awesome way for these people to grow there own food..very quickly and efficiently...the brilliance of teaching them is that the skill set will now progress among these people...they will learn buy the challenges of this method,as this method has to be monitored and maintained to prevent failures that could happen..but it would seem that they are in good hands with the missionaries and real nice setup they built..good to see them reclaiming for resources as well.....

Muy bien hecho FELICITACIONES. I have a question: do you have to build a canopy like a green house to protect the plants from bugs coming from the trees or other plants? I built one system in my basement and the bugs came from outside and as there are not natural predators, the bugs multiplied very soon.

Are you wondering “what is aquaponics?” The most simple definition is that it is the marriage of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the growing plants and the plants provide a natural filter for the water the fish live in. The third participants are the microbes (nitrifying bacteria) and composting red worms that thrive in the growing media. They do the job of converting the ammonia from the fish waste first into nitrites, then into nitrates and the solids into vermicompost that that are food for the plants. In combining both systems aquaponics capitalizes on the benefits and eliminates the drawbacks of each.

Love this. What was it like after planting?
@williamwagner3 жыл бұрын
This is Bill. This project had a great deal of promise. After the dozen missionaries left and the 6 week period to build up the bacterial colonies was finished a number of plants were planted. Lemon grass seemed to be stout enough to weather the harsh rains and winds. The rains definitely had its tolls on the other plants. Eventually, the rains caused a weakness under the base due to erosion. It was rebuilt in January of that next year, but growing things seemed to be a major problem as was mentioned above. The lemon grass seemed to flourish. The next year in visiting, a drainage system was put in along a greenhouse. This seemed to answer the issues created by the rain and wind. Soon after (6 months), the missionaries housing the system was forced to move due to a raise in rent. The system has been dismantled and is sitting in storage waiting for my next return in April/ May of 2022. Other projects in Haiti and Africa have done very well. The keys are keeping and maintaining the water nutrients and pH levels maintained. Check out this link for other systems that are working. www.communities-of-hope.org/ This website is from my friend, Don. If you are interested in other projects I have done such as Rocket Stoves, Ovens, Water Storage, and Raised Grow beds, please check my KZbin channel. Have you noticed any problems with build up of solids from the water in the grow beds? Are you able to maintain the water level in the sump tank to keep the fish comfortable?
@williamwagner3 жыл бұрын
You are perceptive. There can be a buildup of roots after a while, but an addition of worms can help in the clean up of this debris, but to put things into perspective, it would take a great deal of planting seasons before you' d have a build up of solids. As it relates to maintaining water levels in the tank, there is always the issues of evaporation over a weeks period of time, but that can be remedied by adding water as it lowers. Make sure when adding water pH and nitrate levels are maintained. Fish don't like pH levels out of line and plants don't like out of bounds levels in nitrates. You can watch several other videos related to this one. One deals with the water flo of this type of system and the other is a real time view of a build. They can be seen on my channel: William Wagner. Click playlists and then aquaponics. Thanks again first your question.

I read the advertisement. Yes, aquaponics is a great way to grow plants without the headaches that were pointed out in the link advertisement you listed. Don has his own system and directs builds here in the US and in other countries (Haiti and Honduras) to mention a few. The results are amazing. My part in the process of putting out there a video build of a system to demonstrate a process of building an aquaponics system that will assist anyone in producing growing plants using the nutrient rich waste material from fish. If you watch our A Real Time View of an Aquaponics System Build, you will see the build in a modular way, not a step by step basis, of a build.At the end of the video, you will discover a website link to attain a materials list we used in the build for free. Bonne idee malheuresement elle n'est pas expliquée dans le detail :par quel processus l'eau fait le circuit ? Merci.
@williamwagner5 жыл бұрын

please could you tell me why is it filed with stones ? is it to maintain the roots wet?
@williamwagner7 жыл бұрын
The stones allow for a great number of advantages than lets say regular soil. It will allow for the water to fill and lower without keeping the roots of the plant overly wet. Since the grow beds are on a 45-50 min. cycle of flooding and draining. This will allow the water to be purified as it cycles back to the fish tank while the draining water allows the rocks to then allow oxygen to get to the roots. Any nitrates gained from the fish waste will be absorbed by the roots during the flooding process.

hello this is Luis my question is this. the water need to be running 24/7? how do you prevent from algae and fungus
@williamwagner8 жыл бұрын
In this system, the water is running 24/7. It cycles approximately every 45 minutes to an hour. The cycling of the water provides oxygen to the fish and prevents the water from stagnating. As it relates to you question on the prevention of algae and fungus, I will defer to Don. He is the one that guided the construction of the system. Generally Algae will be held down from the lack of sunlight to the water source. Since the fish tank is buried mostly under ground, sunlight comes from the top. In Don's personal system, he places cardboard around the fish tank. Some paint the fish tank black.

