I really love the concept here! Their facility is so inviting and comfortable with warm touches, very much unlike traditional funeral homes. I like the idea of being able to see a loved one through the entire process this way. I would think a person’s sense of closure would be so much easier to attain by actually witnessing or just being there with the family. Great video as usual Kari!

Wow! I'm very impressed. I've seen some videos online that were downright scary and the people running the retorts were very disrespectful. Merry Christmas!

This is similar to the crematory I worked at in VA. It was a super small facility with only two retorts and one of them was so old the doors were hand operated. It, and our partnering funeral home are all getting upgrades next spring.

It's good to see FH's are changing to the needs of families. In the 70's, cremations were unheard of & comprised of approx. 20% of dispositions in the U.S., but was more popular in coastal states, particularly on the West Coast. With cremation embraced by most religions, there will be more service options provided with several price points.

Thanks for sharing this video ! I’m glad to see cremation in a more gentle dignified way . At times , family members feel like they have to go every step of the way to the very end with their loved one . I’m glad to see those that who choose this can be there until the very last step and be comfortable , be reassured their loved one is in the best care and being treated with dignity . The older crematories seem barbaric in some people’s minds making the process that much more difficult to bare . Once again thank you and thank you Steve for this video !

Funeral homes invest a lot of money installing these systems. When Mom passed in '12 I was able to be there for the entire process ( here in SC ) until her remains were placed in the retort. the home spent over $600K earlier in 2012 on their upgraded system that is nearly identical to what you showed here ( that amount was verified indirectly for me later by someone I know who was involved in the install). The performance of that thing is amazing. It is designed to eliminate (as far as possible with the best engineering) co-mingling of cremains. I was HUGELY impressed and satisfied with everything. I know Mom would have been as well. 😌

A bright, welcoming environment is so important. There used to be a moment when the coffin just disappeared behind curtains. I felt that was cold. I'm used to family funerals when the coffin is lowered into grave. Somehow, I found that comforting. It's nice that family can accompany the coffin to the crematorium, although I wouldn't want to watch the burning of the body.

Cremulator truly sounds better then pulverizer, over heard it called that. Also over time the cremation remains change. Example when you first pick up your loved one and you take a peek at the cremated remains you may see the bones are really white and bigger pieces. The yrs later you look again the bones are a lot more fine

My sister and I participated in my dad's cremation. It really helped us process our grief in a way we didn't when our mom passed a year earlier as my dad made all of the arrangements. The funeral home went over and above for us. My dad as a minister and had done many services there. I am hoping for an outdoor cremation in Crestone, CO for myself. It's so nice to live in CO where such a cremation is possible.

When I build my new custom home I’m planning on having a retort built into the garage. My reasoning is I would like to die and be cremated without leaving home. My friends and family dig the idea however the local zoning department is giving me backlash. Daisy Hill Crematorium needs to make cookies in the shape of a retort as well. That would be cool!

Thank you for doing this new video about cremation. I love the look of the place and this was very informative . The only thing I have to say is that I do not like the fire cremation, we prefer the aquamation process. I feel it is much more environmentally friendly. Is there any possibility to do an updated video on the aquamation process? I plan on even having my pets cremated via aquamation. Thank you both for taking the time to explain the process and making it a lot less difficult to sleep knowing our family member is treated with respect. May you both have a very Merry and Blessed Holiday. God Bless…..my prayers to all who are missing someone this season….. I love you and miss you Daddy and Mom. 🙏🏼🦋🎄

First of all, I feel that you, Kari, could complete this whole video by yourself. Next, I've seen videos, where the whole process is much more lavish. The cremation is done with colorful curtains and drapes. The family gets to see the body being inserted in the cremator. A very family affair. And what about Aqua cremation. It seems so much better, mentally. One way, the body gets burned up. The other way, the body is in a water and a biodegradable solution. It's nice to see that the process of making death, final for the family and friends. The process of decomposition is speed up quicker. Thanks for the video.

That is an exquisite facility. Do they do "ID views" there for families and I wonder if families are allowed to bring in members of clergy at the time of cremation for a "service"? Last thing I wonder is if this facility also doubles as a direct disposer or if that's even a thing in Michigan? Great video! Merry Christmas 🎅
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they can do all of that. What do you mean by that?
@stevenkeckeissen2369
@stevenkeckeissen2369 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Yes, we do ID views in our witnessing room. This is another reason that we have a shade on the witness window. This allows immediate family only to verify the identity of their loved one prior to cremation. They may also view the identification tag so they know their permanent cremation number that is cremated with the body and used later to identify the cremated remains. In Michigan, crematories cannot be direct depositors. The deceased individual must go through a licensed funeral home prior to cremation to fill out cremation authorization paperwork. Several forms including a cremation authorization signed by the family and a cremation permit and a death certificate must be signed my a doctor or medical examiner and the funeral director before cremation takes place.
@lrmgrl

Direct cremation, as in cremation within a matter of hours or days, is not allowed anywhere in the United States of America! This is because an automatic coroner's/medical examiner's hold is automatic. This hold could range from days to weeks,possibly even months to give the coroner/medical examiner's office sufficient time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the individual's death. Only then, can cremation legally be performed!

