One of the coolest things Tekken 4 did was set all of its stages in what was conceivably a single city/region. It made you feel like you were in an actual action moving set in a real location, rather than teleporting around the entire globe. Add to that the costumes and music, and it was the peak of style for the franchise.

I'm about to do something few would dare to do, and that is defend Tekken 4. Yes, it's a broken and slow fighting game. But is it the black sheep in the series? No, that would imply it failed in every department. Where Tekken 4 doesn't succeed in gameplay it excels in everything else. The music was the best since Tekken 2, it has the best version of Tekken force, it has the best costume designs, the best atmosphere, the best endings (from a story standpoint), one of the best intros in the series, it had the darkest tone, and it was the last Tekken game where Paul wasn't a fucking joke character. While the gameplay wasn't great, it was experimental and innovative for the series. You have to give them some credit for at least trying. If it weren't for Tekken 4, we'd have no Tekken 5 and that's often regarded as the best in teh series. It's just a shame the very best aspects of Tekken 4 weren't carried over to its sequels.
@thorhighheels7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I do actually agree. For a while it was actually my favorite Tekken game (or I thought it was at least) and in my separate review for the game that I did a while ago, I do harp on about it's positive aspects way more. Though I do prefer Tekken 5's story wise, but that's just a minor taste thing I guess. I think what ruins the game for me now, is that I just don't enjoy playing it anymore. I'm way to used to how Tekken functions these days, so I get either frustrated or bored with it. But even despite that, I may have been too negative for the sake of brevity. Sorry if I was.
@hopelessent.17007 жыл бұрын
NihilisticIdealist I was introduced to Tekken when I played 4. I really fell in love with that game and thought it was really fun. I played the first one and it was a cringe ride. I still appreciate it and play it whenever I like to go back to the classic PS1 games that I have missed because I was born into the PS2 era...
@YiddishDancingClown7 жыл бұрын
None of that matters in a fighting game. The gameplay is the only important thing in a fighting game and 4's core mechanics, stage design, characters, and fighting system were trash. Paul has never been a joke character. He's basic, but not a joke. Deathfist is a very real threat at any point in fighting against him. Also, Tekken 5 was hated on release too. It's Dark Resurrection that's considered the best.
@_Dee2nd6 жыл бұрын

It did to me, but then I only spent a few hours with T6 before I got sick of it, so I doubt I got the full gist of how it played. I do not know what is Bound. Tekken 4 was not properly reviewed here. I have not seen his separate review, but he did not mention how the entire left side of the face buttons/grab buttons were dedicated to position change grab moves. Also, everyone had parries. They tried to make this an MMA/street fight style game. Tekken with some realism. That's why the environments are the way they are in this game. That's a HUGE omission. Judging it based on that, and actually USING those mechanics should greatly change one's perspective of this underrated classic.

So many were so sure that Heihachi was dead forever. Eventually only one character remained locked, and everyone speculated as to who that was. You can probably imagine the hype online when it turned out to be Heihachi.

Kazuya was actually trying to prevent Jin from doing this which is why there is this clash of companies as they both use their money and power to complete their respective tasks.

I just found your channel and its pretty great. I know this video is like a year old but I want to address the claim that Tekken 6 introduced the rage mechanic and stage interactivity and nothing else. Tekken 6 also introduced the bound mechanic which is a combo extender allowing for every character to wall carry easier, low parry to punish low kick spam and reward players for prediction, and tracking moves to beat careless side stepping. These mechanics were used in Tekken Tag 2 and new mechanics such as the netsu system which causes rage to activate later or earlier depending on the relationship that certain characters have towards each other in the story as well as tag combos and balcony breaks. Tekken 7 on top of the hype features has crush counters, the already mentioned critical arts (those cutscene attacks), rage drive which are super powered moves that cost rage to activate and the tailspin mechanic which is essentially bound except it is slightly more difficult to continue the combo since it puts the opponent further away. That and the wake-up mechanics were changed slightly to make it easier for casual players. This stuff might not matter to a more casual crowd, but I think details such as these are worth mentioning in a retrospective even off hand. I still enjoyed the video though and I'm looking forward to more.