Bill and I are putting together a how to video on every detail of the system. It is very simple and easy to build. The U siphon is an upside down U. One leg of the U goes through the bottom of the barrel and the other is cut off at an angle just about the bottom of the barrel. When the water level reaches the cross over point the water will begin to siphon out quickly. This cycle continues to produce the flood and drain needed for the grow beds

What is the purpose of all this, filtering water or growing something?
@williamwagner5 жыл бұрын
. It appears that you have a grasp on the system and its function. The end result is to grow food that can help the community around the missionary house. Those assisting in the build were other missionaries that either there to learn more about aquaponics and its value in a 3rd world setting or refining their skills in the building of such a system. A real time view of this build can be seen on my channel at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5DapKCwjb6Ln8k. There are other videos on this build on this channel. Check them out.

what was the white material you used to spray the growbeds
@williamwagner6 жыл бұрын
The white material used as a means of spraying are white PVC caps with a 1/4" whole drilled in the end to allow the water to be distributed into each grow bed. This system is a flood and drain one. We have an extended project. It can be located by typing the title, A Real Time View of an Aquaponics System. The video is about 45 minutes long. The longer version gives you a more in depth view of the same build with added comments and insights gained from years of building a number of systems. At the end of the longer video there is a place where you can ask for a list of materials needed to build the system. We have also post three other videos that give more explanation the aquaponics system. They are: A View of the U Siphon and Its Function on an Aquaponics System, The Key Points of the Water Flow in an Aquaponics System, and Brief Overview of the Components of an Aquaponics System. why are there two holes? I don't get it...
@bigrandy19588 жыл бұрын
Ken Lee The bottom hole is for when the bell siphon empties the tank... It's an ebb and flow system, and the top hole is for overflow in case there is a malfunction with the bell siphon and it doesn't engage. Water would pour over the top of the tank and run out onto the ground, eventually emptying the sump tank.

3'x27'. The tank on top is the supply tank. It fills up slowly with a small pump and them dumps quickly into the grow beds. This process continues to maintain a "flood and drain" cycle in the grow beds (the half barrels).

The fish are in the buried tank only on this system. Some times fish will get in the supply/dump tank, but it is not a standard procedure.

Check out the video "Components of the "Five-Minute" Aquaponics System" on KZbin. It is a brief overview of the above system. Briefly stated, this system uses the waste matter produced by fish to provide food for plants growing in the grow beds. The water that transports the nutrient rich water to the plants is filtered and is returned to the fish in a clean and filtered manner. It's a symbiotic system benefitting both the fish and planets using approximately 10% the normal usage of water.

Am not sure why people go to extraordinary links to use 55 gallon Drums it would be faster more cost effective to build a 1’ tall by 4’ wide by 20’ long tank with liner. Save on fittings pipe and time in 4 days you could have build a system 5 or 6 times bigger and in less time.
@williamwagner5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the comments and I am sure you could improve on what we did, but being that we were in Honduras in a remote community (6,000 feet and 120 miles away from most resources needed for the build), we used the resources and time we have available to us. The 4 days were only half days due to the rainy season in which the build took place. You can view the system built in real time and other videos related to the build on my channel: kzbin.info/door/U290sQCYhwr8lZirAfXzgA. Thanks for you comments. What was the total length of this set Wondering if it will fit in my greenhouse
@williamwagner4 жыл бұрын
This set up is approx. 30 feet long and about 3 feet wide. This would include the fish tank. You could shorten the length by moving the fish tank alongside the grow beds, but that would increase the width of the system. You would need to give yourself some room on each end for maneuvering around the system so add an extra 2-3 feet on each end and the sides. I hope this answers your question. By the way, we have a real time video of this same video. It can be see on my channel at: kzbin.info/door/U290sQCYhwr8lZirAfXzgA. Khris, What one person would call small rocks another would say gravel. If you watch the other video we produced that is called A Real Time View of an Aquaponics System Build on KZbin we explain what to watch out for in choosing the media in the grow beds. An important factor is to make sure to test whatever you use in the grow bed. Depending on what you choose could end up being a problem for what you grow and the fish you have for some time to come. This is explained in the above mentioned video. We will be posting more videos related to aquaponics soon. @williamwagner7 жыл бұрын
The fish are essential for producing water containing fish excrement that when broken down will produce nitrates for the plants in the grow beds. After the water filters through the grow beds returns to the fish tank clean. In this system about a 45-50 minutes cycle. Fish tank to dump tank to grow bed to fish tank.

