Jim, what Jon Jeter said. Its the commentary and shared experience of doing things yourself. Everyone who works can tell you about things that they have done wrong. What many people don't do is share their experience with a laugh and explain like you do what they would do different next time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and humour. Z

Jim; New sub got up to speed on the channel have watched all the vids now. Really enjoy your style and the down to earth talk. Not doing any TF but I still have picked up a lot of info on mortise/tenon work that I'll use (on a smaller scale), so keep up the good work. Semper FI

Several things that can make a man cry. One is dropping a chisel on concrete after spending hours getting it sharp. I do hope you get the parts soon but the benefit for me is to see how you cut this joint without it. So your forsner bit is the same size as your width of the mortis? I just assumed it would be a size smaller. Don't worry about being redundant. I certainly enjoy them as I am sure others do too.
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Jeff LaBrozzi use the same size bit as the mortise if you can, saves a lot of time. I do like cutting them by hand as well though.

grab you a cheap tool cart, or fab it. Perfect for throwing that stuff on a cart right quick is solid gold Mr Jim. Great video btw, always down to adapt and overcome

Been a long day here, I read that as you leaving a cart on the roof at first lol You're getting there Brother, be sure to have a little left to enjoy it when you hit the finish line, ya here?

+Rk Stewart plenty of gas in the tank...have to work on it when I have the time.

Suck it up Sally. LOL Mortice looks better and smoother with the chisels anyway. Ever tried to offset a 1 inch bit where the 2 inch bit leaves the "triangles"(before cutting the 2 inch holes)?
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Russell I have not tried that dancing man, we'll try it out.
@thomasarussellsr7 жыл бұрын
TheTradesmanChannel 2017 would reduce the chisel work a bit.

Thanks for more TF videos. One small piece of advice... When you are shooting your work detail, put your camera at an oblique angle (about 45 degrees up and 45 to the side). It gives a better three dimensional perspective.
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Thane Grooms I'll do that. I have another to edit but I'll give it a shot on the next one I film. I like the TF videos myself. Going to be a whole lot more coming down the pike.

Just pitch the mortiser in a box and I'll send you a shipping label. You don't really need it... Keep rockin' on and posting vids.

Where you get the sharpening stone from and what's the stuff you put on it?
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+adam klump good evening. That's a Norton stone, fine on one side, coarse on the other. I found that one on Amazon a few years ago. That's just chain oil, normally I use 3 in 1 oil but I'm out and that was handy.
@GhostPhriek7 жыл бұрын
I think you need to change the series title to "Jim vs. The Barn!" Don't worry about seeming redundant. There's solid information in every video and usually a good laugh (or several).

Is it necessary to use the corner chisel in your mortise? Can the mortise be cut without the corner chisel?
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Mike Scheve it can be cut with a regular chisel, just easier with a corner chisel.

Dear Jim, I really like the intro music; one gets the feeling your clip is about to have a lot of suspense. As for your haircut & "T" shirt; well if it didn't have the "The Timber Framers Guild", you look like a young army recruit. I am glad you have the wisdom to leave that morticer alone rather than fly off the handle. As for your planned roof; I am delighted to hear you'll go for a Gambrel roof as it does offer more headroom compared to a traditional one. I just cannot wait to see that. What happened to your Merle Haggard music??? How about "I walk the line" by Johnny Cash??? Till next time, kind regards.

Timber frame size lumber is non exsistatant in So Calif so I can only dream I know your plate is full judging by your comments but have you considered a timber framing project useing Home despotic sized lumber maybe a garden shed or chicken coop sized project
@waltlars36877 жыл бұрын
I built a chicken coop useing coroplast political Yard signs and Kreg pocket jig
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Walt Lars I have not but we can in the future. I do plan to do a greenhouse at some point timber framed of course.
@waltlars36877 жыл бұрын
I would imagine that there are a lot of people stuck in a suburban houseing track with out access to timber framing sized lumber I am tinkering with the idea of a green house useing PVC pipe built into trusses instead of the hoop design since a lot of the greenhouse square footage is lost because of the low roof area near edges
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+Walt Lars build with whatever you can, as long as it works that's all that matters.

I can never figure out why chain mortisers are so expensive. $4300 around these parts for a 7104L. Even a great Stihl chainsaw is only around $2000. Hopefully you'll get yours fixed soon.

Remember when chopping out a 2" mortise off set by 2" you chop the side closest to the outside first, that establishes the 2" offset, then you make the mortise 2" wide. After you chop the ends as the mortise is 2" wide and the 2" chisel will fit in.
@TheTradesmanChannel7 жыл бұрын
+JimRogers117 good advice as usual.
