Tusq XL is great on a Strat with vibrato setup. NO binding at the nut. Hosco makes bone nut with paraffin as a lubricant.

One of my most requested repairs! I prefer either; Bone, antler or mastadon ivory for nuts. I always have to open nut slots and reshape the exit points on nuts that I'm not replacing. Another issue i see a lot of is slots that are too deep.

Thanks for mentioning the string depth problem. I forgot to mention that.

Reindeer bone or antler sounds best when I'm comping Christmas songs.

Pros and cons about roller nuts? I had two strats, one with metal roller pins and the other with ball bearings.

Too high of nut slots are also a big problem many don't talk about. They cause all kinds of tuning issues, especially on open or barre chords near the nut. I cut the slots way down on every guitar I buy or set up for friends (I use a joe glaser nut slot gauge personally).

I used to be able to name every nut that there was. And it used to drive my mother crazy, because she used to say, "Harlan Pepper, if you don't stop naming nuts," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start yelling. I'd say, "Peanut. Hazelnut. Cashew nut. Macadamia nut." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut.

A bigsby can drive you crazy when using slight vibrato as the wound strings can go sharp. It's not the Bigsby, it's the nut for the reasons you mentioned. Good video.

On the last kit I built I installed on fine tuned a brass nut. One of my first electrics had one back in the 70s and decided to give it a try again on another. I think the sound on open strings is different then say a bone nut.

Thanks for mentioning that, I didn't mention brass nuts in particular, but I even think they're coming back in style

Very informative. I’ve a couple guitars, purchased new, with tusq nuts from their respective factories and, just one guy’s experience, those are the two guitars that are easiest to tune. Perhaps the material self-lubricates, insert joke here, perhaps it’s just luck of the draw.

Some of the graphite infused nut lubricants seem to kill the tone and/or brightness of my Strats. Especially the unwound strings. Has anyone else experienced this?
@fretlessed255 сағат бұрын
My wound strings are never an issue. It's always either the G or B, and most often on my Gibsons where the string isn't a straight pass through. Though if Gibson cut the string right I'm sure they tried cutting it on the required angle to meet the tuner in a straight line.
