A Thrilling Journey to Grimsel Hospiz: The Most Remote Winter Hotel in Switzerland

In today's episode we will visit the most remote winter hotel in Switzerland, Grimsel Hospiz. It's located near the Grimsel Pass, which is closed for many months in winter. Only way there is by using bus, two cable cars and unbelievable tunnel labyrinth connecting several power dams in the mountains.

Thanks a lot, Urška! 😀 I saw somewhere on the internet the page that it’s the most remote winter hotel in Switzerland and thought about how cool idea is to visit such a place… So we arranged jokertag for our son and went there for one night from Friday to Saturday. Díky moc, Honzo! 😀 Nu, byla tam kosa 🥶 Původně jsem chtěl točit noční timelapse s tím mirrorless obrázkostrojem, ale při skoro -20 ℃ a větru jsem se bál, že mu zmrzne uzávěrka... A tak jen krátký timelapse s GoPro za oknem 🧊 Nu, a na drona to také nebylo, přimrzající mlha nedělá vrtulkám v zimě moc dobře ❄️ Dělají tam ale exkurze do těch elektráren, tak bych se tam chtěl ještě podívat a snad i něco proletět v okolí...

It was close to -20°C at night and windy... So I took only few photos and filmed short timelapse (star trails) with GoPro behind the window... @@simple31 Thanks, my dear friend 😀👍🏻 I am already studying articles on how to take care of camera in the very low temperatures 🧊. It seems that biggest issue is possible water condensation when you will bring it back to the warm place - it can destroy the camera. I would like to try some nice winter night star timelapses, so will definitely give it another chance 👍🏻

You are like on a small island in the middle of mountains and you can't go to far from there as on two sides is the lake, on one side is a ridge and the closed road is full of snow with the risk of avalanches... So you can just enjoy the hospitality, reading books, eat really delicious food, make a walk or take a sauna/bath...

Děkuji moc, Petře! 😀 Když jsem tu stránku o nedostupném zimním hotelu zahlédl, řekl jsem si, že by bylo prima se tam vypravit... A stálo to za to, zvláště to večerní koupání v zasněženém sudu. Byla tam ale velká zima v noci, a tak jsem se bál nechat v -20 stupních velký foťák na mrazu... A tak jen krátký timelapse z GoPro, které jsem nechal vymrznout za oknem 🥶

Thanks a lot! 🤩 Unfortunately it was really very cold 🥶 to fly with the drone - the freezing fog is not good for the propellers. Just found out recently that you can use the liquid to put on the propellers to avoid ice formation on them... 🧊

Thanks so much for your kind words, Christian! 😀 I had a lot of fun making this video as I was looking forward to that adventure as a small kid 😂 The only downside was that it was really cold there, at night it was close to -20 ℃ | -4 ℉, so I was not feeling comfortable to leave my new mirrorless camera outside in that cold and wind 🥶 So I made several night photos from the window and put the GoPro behind the window for a while (as I was not afraid about it - considering it is an action camera). Drone conditions were also little tricky - there was short window with a good weather (but we were playing with my son in the snow at that time) and later the wind and freezing fog/cloud made it too risky to fly... Now I'm studying articles on how to properly take a care of cameras in cold temperatures and find out that you can put some de-freezing liquid on the propellers of a drone to avoid ice condensation, so hopefully I will be better ready for the next adventure 😀👍🏻

What a beautiful video on your trip to the Grimsel Hotel! I had to look it up as I don't recall the name. I am not sure if I have been there as I see it is close to Interlaken which I visited long ago. Oh, I saw in your "about" that you have traveled extensively but have not see lava flow. Go to Guatemala. I believe right now there are three live erupting volcanoes. Years ago, I visited one called Pacaya. I climbed to the rim and got some amazing shots. It was blowing up about every 10 seconds. Lava was being thrown 200 meters or more with each eruption. There was also a lava river flowing around the backside which was not too far from where I was standing. I believe it was about 20 meters wide.

Thanks so much for the great tip! 🤩 Pre-covid we were planning trip to Hawaii, but that famous lava flow dried up for sometime... And I also missed the recent chance on the Iceland. We've seen erupting volcano, when we visited Stromboli island close to Sicily, but the eruption was not including the flowing lava... 🌋 Putting Guatemala and Pacaya volcano on the wishlist 👍🏻 Grimsel Pass is one of the three connected mountain passes - Furka, Susten and Grimsel, not so far from the Interlaken and Brienzer lake... We visited SustenPass and famous rollercoaster-like funicular close to Grimsel in late autumn, just as they were about to close the passes before the winter. But when I read an article, that the hotel in Grimsel Pass stays open in the winter, I was convinced about the idea to go there... Originally I planned to film night sky, as the star visibility there is outstanding, but it was sooo cold, that I was scared to break my camera 🥶🧊 Really appreciate your nice comment and great suggestion! 😀👍🏻 Wish you a wonderful day! 🙋🏻‍♂️

Thanks! 😀 It's really an awesome place, but it was really cold there... So no drone footage as there was only short period where the weather was permissive, but at that time we were playing with my son in the snow... I originally wanted to film the night sky with R5C, but it was close to -20C and I was afraid that camera will freeze in the wind (e.g. shutter). So I took only few night photos... Star trails and lightpaintings were done with the GoPro - I wanted to try those modes and it was working really well. Night timelapse on GoPro turned out to be without stars as there was a bright light from in the view and it likely messed up the metering - so I have night timelapse with 3 or 4 brightest stars only 😀

Jediný zádrhel, že při té velké zimě se Ti tvořil v tom sudu led na vlasech 😀a trochu to klouzalo, když jsi vylézal, protože to rychle mrzlo🥶 Původně jsem chtěl natočit noční hvězdný timelapse, ale zima byla tak velká (skoro -20 ℃), že jsem se tentokrát bál tam velký foťák v tom mrazu a větru nechat 🧊 Tak jsem jen strčil na chvilku GoPro za okno 😀Tomu velká zima nevadí...
