I agree with wearing clothes you feel good in but I also think that the human eye likes analogous color combination or gets disturbed by complementary color combinations of equal chroma. That's why some colors look good (or not) or this or that skin tone.

What a coincidence!! I just looked into the 4 seasons color type thing for the past two weeks and boy, that stuff is magic! Now I understand why I don't wear some pieces that are hanging in my closet (in colors I like to look at but I don't look good wearing them) and why I tend to wear the same pieces over and over again - because they are in MY color! I agree with you that some swatches have like 30 colors in them which is stupid, but some of them have for example seven best suiting colors and it's very helpful! I recommend to everybody to google some info and pictures and try some of their colors, you will love it! P.S. I bet those colors you got compliments on are your winter type colors! They just make your skin glow! ;)

Lauren has a good eye, so she doesn't need to think about color theory. Maybe she didn't even need to learn it, and could just see it! Some of us need to learn it formally because we just don't have that "eye" (an artistic sense), and a formal explanation helps us to understand it. :-) I am sorry, Lauren, but if a color doesn't suit you (and you are so color blind, you can't see it), the rules won't be broken successfully! It's going to look bad: neither fresh, nor modern.

Actually, I think Lauren Messiah is a bright spring, like me. It's a confusing season. It's easy to believe that you are a bright winter, but highly pigmented spring colors work better. I however loan colors from the bright winter palette so often, and wear black so well, that it breaks the rules to the point of making color theory sound invalid.I still find value in color theory, because when in doubt (since I am not an artist), I can always look it up before I buy. :-)

I agree that color theory is wonderful. I think its a good start for someone who doesn't understand fashion. It really helped me alot. It can be used as a beginner tool. I used the color theory and body shape to help me pick clothes that flatter me. I respect the body i have instead of wanting to be some other size. You can move on from it once you become more comfortable with what works for you.

Knowing what colors look good on you and which bring out flaws is important. Color analysis can save people time, money and frustration. Maybe they don't get any compliments and it's BC of the colors they're wearing. You seem to be knocking color theory as a science yet still using the benefits it provides as a tool in your practice.

Hello! I am subscribed to your channel and love your work, so I hope you take my comment in the loving way it is intended...I was really shocked you used the word "stupid" (repeatedly) to describe an idea you simply disagree with. You've always come across so professional...this particular video seemed out of character. I wished you had instead used words as "unnecessary" or "too strict" or "not foolproof" or even "sales-driven" to frame your opinion on color consulting. While I agree with you that it'd be more useful to identify "most flattering" vs. "least flattering" colors and that most people shouldn't feel bound to creating a wardrobe to reflect their "season"; calling [most things] stupid sounds outright childish; it's the kind of thing someone does when they have no evidence or sound arguments to back up their views. I know that's not your case. You've been in the business for quite a while and seem to be a business savvy person, so I'm sure you know how important is to protect one's brand from controversy and misunderstandings. Please don't tarnish your accomplishments by being too casual with the language. Again, all said in love and with the best intentions at heart. My best wishes for continued success!

Hello Lauren, thank you for your great videos! I've spent hours watching them one after another. As for the theory of colors and the seasonal colour palettes, I must confess that it changed my life! I finally know why I looked (and felt) older when wearing black. You should try it and maybe it helps you too. Please dont stop recording, I love your precious advices!

The depth of color makes a huge difference as well. For instance, I'm warm toned, but also very pale. Theoretically red and orange should look good on me, but those are some of my least favorite colors to wear. It's usually when the color is too bright or deep that it looks overwhelming on me. Muted, paler reds and oranges look much better, even though they're still not my favorite colors. I still don't really feel like I've found MY color.

Hi Lauren, I am so disappointed that you had to do such a negative video regarding colour and image consultants. I am an Image Coach from Canada and colour analysis is not so old school anymore. There are many benefits helping a client to see what colours work with their skin tone and their wardrobe. So many people buy the wrong colours that end up sitting in their closet because in the end they just done work for them. Many people are attracted to colours that are actually opposite to their best colours. I have been following you as I really enjoyed your advice and knowledge, but was so disappointed in the tone of this video.

Yes. Color is an important element of style. However, I don't believe the basic "seasonal" color groups that many stylists adhere to are accurate, because many women overlap categories. But I do agree that color can make a big difference. In fact, Hilary Clinton's campaign pantsuits are a perfect example of this. So Lauren is right about the fact that color may have a greater impact on mature women.