this was a great video probably one of your best. I loved the news segments and the bottem text. I see you been watching feminist rebuttal videos "is the mere existance of women sexist?". (Or you just reused one) And tekken tag 2 was a cool representation of the series and what it can be. Like the wii u versions having costumes from mario bros and funny things like that. It still is not tekken tag 1 which is my favorite because it was the first one i played as a young kid in fact i got tekken 3 as well from a gamestop and i didn't even know that ps2 can play ps1 games and that was my only ps1 game i played for 10 years. Tekken Bowl was the only paid DLC with no real incentive play it unless you have friends over for a laugh. Aside from that, Tekken 7 has never improved if you're not part of the FGC and there has been no indication that another game is even being made. A hypothetical Tekken 8 would have to massively improve on content and story but it could be worse by taking the Guilty Gear Xrd path and separating story and gameplay, which is why I couldn't be fucked with Guilty Gear Strive.

Fkn bullshit. I worked out that to buy it at full price with all the DLC would be about $400AUD. I refused to buy it because I don't want to support the dodgy EA model of cutting stuff that should be included in the base game and selling it for extra as DLC. Greedy wankers. Anyway great vidya. My top 5 Tekkens (and pretty much only ones I still play): 5: Tekken Tag 2 4: Tekken 5 3: Tekken Tag 2: Tekken 2 1: Tekken 3 Admittedly the dreaded N O S T A L G I A plays a part in that (especially on tekken 2) but imo Tekken 1 has aged pretty badly compared to the sequels, Tekken 4 is sluggish, Tekken 6 relied too much on stupid juggling mechanics and i've not played Tekken 7 yet and not sure I wanna haha. As you say it's a stagnant series; post-tekken tag the series has ended up being pretty forgettable and despite 5's quality i'd say that's also a stagnant one too. Just very generic.

@@cidfacetious3722 It can be stagnant and still fun. Hell, people still play TTT over Tekken 7 here.

21:00 You can switch to whom you ever want to lock on. If you customize your buttons that is. The red and blue triangles above the enemy's health show yours and Alisha's respectively locked on enemy (duh). Aside from the rewards being new ways to dress up your fighters, the bonus stats of each piece gives you an advantage over the enemies you encounter as you further progress. Logically, they become much stronger and more numerous in further stages with almost all of main characters as end bosses. It is a fun, all though not too deep, rpg mechanic. You can freeze, electrify, up your attack damage or defence, higher money/item drop rate, etcetera. Quite addictive if you want all pieces with an S or A rating for all fighters, depending on the difficulty you're playing. The bad thing about it is the micro management aspect of it since there are hundreds of items with an S,A,B,C,D, rating, and especially because drops have a lot of repeated items . The story is nothing to write home about but you never play these games for the story. Even if it's appreciative it's there. Sorry for the rant. I thought I had to clear things up a little on the already extensive and fantastic infotainment piece.

@ThorHighHeels What in the hell could drive you to qualify Tekken 4 as a "slow game", time and again, is absolutely beyond me. I know fighting games ain't your thing per se, you've been upfront about it, but still, that statement there is so overwhelmingly wrong it hurts ! Tekken 4 is by far the most fast-paced entry in the series up to that point. We could easily go frame data on this, but hell, it's obvious just *looking* at the game, let alone play it. I left it alone the first few times, but I finally had to say something. Pardon the bluntness.

I kind of liked the retrospective, but I believe you didn't research the games enough. You forgot to mention important mechanics, such as just frames, and the impact of the game in the esports scene. You kinda skimmed through the last 4 games and didn't even mention the reasons why they're so good.

Are you out of your fucking mind?! Tekken 4 has the best soundtrack and vibe, it was a nice compromise between 2 and 3's dark and edgy vibes. Authentic Sky is a masterpiece
