I just realized, my teacher doesn't encourage or doesn't mention counterfeits and clones because she herself was letting us borrow counterfeits that she bought for quite the price. and is holding us accountable if it breaks. I mean sure it's right, but now that I got a clone, I probably would never touch that pricey counterfeit again if clones would just do fine.

I started off with genuine Arduino Uno and Mega boards, but nowadays I always buy clones, and haven't had any trouble with them over 4 or 5 years. So many people don't realise that the Arduino is an open-source platform, and therefore there is nothing wrong with making a clone, or building a more fully featured board on the base design. Completely agree with your view on counterfeit though; that's just abusing the open -source nature of the Arduino project, and in my view it's attempting to mislead customers too.

Not long ago, I purchased 8 "Arduino" starter kits from AliExpress and began exploring the world of microcontrollers. The kits came with clones. I was a bit put off at first, but in using these I quickly realized these do everything other people are doing with their original UNO boards. So, I concur that the clones are just as good, and as an added bonus are cheaper than the original boards. The only difficulty I had with a clone was due to lack of sleep, and I absentmindedly connected a 9V rated 1A adapter to the board. Needless to say, that after a brief puff of smoke my board no longer functioned properly.

Hi thanks for this video. this is a good guide. I think it was fair and balanced. The only thing I would mention is that , since arduino is open source, we expect also the others to open source their files. Unfortunatley most of the clones and "value added" boards are clearly in violation of the CC-SA-BY license on our hardware... It's a simple rule, if you use something that Arduino releases you should release your changes too. Otherwise the incentive to release as open source becomes less than zero while cloners flourish because they don't bear any of the costs of running the Arduino machine.

This is good commentary. I have only bought two Arduino unos, one Arduino sensor kit, one Arduino motor shield, and one Adafruit motor shield. I am new to Arduino completely, so to start I only want to use brand name HW partly to make sure I have stuff that works, and partly to support Arduino. As I move forward in mechatronics and get more experience I expect I will start to use some generic equipment. I was happy to support Arduino by buying real kit, they have made a real great system.

Oh, I forgot to say as I got carried away :) I don't remember any issues with the original boards. For clones, I have had many come with no boot loader and a few with DOA issues, but that has been the rare side of things. I used to test a new arrival by uploading the blink code, but if the BL was not there I would just use the avr-toolchain and send a blink I did with avrdude. I did just get a batch of nano clones in for a project that the client requires using the *duino world. None of the clones had the bootloader and I had to put it on them. Not a big deal, but I could see that as an issue for others.

The issue is always a tradeoff between costs and the value you give to your time. Buying something that works out of the box and comes with warranty it's an important value for some, it saves you time and risk.

I feel the Arduino.cc boards are a good value in most cases and I have purchased and will purchase again the genuine boards when they are the best value (price, quality, functionality, etc.) I still think the 8-bit boards could be a few dollars less. Could the normal Nano be made to sell for @10$USD? I know the UNO R3 takes a bit more make but how about a TQFP-32 version of the UNO? I know I am on the outside looking in, and not having the complete picture on those items. You guys do a super job with the foundation and I think it's been a BIG positive in the OSH world and a driving force. Thanks for all you do and have done.

@@UReasonIt Thanks for the comment. We do have the Nano Every which is more powerful than the regular nano and sells for $9. Two of the issues with pricing of Arduino boards is that , on one hand doing everything by the book is expensive and on the other hand the price includes the margin for the resellers who do an important job. Not everyone can buy direct and resellers provide a service which is important for most customers. Obviously if one could cut corners, use lower quality parts, completely remove any investment in development/support/etc and sell directly (with ridiculously low shipping charges that are subsidised by the government) you can see how much cheaper things could be. But hey I somebody makes copies of Arduino respecting the trademark and the open source licenses, we're ok with it.. We do it because we believe in the power of open source. :)

My first Arduino board was a genuine Mega2560 and it has served me well. I have also bought and used several of the clones with the CH340 chip. I even have one of the Robored's from Yourduino. The ONLY one of ANY of them that has ever failed was the Robored--- but that failure was my OWN fault for allowing 12 volts onto an analog pin. Even then, the rest of the board works normally. I like the Ch340 boards better, by the way. ----Not hundreds, like you, but a couple dozen, at least. Except for few experiments, most are in process control environments.

I have the Elegoo Uno. It worked until I let it sit unused for a couple months. It would not communicate with my PC. It would eventually see it after changing com ports several times, but it wouldn't take any changes. Reseating the chip fixed the issue.

