There was a free Tekken Tag tournament machine at the pub my parents used to make me and my sister sit at while they pissed away the night getting drunk and inevitably screaming at each other. 8/10 game, stopped me from being an alkie and also provided that sweet sweet vidya escapism fix when I needed it most.

I love how you pointed out that tekken (above all else) is a feeling , a vibe , an aesthetic and it’s something that’ has influenced a lot of the media i seek out today. The music and visuals were just so influential on an entire generation of kids. It also doesn’t hurt that the gameplay throughout the entire series (even tekken 4 dammit) is so addicting. Throughout the years it’s gotten more and more difficult but that core system of high mid and low hits has stuck around and for that the gameplay has always been amazing

Something else 3d fighters have is that its possible to have alternate costumes. In sprite based fighters, it is enough hard work that it would be better to just put that effort into an actual new character.

Heihachi actually threw Kazuya off the cliff as a child and forced him to climb back up. based on the idea that 'if he was my son, he will be strong enough to climb back up'. This was actually to prove that Kazuya had the devil gene from his mother. Later Kazuya then did the same thing to Heihachi as a sort of revenge, just for then Heihachi to climb back up and once again, throw Kazuya off a cliff into a volcano. This is when the devil gene was 'activated' as a means to preserve the body it had taken over. There's actually a heck load of plot to tekken but in order to actually understand the story you have to play each game and get every characters ending and read all the dialogue etc. Interesting though, like learning Michele worked for Mishima corp as an Archaeologist but then fell in love and cancelled her work just for Heihachi to then wipe out her entire home town which is why she then fights in the iron fist tournaments, so she can exact her revenge on Heihachi for killing her family.

Ugh, these retrospectives are so good it breaks my heart that they don’t have more views! THH needs more subs, these folks is sleepin on a giant here! Oh well, I grew up a punk so I’m sure if THH got big I’d just be annoyed and tell everyone “I dug his channel BEFORE it was big” for a while before finally declaring the channel sold out and go to find another small channel to complain no one is watching...the circle of life. Also, early tekken taught me the lessons that no one cares, as my aunt got me the first one for a birthday and I hated it and this complained about it all year like a brat, and then the same aunt got me the sequel because she said I was always talking about the last one so much I must’ve really enjoyed it, thus highlighting that the adults in my life only actually listened to about a quarter of what I said. But then I fell in absolute love with tekken 2 and began my longstanding love affair with my homeboy Kazuya and his DEVIL GEEEEEEENNE ARGGHHHH! Also I rented the tekken anima movie (it’s like one of my anime movies! -otacon) and my prepubescent brain thought it was just...so cool. So that happened. Also, I keep editing this comment to add other childhood tekken memories (every “also” is an edit, and I don’t even wanna admit to all the others), so basically it’s just dawning on me that I need a friend.

Tekken 3 might be better but Tekken 2 just has such a unique feel and atmosphere that I love it so much. The music, the stages, it's wonderful. The first three Tekkens also have unique stages and music for every character. I miss that.

The main appeal the Tekken series had for me was that Martial Law looked like Bruce Lee. I grew up watching his movies and other martial art movies in the theatres. Later, way before the PS1 came out, I also used to watch every Saturday King's manga series protecting the orphanage he grew up in. And they put in Jackie Chan's clone, Lei Wu Long, making this my favourite fighting game series ever.

I honestly feel like this might be a fighting game for me cuz recently I was complaining to some friends exactly why I was kinda hating them recently - memorizing all the contextual combos and movements to be good. So it's super refreshing that this is something where you can just pick it up pretty easily. I'm straight up considering buying tekken 7. lol. Having played all old Tekken games extensively when they came out, Tekken 2 and TTT are my favorite "classic" Tekken games. They both have a great soundtrack and have style that I don't feel are there in Tekken 1 and 3. Yes, Tekken 2 is very stiff, but since I know the game from "back then" it is still playable to me. I really don't like the Tekken 3 soundtrack, it definitely bothers me when playing the game nowadays so I just play TTT which is better in most aspects anyways.
