As a student of Pascal since 1977 when I discovered his writings in my mother's collection of Great Books, I heartily endorse this depiction by great journalist and writer, Malcolm Muggerridge. My only qualm is that I myself wish Pascal had finished his apologetic for Christianity. Still, what we have from him is a treasure indeed.

I got the impression that Muggeridge was defending Jansenism, which was condemned by the Catholic Church, and rightly so! Jansenism was a form of voluntarism and involved double predestination (if not in so many words). God was seen primarily in terms of power (omnipotence) rather than love or mercy. Jansenism has more in common with Calvinism and Islam (Ash'arism in particular) than it does with anything one finds in the NT and the early church. No where in scripture does it say: "God is power"; but it does say that "God is love". And 'he' certainly doesn't predestine certain individuals to 'hell' in order to display his sovereignty!

The difference between Jansenist and Jesuits is just verbiage . It’s Pascals Wager that matters .