Should send you one of my home-made Uno work-a-likes. I put a jumper on the 6-pin ISP, so user can select it to be RST or the SPI/SS pin. Good for when you want to use the device as an SPI host. That 3/5V switch on yours is a good idea. An inside row of pins on the right, without that awful 0.4mm offset is a must for people who construct shields out of common 50x70mm protoboards.

When I started with the Arduino EFI(Speeduino) 4 years ago, people noticed the USB dropping-out with the CH340 chip. It's probably fixed now, but it was the auto load PnP win driver. If you ran the official CH340 manufacturer driver it was fine. I also blewup my Mega2560 when I plugged it into a laptop that was being powered by the cigarette lighter. ie, the car injectors tried to ground through the laptop - lol -.

I’ve got a couple real UNO’s and I’ve gotten several clones/fakes with parts kits I’ve purchased. One of the “free” ones I’ve got I’m seriously hesitant to use as components on the board arn’t even soldered on straight. It was manufactured by a company called Wayin Top. To me that speaks to their quality and their workmanship and leads me to call that board suspect at best.

Good! I bought black moisture sensor from elegoo, small water pump from elegoo. Pack of wires, an 8 switch (blue) brick I call it. Lol I will order mega Arduino (elegoo). I will look for old usb wire to power 8 switch /sensors/pumps that will be attached. What level of power usb plug do I need (amps)? At first 1sensor/pump. Once works I will add as many as possible. Is it qty ONE ITEM PER SWITCH? Or. Sensor and pump both per switch?

I will end up with 8sensors / 8 pumps. Running. Later I will set up another set of 8 with same MEGA Arduino but a new 8 switch brick (or whatever is needed. Lol. Eventually I will max out the MEGA ARDUINO. start with another mega but larger pumps. I am trying to auto sense and water vegetables in containers (Asian veges), fruit trees, berries, grape vines, then a raised garden. Oh, the wife’s rose bushes.lol much later but in phases. I know it's 3 years later lol but I personally have only had one genuine arduino and that was the mega 2560, from there I have almost exclusively used the keystudio mega 2560 plus and the keysudio uno plus I would wholeheartedly recommend those 2, I tried using the keystudio uno dev board but it seemed to have some extremely odd issues where it disconnected and or just completely shut off when trying to communicate over the usb bua so I wouldn't recommend that one.

My luck with the official boards is much like yours. I own about 160 arduinos. All clones except for one.Mostly Nano,Uno, and Mega. A dozen or so Micro and Attiny. The one genuine Arduino I purchased is the only one that turned out to be a brick. After 3 years all my arduinos from AliExpress are still going strong in various musical projects. Every few months I will try that one bad one and still cannot get it to work.

I use clone unos, never had a problem with any of them. However, I also got a clone pro micro, and the usb interface doesn't really work, I have to reset it every time I upload to it, and the hid feature doesn't work (I can't use it as a keyboard)

I'm not sure if I have a genuine Arduino board unless someone had sent one in, but I've had clones of Uno, Due, Nano, Pro Micro (Isn't that a Sparkfun creation? But mine was still a clone of it). No problems. I did buy a genuine Sparkfun uno for over $20 in 2016 or 2017, my first Arduino related product. Back then I didn't know there were $3 clones, I thought $20 WAS the clone!

I normally use nano clones which have the ch340g driver. Since its more convenient to use on a breadboard. After everything's working, I move onto using pro mini's to make my project smaller. Did anyone try the dual nrf24 adapter with i2c and spi pins?

I do a lot of stuff that uses networking libraries that can easily overrun the ram of nano/uno, but when I can drop down to those. I've started using Wemos D1 mini's for my compact stuff when I need more power. I've never tried the nrf24. Interested to hear if anyone responds on that.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? It all depends on what you want to make. Nothing comes by far close to the value rate of a Nano clone if you want to make a simple project like an mp3 jukebox, or controlling some lamps, or making a thermostat, or... You don't need a $100+ superdupergadget when you still can use the one for less than $2.00 - and it's even much easier to work with.

Most SBC's like the RPI aren't real-time and some-what harder to interface with the real world, but lines are getting more and more and more blurred there. Things like outside world interrupt processing and the like are still better suited for a uC. For many Python is the choice they should make and for others, C, ASM, or Forth is what they need to get the job done, even for fun projects. It's all in what you need.

It's definitely a viable choice. It's so much simpler than the pi and if I don't need a full-fledged operating system, I reach for the arduino or ESP boards 99 times out of 100.