Are there certain bones that will always need to be broken down after cremation or it depends on the person. Has there been an instance when the skull didn't break down during cremation?
@stevenkeckeissen2369
@stevenkeckeissen2369 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. The cremation process reduces the body down to the bone structure. After the cremation process, some bones are recognizable but they are so brittle that they will break under even light pressure. Large bones such as leg and arm bones may still appear in shape. Cranial bones are often flat and dense and require a little more pressure to be reduced therefore after the cremated remains have cooled, they are placed in the processor or cremulator which has an apparatus that reduces these pieces to a sand/gravel/powder type of result. The apparatus is also designed to filter out any inorganic material such as small metals. The large metal implants are removed prior to processing because they are easier to see, yet some metals such as dental fillings are separated in the processor.

An Idea! If the retort can be started via phone as stated in the video, then Skype could be used to hold services for those loved ones far away and they could use an online button to start the process. Given the new day issues with travel, it might be something to consider to expand services. Great job in presenting the death side of life.

That is a good idea. As every family we serve is different, we are always exploring ways to allow families to be involved in the process and find comfort in knowing that the cremated remains that were given to them are indeed their loved family member.

Reference the TV monitor, I was passing a crematory in Asheville NC that has a grease fire in the exhaust stack. Looked like a rocket motor. Wasn't long before the Fire Department showed up.

My father, 30yrs ago, thought creamation is the way to go because burying takes up so much land that has better uses. Both parents were creamated. One facility was moderate in comfort, but we didn't stay,the other, was a large room, a few seats, located in an industrial center. Not much pleasing. Arranged by a younger brother. Then he took off from work to take the remains without telling the rest of us. We all knew the final wishes he ignored. A place like this would be much better to ensure we all got a portion of the remains each, instead of both parents remains at his home.

After the body has come out of the Retort and it's is cool can the family then ask to get thier love one as is with everything that came out of the retort and nothing removed or pulverized ??? Or dose the metal have to be removed & pulverized?
@KaritheMortician
@KaritheMortician 2 жыл бұрын
No, most states have laws against it unless it is for religious purposes
@stevenkeckeissen2369
@stevenkeckeissen2369 2 жыл бұрын
Metal is usually removed unless the family signs a waiver for it to remain, if so, we do still remove the metals but separate them and place them in a different container to return the family. If the family requests that the cremated remains not be pulverized, it does depend on the State laws; if the State allows cremated remains to be released to a family unpulverized, they must sign a waiver and the cremated remains will be released as they were prior to pulverization. This is often requested for religious rights and ceremonies or for identification purposes.

Does the family get to keep anything that’s removed for cremation like false heart valves , artificial joints , pain pumps etc… ?

@terrijones8127 2 жыл бұрын

@stevenkeckeissen2369

If the family requests these items back, we have them sign a waiver that they understand they are requesting the inorganic material to be returned. This waiver protects both parties interest so they are not surprised to find these items when they receive the cremated remains. It also serves as a note to the crematory that the family requests the items. We of course must explain that it’s very possible that the cremation may eliminate parts of these items as a whole or partially. It all depends on what the material is made of. We find that these requests are often a comfort to a family as a form of identification.
@stevenkeckeissen2369
@stevenkeckeissen2369 2 жыл бұрын
@@terrijones8127 that’s a good point. If an autopsy is performed, or anatomical donation takes place, these items may be removed then but not everyone goes through an autopsy though. Artificial joints or other metallic body apparatus are rarely removed during an autopsy.

I’m curious how the retorts are cleaned in between cremations to prevent any small pieces of remains getting mixed in with others. Also, is it just the person and what they’re wearing that goes in the chamber or are in the in a box or container of sorts that gets mixed in with their remains?

I have an odd question,but having lots of sisters & women in my family that love Good smells,can they add fragrance to the body? Let say they family wants to go outside and smell burning embers of Amber as Moms vapors ascend into the heavens. 💁🏼‍♂️. Vielen Dank. (Many Thanks)

I don't think the neighbors want to smell your mom; and the aromatic vapors probably would be destroyed in the burning process.
