. US tablets didn't have SD card slots and it was a fortune to get one with a lot of storage back then. I used it for reading comics off the SD card for 10 years until the battery stopped charging.

with that huge battery you can actually say: let me charge my pipi in my ainol! anyway agreed with you, good screen and camera (at least not that bad like a welcome) but too "laggy". as for the android version, the best old one is marshmallow. even lollipop is almost out of running apps, i know 'cause i have a zenfone 2 and i can barely find any working sh!t. i use apkmirror to find old versions but even tho you can install them, probably won't work.

The 2048x1536 display was repurposed from an iPad 3. It uses exactly the same ribbon cable and connector. Not all that surprised considering that the Chinese aren't particularly known for their originality. Secondly, there is actually 2GB of RAM installed on the board since there are 8x H5TQ2G83CFR 256MB chips.

You could try running a PS1 emulator. Run it stock, then in OpenGL mode. Pretty good indicator of what older devices can do

Well, the tablet is not bad at its time of release. It's not high end, sure, but the specs is on par to low-mid range of the time. Screen, like you said, is quite remarkable. It's an Apple wannabe, but fell short, though.

I remember when these tablets came out. This and other tablets like it (like the Onda V972) attempted to take the Allwinner A31 - a budget-level SoC even for its day - and put it into a more "premium" package with features like >1 GB of RAM, a metal body, and a Retina Display. The problem was that even the relatively powerful (compared to the Mali 400 in other budget SoCs) SGX544 simply wasn't up to the task of driving a Retina Display with good performance and power consumption, leading to some feeling disappointed in these tablets' laggy performance and lack of good battery life. It didn't help that many of these tablets were also plagued with unoptimized firmware, too. Still, I loved these devices. They were cheap, and for light computing, movies, or eReading/audiobooks they were great. (My daily driver for a while was a Korean branded Chinese tablet with similar specs, with a 1280 x 800 8" display.) It's just a shame that many of these never got official upgrades - they would have really benefitted from Android 4.4's optimizations for lower-end hardware.

This tablet spark a joy in people... analy... As for what we could do with such old tablets... I know few thigs but none of it are good for review, as I use one old tablet as security camera preview device that work constantly for past 2 years(No kidding, screen is ON 24/7) and I stuck it to wall on kitchen with double side tape. But for review its hard to think anything that would be useful and entertaining... if you would be hardcore DIY guy you could rip internals and make miniature emulator-game station that look like old arcade machine or hilariously big gameboy... But thats probably also not good for review :P So I have no idea... maybe small section about modding it? just checking if it have any custom roms?

Ok yeah, tablet is quiet. But the devices you normally test are so loud, and held so close the microphone, that this is the first time im actually able to hear how the song is supposed to go. Usually its just so loud that it seems distorted even though its not. Maybe theres a word for what im trying to describe.

You can use mx player or vlc player for fair testing. I don't think any generic brand video players were able to play anything above 1080p. And also the screen used in this ainol tablet might be a real ipad screen with sharp or lg branding. Hence the good looking screen. You can actuaaly salvage the screen and buy an lcd controller from aliexpress and make this a portable retina monitor.
