I've started my minimalist journey this year. I knew Christmas was going to be a challenge because I have 30 years of accumulated decor. I brought down everything and only put out my favorites. It's very calming not having Christmas decor everywhere and in every room. I gave an extra tree to a friend and sold a bunch on marketplace for basically nothing just to get it out of the house. I was in Hobby Lobby today and people were in full blown Christmas mode filling their carts. I only bought two ornaments for gifts and felt so proud of myself.

After finding through the years it has been difficult for me to declutter Christmas decor in Dec with so much going on, I planned in Dec 2021 that in Sept 2022 I would declutter said Christmas decor. I worked on it for a few weeks and boxed up donations and put in my trunk right away. I did wait to donate until end of Oct when places start accepting Christmas decor but it was out of the house. Starting to decorate today and it is a joy and breeze to find everything in each designated bin and with the clutter and excess gone. Dawn has changed my life. I've been decluttering a downsized home for 4 years now and the peace is emerging!

Pre-lit Christmas tree lights usually stop working when the tree gets squished back into the box or bag. After decluttering we got a new pre-lit tree that we can put into the closet still standing. We take off the ornaments and throw a flat twin sheet over it. It has still been lighting for 7 years now.
@flynn1a2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I got a pre lit tree 13 years ago and the lights still work. (I hope I’m not jinxing it.). Like you, I just put it in a dry cleaning type bag, all decorated, down in the basement. (I’m way past children years, so I’m over tree decorating from scratch.)

I finally gave up on incandescent, but they are still my favorite. I switched to fairy lights on my tree. It is totally overloaded with about 1200 lights, but it's nice not to see thick wires, it's cheaper to run ⚡, and they all work on one remote. I've crushed them down in the tree for the past 3 years for storage now and have yet to blow a string. Would definitely recommend trying them out. I do have them zip tied and separated by section for easy assembly and tear down.

For me, when it comes to seasonal decor, LESS IS MORE. When a space is decorated to the hilt, not only is it a lot of work (hang, clean, store, etc.), it's also visually overwhelming -- which, for me, detracts from the enjoyment. Great house, lots of closets. But we each had a house full of furniture, kitchen supplies, you name it. So when we unpacked I stashed what wasn’t needed right then. But now I am caretaker to a huge, huge inventory! We did both cull a lot before the move, but it wasn’t enough. And now there are things I know we have, but I have no idea where I put them! I am a “ladybug” type, so having the rooms look serene and uncluttered is important to me. But now I’m aware of how much stress all this extra STUFF causes me. I have a lot of work to do, but I can do it. I want my closets and drawers to look serene and uncluttered too!! Thank you.

I am not a minimalist. What I do is to put away any daily ornaments and replace it with Christmas ornaments. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. My bedroom is normally decorated in teals and aqua shades. I didn't want the regular reds and greens in there. So last year, I went to resale shops and looked for table-top decorations that I liked that had whites, blues and creams. This way when I wake up, I don't feel that this room loses the quieter feel that I established.

I will definitely set my container limit this year though 🙂 I agree about the pops of red! I generally keep my decor (including Christmas) fairly neutral but then it found like I needed a lot of decor go make my shelves look Christmasey. This year I have added a few pops of red even just with Berry sprigs and it has made a big difference to the vibe 🙂

I was sooooooo excited to hear how much money you have raised for the well. And, thank you for letting me be part of making this happen for the women in need at Dorothy's place. I just printed the bunt cake cookbook. It's AWESOME, Dawn! I was glad to see that these cakes can be made gluten free since my son's wife has gluten issues. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Dawn, isn’t it wonderful that after decluttering you hardly ever lose anything? I am sure you will probably find your grandmother’s tablecloth mixed in with something else red😊

I love that you’re raising money for a well for Dorothy’s House. Every year at Christmas I purchase a share of a deep well through World Vision. Clean water is so important and needed.

I think the one holiday that needs a 'minimalism break' is Christmas. Sure, I get stressed when decorating! But we all LOVE the results. My kids are teens and if I pared down to your level, I'd hear about it. (Each bed gett a holiday pillow and it makes us all very happy.)

Def in the red right now. My mom passed away and I took all her decor or my dad would have taken it to goodwill…. But now I’m in the middle of figuring out what works for my house and what I actually like. Thanks for this video. ♥️ I feel like social media pushes more more more decor and it gets so overwhelming!