Last year, just before the human malware situation arose, I made a 'CD drive emulator' for my old car radio, using an Atmega 328p. It made the radio think a CD multichanger was attached, so the radio then enabled its line inputs, which allowed an mp3 player to work, instead of using a terrible cassette adaptor. It also allowed the buttons on the radio to change tracks on the MP3 player. Built onto a small piece of vero board, it works a treat, so yes, I'd wholeheartedly say that skills learned via 'Arduino', and the 'Uno', using basic microcontrollers (not so much the surface mount ones), still have a place, as long the supply of them lasts, and the current issue of counterfeit chips can be resolved.

Good topic. I use clones and off-shoots mostly for *duino-type boards. I have the following real boards: Due, MKR1000, Yun (x2), Curi, and a Nano33 IoT. I have thought for a long time that the 8bit AVR boards were too pricy for what they are. I know the older Nano has dropped in price but still should be a few dollars less than it is. I would buy a Nano33 again and think they are a decent value. The big draw for newbies to the Arduino uC world is the IDE and libraries available and not so much the hardware the foundation has. I do recommend it to others as a "gateway" (drug;-) but recommend other options for real prod-type development. I keep the IDE on my computer for quick tests and the serial monitor :) I have donated several times to the foundation and believe in what it's doing. The *duino libraries are plentiful I know and that's a good thing, but I think most are too bloated for my use anyway. The latter is MY OPINION and my problem and not others I'm sure. I am a path less traveled kind of person, good or bad.

I just got in to these a couple momths back (single board computers and electronic interests lead me this way). I am buying an Arduino Uno R3 from arduino .cc to contribute to them in some way, but other fhan that I'll probably be grabbing clones and ones with improvements if possible. For instance, someone is selling an uno style board with improved components on ebay (like non electrolytic capacitors on there instead), and stuff like the Seeeduino boards and some of the keyestone boards (like their supers or advanced boards) interest me Honestly, I'd be more inclined to buy a couple more actual Arduino's if they didn't do weird stuff like not bringing the 4th pin (ain0) on the Mega's processor out to socket so some tbird party shields for the Uno won't work with the Mega.

Yeah. I guess in a lot of ways it's easier to just donate directly to arduino if you want rather than overpay for boards you may not like.

take care about exist more than one original revisions (no mean R3 or R2 or something, i mean color, connectors and silkprints) througth the years. i count at least 4 different models. one with the front in "dark" green (or green mixed with dark blue) color and back in white with enormus infinite in dark green (my unit), other with the front in dark green and the back with dark green with the infinite in white, others with the front in blue with the back in vertically part in half white and blue, other the same but change the blue with the dark green, and finaly like you show in the video in the first place... . same happend with the rest of the boards, include nano, micro, mega and due. only can know what is an original model is if use the original website with waybackmachine and surf throught different years. greetings

the fake actually uses the old arduino uno r3 silkscreen on the back and the new genuine ones use a different silkscreen on both layers and still says rev 3 due to hardware being rev 3 while look of the silkscreening has been changed which is kinda dumb in my opinion should have called it rev 4 as any change to the boards electrical or visual should change the rev number which they didn't do for some stupid reason.

I agree with most of what you say. I have had no problems with the Chinese clones, apart from when that chip manufacturer decided to brick all copies of their communication chips through a malicious sabotage update in Windows Update. But I don't blame the Chinese for that behaviour. Apart from my major project of bringing back life into a dead pinball machine - that took two Mega's - I am more than pleased with the Nano clones I ordered for about US$1.80 some years ago before our country took Protectionistic measures to cease such purchases. So to me, that development of new, more expensive boards is totally not interesting. It just makes it even harder to pick the correct board from the ever growing list of boards when connecting one to my PC. I would however like to see someone develop the UI to recognize the hardware automatically. I don't have the knowledge needed to understand how difficult this must be to achieve, but I can't help but wonder how hard that could be! It's really really a pain in the butt to pick the correct variant of boards as they grow in numbers, especially as I am not very interested in learning about that part of the Arduino Universe. I'm just a maker, focusing on what I can make from what I already have at hand, not studying the all step in the evolution of Arduino variants.

@@rahncoe I've actually had occasion recently to use an old cheap usb to rs232 dongle I had knocking about, and it's a fake FTDI chip that ordinarily I'd use an older driver version as you say, but because I couldn't be bothered to fight the thing (I know from previous experience that it's a nasty little thing that fights back), I just used a newer version than the nasty ones, and it just worked, I was actually shocked. The massive global reprisals that FTDI got because of the debacle, forced them to release newer drivers that work fine; instead of bricking the device, they just plaster hilarious warnings about 'counterfeit blah, blah, consult your dealer ...' all over the things info in device manager.

I bought 2 bad clones off Ebay. Both my genuine arduinos work fine. Buy the real one.. Its a risk buying clones. The fake usually don't have the firmware in them and thats tricky to fix.
