This just went down a treat at my Australian-based Kucios. I added a leek as well, and slightly less butter. We topped it with sour cream and dill. It got many compliments from the family. Thank you!

Fantastic! It's nice to know my families recipe is nearly the same. We do some stuff that makes it decadent though. I'm not sure why you have to add the bacon in hot though. We always let it cool a bit. Here's our method. Along with the bacon, add a half pound of tasty ham diced small. Double up the onion and instead of adding it raw to the potatoes put it in with all the meat and cook it until the onions turn golden and slightly caramelized. Don't burn them. You can cheat and add a TB of brown sugar. The only other thing we do is add a small can of condensed milk with the eggs.

I am half Lithuanian and recently decided to investigate the food (compared to Hungarian my other half)- found many dishes being similar. When I saw all of that bacon grease and butter going into this my jaw literally dropped open! No doubt this dish tastes good but, I suspect some adjustments could make this a whole lot healthier (as much as that is possible with a starch and lots of fat!). Not criticizing- just an observation.

I have the conically shaped one I picked up at a flea market. One of the best items I ever bought. I grate 5 obs of potatoes in 10 minutes. The potatoes just came out of the garden and had an incredible texture to them.

No one says "skanaus apetito"! It's "gero apetito"! It would be better to chop onions into smaller pieces and you don't need to add butter on top before baking. Even fried bacon is not necessary although it doesn't spoil the taste.

Your kugelis is a bit different than what I grew up with, but I’m sure everyone has their own special recipe. Thanks for sharing yours. One suggestion is that you should have someone check your English. You meant to say strips of bacon, not stripes. Also you meant to say scald, not scold.

You are gorgeous! My gran used to make something called kulduno, do you know what this is? And Kugelu? And also things called ousookies? She called them rabbits ears. I don't know spelling, sorry but that is how the words are pronounced. Can you help with those 3 dishes?
@Maskedman466 жыл бұрын
Labas...your spelling of Kugelu is not the correct spelling....Kugelis is the correct spelling and pronunciation for potato pudding...your ousookies are Ausuki for the pastry/cookies [rabbit ears]...and your Kulduno is not the correct spelling...correct is Koldūnai which are meat dumplings...Many Americans talk slang Lithuanian which is not correct in the authentic Lithuanian language....
@kristinyt5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I know I'm answering 2 years later, but I hope it still helps. :) I'm sure you mean "koldūnai" (dumplings), "kugelis" and "ausukės" (west highland dialect) or "ausytės" (in standart lithuanian; I'm pretty sure your gran was from west highlands of Lithuania if she called them like that :D Love it!) You can easy google the first two recipes online. Ausytės, on the other hand, are not so popular nowdays but my gran was also making these when I was a kid. For the dough you need: 0,5 l of whey or buttermilk, 2 eggs, 0,5 glass of sugar, 50 g butter or margarine, 0,5 teaspoon baking powder or soda, flour as much as it needs to make dough that could be rolled our evenly. Knead the dough well, roll it out, cut into diamond (5-7 cm long) shape and then make 1-2 cm cut in the middle of the diamond. Use this cut to put one corner of the diamond through it and to the other side (to make some kind of knot (I hope you can remember how ausytės should look like, cause it's hard to explain :D) Then fry both sides of your ausytės in oil. Decorate with some powdered sugar or cinamon (or both). Skanaus!
