Anne Frank and her family moved to Amsterdam following the uprising of the Nazi Party in 1933. Five Years later, in 1938, Eva Schloss remembers the Nazis marching on Austria and then her family fleeing and settling in Amsterdam the same year. They found they were in the same residential square as Anne and her family. Anne and Eva formed a bond from the shared experience of being displaced by the Nazis. This was the beginning of an extraordinary story where Eva would become inextricably linked to Anne Frank and her legacy over the next 70 years. Anne’s father Otto, and Eva’s mother Elfriede survived. They both lost their partners and other children. The Diary was discovered shortly after the war and published in 1947. Elfriede and Otto became closer, offering each other emotional support. In 1953 Otto and Elfriede married. Eva would be one of the first people to hear Otto read extracts from the Diary, a feat which he couldn’t manage to do without breaking down into tears. In 1989 Eva set up the Anne Frank Trust UK which aimed to share the message of the Anne Frank Foundation to challenge prejudice and hatred. New research has suggested that she and Margot actually died some time before the liberation, as early as Febraury 1945. Survivors of the camp who knew the Frank sisters all agree that they had symptoms of typhus in Febraury, and untreated they would never have survived until the end of March when they were orginally thought to have died :(

It’s not clear just when Anne died. The sources differ and there’s some dispute. But if it was just a short time before the Allies came, it was another heartbreaking “almost there” for her. They almost missed the last train from Westerbork to Auschwitz, and would have if they’d managed another month in the Annexe. They would have ended up in a concentration camp, but at least it wouldn’t have been Auschwitz. Anne’s mother died only short weeks before Auschwitz was liberated. Another “almost”.

Anne Frank to me is an ordinary, beautifully ordinary, young girl. She's no more or no less than any other young girl that was murdered in the Holocaust. Her, her diary, her thoughts and feelings are a recorded embodiment that represents so many millions that were effected by the Holocaust. Her story is so heartbreaking. I hope she is watching from above and knows she is loved by many many more millions than the ones that had hatred from her.

There have been people who have tried to recreate it, using a lot of poetic license, as a means of giving her an outlet for her story too. Anne’s diary helped to build a timeline of events throughout their stay, and Margot’s feelings were often made clear throughout Anne’s retelling of things. Additionally, Otto would talk about the comings and goings of both girls during the occupation. So a lot of writers have tried to piece her experiences together so as to allow her her own movies and books too. Which I think is so critical. I’ve heard so many accounts from friends “you think Anne was smart? You think Anne could write? I wish you’d seen Margot’s diary and talked to her.” Many people who grew up with the girls called Margot the most interesting and introspective sister. So it’s a shame that we missed out on what would have been also her incredibly invaluable perspective. Clearly the Franks had raised two highly intelligent, thoughtful, capable young women. It’s a shame we only got to hear the full story from one.

Otto Frank surviving was a stroke of extreme luck. Him deciding to hide from the KZ guards who were organizing a death march upon news of Allied advances saved him. Peter Van Pels - who was with him in the same camp - unfortunately died in the march, deciding he can survive the war by joining. Otto's survival is also seen as a cruel joke if one thinks about it. When Jewish persecution in Germany began in earnest, all of the Franks move out, most opting to go to the US where they all survive the war. Otto's decision to choose to flee with his family to the Netherlands instead haunted him until his dying day. I also can't help but imagine what Anne Frank was thinking during those final months. The Anne Frank we knew from the diary was optimistic and hopeful of humanity, I wonder how much of that is brutally challenged and shattered as she comes face to face with its worst excesses from forced separation between families to physical abuse to helplessness to hopelessness to mass murder...

I read the diary in an English class, in high school, and I watched a movie about the Franks and their roommates while in hiding and I still get very sad about her. The movie seemed to suggest the manager of the store was the one who betrayed them but that might be just a script add-on. Her dad had the right idea, publishing her diary…she is the face of the Holocaust because she had time to write her thoughts and experiences in hiding. She liked her mom, eventually, but her dad didn’t treat her as he should’ve…she said when she marries her husband will treat her with respect.

I finished reading her diary about a week ago. Only took me two weeks to get through because of how talented a writer she was, she had me so immersed in her life and inner world in hiding I was looking forward to each entry with anticipation. I felt I shared in all her passions, dreams, misfortunes and self questionings as she recounted her days in hiding and I literally praised out loud when she experienced her first kiss with Peter. I remember the feeling of deep sadness when I turned the page to where it stated "This is where Anne's diary ends" and then reading about the fates of those hiding in the secret annex. I needed to know more and so researched and learned more about Anne and her families life while imprisoned in camp. This book impacted me in a way that no other has before. Never have I cried so often after reading a story. To be so immersed in this girl's life to where you know her innermost thoughts about love, hope and longing and then to have it all torn away at the turn of a page. I still find myself tearing up a week later. To me Anne symbolizes the image of innocence, goodness and purity that we all come into this world knowing. Over time the world's harshness can taint that. Hardships and injustice can turn the most sweetest souls bitter. I felt a return to that purity while reading her diary and I'm grateful for that. Anne's spirit I feel will forever live on by any of those touched by her story. Rest in Paradise sweet girl.

It is up to each one of us to make certain that the people who have no knowledge of any of this become educated about it! It would be far too easy for something like the holocaust to happen again to any group of people! PLEASE never forget!!!!

It happens all the time even to this day. How much did the media educate people on the recent atrocities in Burma these last 10-12 years? A bunch poor Asians. Nobody cares about them.

It's interesting how it took off and became more popular in Japan than in many European counties, in England it was out of print less than 12 months after is was released, it was sometime before it was reprinted in Britain as there wasn't much demand for it

This is called a tale of two sisters and its about Anne and Eva schloss when Anne literally had a full sister
@AntelJM9 ай бұрын
Eva was Anne’s stepsister, and although Anne never knew of that development, they had been friends until the age of 13 when they both went into hiding. Crucially Eva survived to talk about Anne and Otto and the holocaust, and Margot (Anne’s ‘full sister’) did not, leaving none of her own words at all. Eva was a great addition to this documentary. The film just needed a snappy title, that’s the way things go.

I must say? The world in which we live now in being 2024' has came so far. That of a good way, thank goodness. It's very disturbing, seeing knowing that of some of history was so different in ways of such. I suppose it would be in a sense persau'? Like that of churches, different beliefs and the way the thought as so undeniable different. The way, one believes this way. As another, in a total different manner. The way, the talk in each or the way the react. I am so thankful, for that in the progress of our world today. 21:14 21:14