Hi Lauren! I loved to learn about the term jewel tones and I'd say they're my thing all year round, though they're on top for the spring-summertime along with pastels. So I would say I feel great totally great in them. Faves are emerald, red, neon yellow, orchid pink, burnt orange, royal blue and crisp white. I'm lucky since I live in a warm climate and experimenting is possible. On the other hand, autumn is great in olive green, mustard, brown, camel and of course burgundy. In winter I love mixing textures of black and adding white or nude to break the darkness. For me neutrals are staples and I love mixing them with jewel tones or to soften a colour block outfit.

Hey Lauren! Thanx for this video. I think I was one of the ones who asked you this question lol! I totally agree with you. I've had some styling classes and color theory was their base, but I never even liked my colour season so I was all depressed about that hahaha and whenever I tried to dress myself I got all tangled in the theory. Hated it. So thank you very much for clarifying that up. And thanx for the tips too!

I agree with colours that you feel great in, that you get compliments etc hence colour/tone is so important and proven. Neutrals washed out my mother and orange and some greens with yellow undertones make my daughter look sick. We don't have to be so strict in rules but learn what works and what doesn't is so important. Thanks for sharing your opinion as well.

I kinda feel what you're saying... but it goes back to color theory because, when a stranger compliments you, it's probably that color you're wearing makes your eyes look bright and alive, and allows the tosiness in your cheeks to show. I also studied color theory , and I agree with it. I love golds ,warm brown, that sea foamy green...like some of the autumn colors...but they make me look dull and sallow, because the colors dont play well with my skin...I look flat in some colors, also bright reds....i look like a gang banger lol...where as a more plumy red ,maroon looks great on me...also royal blue... But I see your side too. I think whatever we feel good in, it should be the ultimate deciding factor.

I'm not so sure about your viewpoint here. Case in point, my hair is graying and I've decided not to dye my hair. Since, I've made this decision, I've noticed that certain colors in my wardrobe no longer look right. But I didn't know why. When I was in a store, I chose something I liked that was gray simply because I liked the pattern on the top. Instantly, I noticed that I looked better and brighter wearing the gray top; it looked great with my hair and skin. Black and white also look okay with my graying hair but since I'm middle-aged, the black also highlighted my skin imperfections, slight wrinkles, and shadows (as you accurately pointed out). I once read that gray hair typically looks best with jewel tones and not earth tones. But I scoffed at the whole jewel tones for gray hair thing the way you're doing in this video. I scoffed until I noticed that earth tones look dull on me, look awful next to my hair, and the jewel tones brighten my graying hair and brighten my skin! It would be tempting, kind of fun, and freeing to throw caution to the wind about all the rules regarding color theory! However, in the end it simply doesn't work for me, personally. It CERTAINLY doesn't work for make-up. One must choose makeup that complements their skin. I don't think the rules are all that dramatically different for clothing.

Hey, Lauren. I'm loving these videos. Thank you. Here's my question. I'm over 60 and love wearing black. My husband says I rock it (and not in that "does this make me look fat" way, but honestly suggesting I wear it). Can it be so that older women can wear black? I hope so. It's my favorite neutral. I'd love some general advice for us older women. Thanks.

By the way Lauren, I missed your former outfits in which you added more solid colours and statement jewellery. Now you're more stuck to black and neutrals with a minimalist apporach, which is great but colour gives life and joy to our eyes ;P Please please more colour!

Hi, Lauren! I cannot wear brown, tan, beige, yellow, and orange (unless it's a deep red-orange). These colors male me look dead. I look best in red, royal blue, royal purple, and black. I can do emerald green, although I am not crazy about green. No pale colors look good on me. I can wear white. Thanks for all of your tips!

Hi Lauren, can you do a video about gaping shirts/ shirts for people who are a bit busty on top. My bust is a bit big on my frame and most of my shirts tend to gape or I have unbutton it lower and wear a cami under. Thank you!

I would definitely appreciate a video on this topic. Is it tacky to unbutton a bit on top and bottom with a simple cami under and a blazer on top? Curvy + button-up shirts=problematic, but I love the polished look. What a dilemma.

This was great I am a paler girl but I have a very feminine style. Whites, pale pinks and yellows are my staples! According to the color code these aren't my colors. I could care less these colors make me feel confident! People compliment me when I wear them and I believe that it is not because they match my skin tone, but because they match my personality!

I enjoy your videos--but I think you are really off on this. You are actually contradicting yourself. I can guarantee that the days you are complimented and the colors your clients say make them feel better are the ones on the pallet. As an artist--I am very aware of how colors effect other colors and create harmony. I "did" my own colors a few years back and it has been amazing. I think you should rethink this and offer this service to your clients. As far as jewel tones--I am a light summer and jewel tones are too bright and harsh for me.
