Still have my bike from 1989, with the original Tioga rear tyre on it! The front tyre tore up in the 90's so was replaced by a Tioga Hound Dawg! Of course, it is a 26 incher and fully rigid but I still ride it as my daily (50 next year, so not exactly a daily rider anymore)!

My buddy bought a 2004 Specialized Demo 9 new when we were working at a shop just outside Atlanta, Ga with hopes of trips to Whistler, Snowshoe, etc, but life got in the way. Not once has it seen an actual downhill trail. Now he has a new downhill park (Jarrod’s Place) only 45 minutes from his house, but he’s in his mid 40’s with toast knees and 3 kids. One day I’ll peer pressure him enough to blow out what’s left of his cartilage to see how that bike handles!

I have an old 2013 GT Force LE which has a 66 head angle and 72 seat angle. There's basically no sag on the fork when seated pedaling at full extension lol. It's odd compared to the steeper angles on my newer bikes. I never realized it at the time and it felt great. Looking at some of the older sub 70 seat angles is just bizarre. The Bottom bracket is almost in the middle of the wheelbase.

I dunno, current geo for trail and enduro bikes is in the golden era. The bikes in general climb really well because of the steep seat angles and the linkages and suspension are for the most part sorted out and work really well. Back like 10 years ago there were some really good bikes (Turner RFX and Burner) and some crap (Stumpies). The biggest threat to the market right now is SRAM imposing wireless shifting on the market.

There is a reason why slopestyle and DJ bikes are still steep and short - older DH bikes are definitely better for that purpose than today's plows
@PeterCPRail87486 ай бұрын
Today's bikes are designed for crazy ass speed taking alot of the trail out of the Equation. Older bikes made you pick your lines better and it was super fun riding. Like trying to stay on a bucking bull. Today the ride is much more muted. This is why aggressive HT bikes are blowing up in popularity. Just a funner scarier ride.
@ROSE-by5su6 ай бұрын
There’s no reason why Slopestyle steep and short it’s just the geometry numbers that needed. The reason why it take so long for bigger bikes geometry to get figured out because they are pumping money out of people, The geometry numbers are already figured out they just tricking you with “new geometry” “new things” “new innovation”. Head angles are already figured out (63.5-62), Stack numbers are still there getting updates everytime (They should have sticked with 240-260 or 250-260 stack). Proportional chainstay and reach numbers are now out there, BB heights are going back to zero drop or positive (Idiots tried to add bb drop like bruh sag was already a bb drop they just asking for crank strikes) what’s next hmmmm maybe a “creative engineer” will add a aero package on bikes and a disc protector acting up like we are on MOTOGP or MXGP
@PeterCPRail87486 ай бұрын
@ROSE-by5su exactly every major change since 2015 is a bullshit gimmick. Only the dropper do I find beneficial. Boost super boost and slacking the bike .5 to 1 degree each season or every two is pathetic so is going 1x11 1x12 and now apparently 1x13. Every rider I know and myself only use 4 to 5 of preferred cassette cogs 70% to 90% of the time. I still ride a 1x10 11to48 spread and have no issues keeping up with 1x11 or 12 drive trains. Bikes will top out at 62 61 headtube angle as anything slacker will be unridable on tight hair pin turn trails. That's why alot of 140 mm or less travel bikes are still above that 65 degree number. Makes tight trails still rideable poppy and fun. Now with the crap gimmick of wireless dropper and shifting they already working on wireless brakes not to menation ABS braking. Like really it's a bike not a car or moto GT bike. The industry is committing suicide like paintball did. Post 2008 global financial crisis the sport never recovered. Mass fields, stores and manufacturers closed down globally. Now its back to early 90s numbers when it was a real niche unknown sport activity before it blew up. Simply because they gauged the consumer with incremental changes at high costs. People started to realize what they where paying to play and simply stopped. Mtb is heading in the same direction. With the current mass inflation global crises I lost many of my +40 fellow riders I ride with to hicking and gravel riding. Some have bought older xc rigs for dirt cheap converting them to gravel. While selling off there mtb bikes once they came to terms this sport is becoming to dam expensive, even just to keep your bike spinning at peak performance. I am still riding my 2015 gaint trance and have no intention of upgrading at these insane prices. I just upgrade parts as they fail.

Yes, bikes used to be built a lot better because they were built of heaver stronger components. The race to save weight was not an issue. Yes, tech improvements have come a long way for the better in ride feel, but durability in components and frames is shit. By the way, I got that same raceface stem, and its Awsome put it on every bike i have owned since purchase back in 2001.

2010 allmountain bikes sucked compared to modern bikes. Weak brakes, bad geo, weak frames, bad suspension, weak rims, inner tubes constantly getting snakebit, no dropper post, 3x ring in the front, long ass stems... There is a massive difference in new bikes to 10+ years back. 2015-2017 was a transitionary period where these glaring problems got ironed out.

Early MTBs were pretty sketchy to ride. The trails were rutted and bombed out. There weren't many trails other than BMX trails that had jumps. Jumping a big framed, hard tail, skinny tire, and awkward XC dimensions was not fun. You mainly went up the trail and then back down the trail at a high rate of speed with no weight on the handle bars skimming over the wash outs and erosion. It was good exercise and a good way to cover single track trails. That was not the Golden Era of Mountain Bikes. Today, we have way more capable bikes, way better trails, way better options, way better service centers, and more places you can go. That is a blessing and a curse. Back in the '80s you could ride the single tracks around the Denver area without seeing another bike or hiker. I could ride my bike down the trail at Waterton Canyon right before sunset and catch trout with only the bats to keep me company. Those were better times but definitely not better bikes.