Thank you for your question and request. Is this system working. Yes! It was initially built in Yamaranguila, Intubica, Honduras, but has been relocated to La Esperanza, Intubica, Honduras. The current site is approx. 20 minutes away from the first. Currently, the system is waiting for a greenhouse to be finished, so it can be successfully running. While in its first location it was mainly growing lemon grass, but as was discovered the harsh rains and winds in the region changed the pH levels of the water and the winds would destroy any other crops being planted. The system was moved when the missionaries moved to the new location. Other aquaponics system builds have been very successful. Your second question and request can be fulfilled by going to the end of the real time video of this video. It can be viewed on my KZbin channel at: kzbin.info/door/U290sQCYhwr8lZirAfXzgA. Click on playlists, then click on the aquaponics tab. You will find several videos on aquaponics. Located the Real time build. What is price
@williamwagner4 жыл бұрын
This system was built in Honduras. The price was high due to costs there. The total cost was around $1,100 USD. It must be understood, prices in different countries will vary due to the accessibility of the items being purchased and if they are able to be purchased. Building the US may be less expensive depending on the price of the food grade IBC Tote and the 55 gallon food grade plastic drums.

This video only showed the building of the system by the missionary men and women from beginning to end. It's purpose was to show its construction in a time lapsed manner. There is a real time video of this build called Building an Aquaponics System in Real Time. This video takes you through the building of an aquaponics system from beginning to end. There were no scenes showing plants. Since then, the system has been deconstructed due to the missionaries moving due to their rent doubling. The system is awaiting a rebuild after COVID has ended the quarantine imposed on flights in and out of Honduras. A team of short term missionaries will be traveling in March 2021 if the quarantine is lifted.

Wow took 4 days with that many people?? I could have done it myself in a day or 2 minus the rocks..
@williamwagner5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it took us 4 days sort of. What you are missing is that each day were only half days due to the rain. The system was built during the rainy season in the mountain area of Honduras. When it rains, it rains hard and we get a light show added in with an occasional no electricity. Coupled with all this is traveling 7 plus miles on a 4 wheel drive road that took over an hour to get to the ponds where we netted the tilapia and then returned to place them into the water tank. A clearer picture of the build can be seen by viewing the Building an Aquaponics System in Real Time video There are several other video complimentary of this build on my channel at URL: kzbin.info/door/U290sQCYhwr8lZirAfXzgA.

This system has been a challenge since it was built. It has produced Lemon Grass and a few other grasses used for tea, but it ran into problems due to the harsh rains and winds in the mountains of Honduras during the winter months. The base gave way under erosion caused by the heavy rains. It was rebuilt and reinforced some 6-7 months after the build of the system. The harsh rains also gave problems with the water pH levels and the wind didn't allow for most plants to root well. The Lemon grass was hardy enough to deal with both elements. To address these issues a team of us went there to build a drainage system and greenhouse. This was successful, but the landlords of the property changed there plans and the missionaries needed to relocate some 20 minutes away. All the materials were of the system and greenhouse were disassembled and transported to their new home and property. I will be traveling to Honduras in late April to participate in the rebuilding of the system and greenhouse. A video of last year's build and conditions can be seen on a video called, "Team Honduras 2018" on KZbin. The URL is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iam3lGSDgNGMla8 Examples of systems Don has built can be seen on his website. The URL of his site is: upliftaquaponics.wixsite.com/upliftaquaponics.

Actually the system is still there. Due to the harsh rains and winds that Yamaranguila receives, there has been erosion under the system that has caused collapse of the system foundation. The foundation has been restored and since been rebuilt. This year a team of us is going to install a greenhouse around the system and install a drainage system on the grounds to prevent the erosion on the property. I am not sure why you think that something like this the object of people that don't care and want the worst for what was built for the purpose of aiding the community in the city of Yamaranguila, Intubica, Honduras.

why no filtration boi or mechanical at all ? System will fail.
@williamwagner6 жыл бұрын
The filtration is through the gravel (grow bed material). The water is pumped into the dump tank from the fish tank. Once the water reaches the U-Siphon it dumps into the grow beds. The water in the grow beds filters through the grow material and out the bottom drain. This filters the water clean and then returns to the fish tank. There are several other videos that describe the process. They can be found on the channel at: kzbin.info/door/U290sQCYhwr8lZirAfXzgA. The key is monitoring the PH levels and the Nitrite and Nitrate levels systematically. Adjustments to feeding the fish and amount of water can be altered to maintain appropriate levels. The system hasn't failed.
