A timeline of Tokitae's capture and the efforts to bring her home

Tokitae is the last surviving orca of the whales that were captured from Puget Sound and sold into captivity.
KING 5 was there when Tokitae was violently taken from her pod in August 1970 near Whidbey Island's Penn Cove. The people who collected the orcas for aquariums were using planes to spot them, and explosives to separate the adults from the young.
Several orcas died during the roundups.
Tokitae was sold to the Miami Seaquarium for about $20,000. She was believed to be just four years old.

The standards for animal cruelty have sure changed in my lifetime. And that is a good thing. No whales should live in captivity. They are intelligent mammals and deserve to live a free life.

What a cruel thing, to do that to a whale. I certainly hope the whale will atleast make it here to live out their life in Puget Sound waters. On a side note, last night I rode the M/V Tokitae ferry out of Mukilteo, and spotted orca whales in the water to the south of the route to Whidbey Island.
