Welcome to the first proper KZbin video by Ideas Matter!
In this video Louis gives a run through of John Rawls' seminal text "A Theory of Justice" published in 1971.
A Theory of Justice is a must-read for anyone interested in Anglo-American political theory. It spawned the liberal-communitarian debate which dominated the academy for twenty years and produced some of the most well-known names in political philosophy: Michael Sandel, Alasdair Macintyre, Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer.
You've probably heard of the "veil of ignorance" and the "original position" - but just what are these conceptual devices and how do they serve Rawls' argument? Watch and find out!
Don't forget to like and subscribe and let me know in the comments what you think of Rawls' argument.

This is really good. Many KZbin channels talking philosophy gloss over the generic points of a book offering no real thought of their own. It’s obvious you put a lot of work into these, and are grappling with these ideas and are wringing them out. It’s a pleasure to listen to.

Thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you like my approach, I'm no expert so I am definitely grappling with these ideas in real time.

Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately I have no control over the level of ads. My account is so small that I am not even eligible for monetisation. Apologies that KZbin ruined your experience

you hate liberalism, so what are you politically speaking?

Thanks for your comment. I don't believe I ever said that I "hate" liberalism. There's much to like about it, such as defending individual liberty against arbritrary state power. I am, however, critical of liberalism in several respects. First, I think it overstates how "rational" humans are. This makes it quite naive in the area of economics, for example. Second, liberalism does not do enough to ensure that everyone has access to the liberties which it defends. A purely negative conception of freedom is insufficient. The first critique is one often made by conservatives, the second is one made by socialists. So, whatever label you wish to ascribe to is fine, but there's lots of value to be found across multiple philosophical traditions.
