In this special film, Dr Mark Evans visits the V&A and Windsor Castle to reveal how Raphael made the cartoons which were used to make tapestries by specialist weavers in Brussels and how they come to be at the V&A. Meanwhile, in Rome, Vatican Museum Curator, Professor Arnold Nesselrath explains how Raphael applied his 'universal genius' to sculpture, architecture and tapestry as well as painting.
At the film's climax, the two curators meet in the Sistine Chapel to witness a hanging of the Raphael tapestries in 'the greatest room in art'. This rare event took place in July as the prelude to this autumn's historic V&A exhibition.

Thank you for this incredible documentary though I notice it was made 12 years ago I somehow missed the tapestries before and love Raphael. I hope these documentaries continue they are so valuable to those of us who went to art school long ago.

i wanted to watch and listen but I could barely hear it at all. Terrible. The title has a playful if a bit gossipy tone, not sure what that's about, I was curious. Too bad. Glad you could get past the score. I'm off to find more Raphael presentations.

11:45 It wasn't a historian who said that "the past is a foreign country"; it's from the first line of LP Hartley's "The Go-Between": "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there."

I believe Raphael had died before ever seeing his tapestries completed and hung in the chapel. I gather he literally worked himself to death, having to do too much all at once, along with juggling his social life.

The distressing and inane stupidity of the background music is a real pity.

No, you are a pity, you obviously have no taste in music, art, beauty, if you think rock, or music about sex, electronic is better, than you truly are tragic.

@@appleskum6520 oh be quiet🙄the music is distracting and horrendous. The symphony at the end was just ear scratching.

Very badly presented. The music a huge distraction and the man with the glasses is boring.

The sound on this amazing video was terrible. Some here bash the music, that wasn't nearly as bad as the guy with the glasses and his weak, timid, feminine voice that could barely be heard.