I love the way it looks! I am in the green-ish area for my decorations (major declutter with you last season). Won't be decorating this year though, as (long) travel is planned over the holidays. (Enjoying your decorations and next year here will be so special!) So, great to see you and your family (lovely Maggie and sneaky Corbin and Tom w/ air compressor sink the win)! Please let us know where the red tablecloth is... Thanks! :D

Such an awesome deed Dawn knowing how you are contributing towards Dorothy's goals. Its such a great idea and your book looks so fun. I wish i could get one myself but i live in Malaysia and it would b too expensive but this not about me. I enjoy watching your channel and so happy that Tom solved you sink problem. Lastly, your christmas deco turned out beautiful. Say a prayer to St. ANTHONY and im sure youll find your grandma's tablecloth.

I am stuck in the house because of a winter storm. We already have five feet and it’s not over yet. So I am doing some decluttering. I got rid of two trash bags worth of donations. Now I love to decorate so I still have 9 bins. But I got it down to 8. But that’s inside and out and I decorate every room. Getting excited to keep going though and clear out my basement. Enjoy the day. ❄️

I used draino for year and clogs always came back until a spend the $10 on the zep for clogged drains and it worked so much better and you need only half the tiny bottle. It’s incredible.

The lights on our 15 year old pre-lit tree are now seriously dim, if they light up at all. I really like the shape of my tree, so I just put extra lights on it.

I decorated early this year because I’m having surgery next week. I downsized my decor quite a bit last year, but still have 4 totes, plus tree decor. I love putting evergreen garlands up, but they do take a lot of room to store, as do wreaths. I also love trees of various sizes and materials, which also take a bunch of room, but it felt good this year. I did what your mom suggested and took pictures last year, so no debating over what goes where. We purchase a tree ornament each year, representing something from the year, so after 41 years of marriage, there are many, but we enjoy having them on the tree and reminiscing over past years. At this point in my life, I do have more time so it’s enjoyable and not a chore. I’m pretty minimal with most things, decluttering regularly, but decor. 🥰

Hi, I have followed you for a few years now. Got rid of 50% of our belongings. Yep! Six months ago I went through all the xmas decorations. And decided to give away the tree (we used it for 10 years and twinkle lights still working and then shipped it together with decorations to the Philippines to a family without a tree. They have had it up since September and all the people in the street just love it. I then found another family who did not have a tree last year in my neighborhood so I gave them one of our smaller trees with decorations for them to decorate. So what did we do. We had a family meeting and decided to order a new one off Amazon with new decorations. We simplified it to a more adult decore. We are out of the kiddy season. We plan to have it up and my eldest daughter has invited her adult friends for drinks and eats. And yes doing a xmas date dunbt cake (everyone loves it). , charcuterie boards etc. Move with the seasons of life.

When our sinks get backed up, I always use the wet dry vac and it sucks out what's creating the clog. It is almost always the bathroom sink that gets clogged. Hair and gunk are usually the culprits. We need to purchase one of those air compressors. Because we have four house cats, are adopting two rescue dogs (making it a total of three dogs in our home) and we are still trying to declutter the house, we are not planning on decorating. Last year we mostly stayed focused on the True meaning of Christmas without the decorations. We had each other, the Lord and our home and furbabies. It was one of the best Christmases ever.

All my pre-lit trees are still working I’ve had them for 16 years. I got them at Home Depot Black Friday special. They have them every year. Declutter Christmas decorations a few years back and I put out exactly what I have. The house is festive and everyone enjoys it. 🌲 ❤

I was a bit overwhelmed this year thinking of how much help I need to do everything so I simplified as I unpacked. I have almost no decor peices around the house but each bedroom has a skinny tree, I have a garland, wreath and our Christmas tree in the living area and it's a very small living area so it feels very festive without clutter :) I love reading the comments, it's a great group!

Wow, that air compressor trick was brilliant! It really does make sense because that's basically what a plunger does, dislodges a clog using pressure, either air or water.

I realized last year after listening to you that my Christmas decorations stressed me way out! I hadn't picked up on the fact that all the constant red around the house causes anxiety. That sounds crazy but I removed 95% of the red last year and I felt soooo much better! I do a tree, my mantle and table and that's it. I used to put off decorating until mid December because every room was decorated and there were so many bins of it. It took days to get it up. Last year was great!

I like to go with a festive, wintry decor without the traditional red and green, so Christmas decorating is more of a smooth transition and isn’t different from my minimalist home decor colors. (Black, white, gray, natural and stained woods.)

Great video! Also a really good example of the "Junebugging" technique, jumping back and forth from a main task (decorating) to a secondary task (unclogging the drain). I love this technique for getting stuff done and not getting too distracted by the secondary task or too overwhelmed by the primary one. Your house is so cute, and so much decorating/decluttering inspiration here. And a great secondary use for my husband's tire inflator! I had no idea.

I got rid of all of my Christmas decorations last year except a string of outdoor lights and a light up garland. I was a Christmas fanatic and had bins and bins of stuff. Feels kind of weird..I still have that anxious feeling of I should be decorating🤔
