I admire that you have so much national tradition with knitting and design. In Canada we don’t have our own, we just have what we steal from our immigrant grandparents. Irish arans, faire isle from Scotland, Norwegian, Icelandic, etc. The closest thing would be the maple leaf knitwear they design for each Winter Olympic Games.

When you were reviewing the swatches I was excited to envision one of the longer swatches as a leg warmer. These are a tube of warmth that dancers, athletes, and those who need extra warmth on their calves use to protect the muscles in colder weather. I've needed "ankle warmers" for years to get through the winter without injury and made myself tubes of polar fleece - so easy to cut a short rectangle and stitch one seam and slip on. But when I saw your swatches and how beautiful the designs were I was thrilled to imagine knitting 'warmers' with a lot more style. Thank you for the inspiration.

I enjoyed making leg warmers for my mother when I moved in with her to give companionship and care during the last years of her life. I used merino wool from a farm in Pennsylvania USA to knit a basic pattern of stockinette warmers. The first pair I made was too small for her, but they were a perfect fit as arm warmers from elbow to wrist.

For the floats you can sew across them from the inside of the garment. Use a similar colour. This also makes the fabric stronger. The blue & white sweater is just gorgeous. Watching this video reminded me of my Mother. I have two Norwegian jackets or cardigans that were her's. The older one must be some time between the 1960s and 1980s, the newer one was bought in 1997. My sister and sister-in-law also inherited one each. The UK moths got to my 1997 one, but luckily not in too many places so I was able to repair it.

i've had problems with moth too, some knitted garments and also balls of yarn were destroyed. However what was in this type of plastic boxes, that have clips, remained untouched. Also it's good to remember that moth lay their eggs only during the summer months so one doesn't need to worry about moth during the entire year!

I love your swatch collection. Just seeing it is a good lesson in their value. I also loved those vintage sweaters...the one with the narrow waist and the mystery one that switched directions....maybe one person did the top and another the bottom and then they had to figure out how to put it together? So here´s my take on the sweater with the upside-down stitching. The sweater was worn by a young woman when she fell in love with the love of her life. He loved her in that sweater. He died tragically at sea and she took the bottom half of the sweater apart and knit it purposely with upside-down stitches, a reflection of her broken heart. I´m kidding, of course, but I´ve just discovered your channel and I had a lot of fun thinking this up. FYI I´m a beginner knitter and am working on my first pair of socks.

I wonder if the front of the mystery sweater was irrevocably torn or stained, so a clever knitter cut off the beautifully knitted color work top and picked up and reknitted the body downwards?

My favorite sweater is Arnes sweater knit when he was younger. You must recreate this one! I want to knit it. I imagine this sweater has a story to tell. The mystery sweater was possibly a UFO started by one person top down and finished by someone else bottom up?!

I really enjoy it when you review your vintage knitwear piece! I recently started a pattern where the designer had you start at the colorwork yoke section with a provisional cast on - then knit the top, go back, pick up the stitches from the provisional cast on and work the bottom down. I changed how I did that particular sweater, but it reminded me of your sweater. I think the garden sweater that Arne is repairing was done on a knitting machine, hence the long floats.
@ARNECARLOS5 жыл бұрын
Yes, maybe that is what happened.

You both are such treasures - thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I look forward to your videos every Sunday! Off topic but I started Bokashi system to replenish the soil for next spring. It works very well. I personally would love to have a pattern for Arne’s sweater he made when in the mountains - just like it is. Charge what you want for the pattern and I will pay!! I love the 2 sweaters you bought at the vintage place. It seems I like the neutrals better in sweaters than a lot of color and I am one that loves color. I am thinking of making your Save the Children sweater with an orange gradient I have for the design as it makes me think of flames in a hearth and maybe the same neutral solid for top and bottom - will have to swatch. Love to you both!!

I love your vintage collection vids! Thankyou 😄. The mystery sweater, could be the wearer needed the bottom to be more snug?, or the new puppy found it delicious.......hehehe, or it wore out. The fronts always wear out faster. But I think since the entire body down was knit, that the sweater was either to tight or too loose. So it was reknit. It also makes me think it could have been a child’s sweater that was reknit to fit a young woman. Perhaps a girl revamped a Favorite sweater to fit her again. It is fun to wonder. Still, it was well done, even if unside down. I would have knit bottom up, and then grafted the shoulders to the body. 😁

Really enjoyed this episode. A theory; the upside down sweater is a mash up of two damaged sweaters. A close match but not exact. Older garments certainly were not easily tossed. Could a part of the sleeves have been added later as well to get the match with the top?

Very interesting to see your vintage sweaters. Arne, you mentioned you were a kid when you made the navy and white sweater - what age do you think you were? My theory on the sweater with the upside down stitches is that someone took it off outside and forgot about it and their dogs got ahold of it and used it as a tug of war toy and damaged it so badly that much of it had to be reworked to repair it! Maybe!?! Haha.

I think the cardigan was made like Skeindeer sometimes does - the yoke first and the body later. Maybe by two generations, a younger learner doing the lower body for practice, a more experienced knitter doing the yoke... I also think it could be from the 1930s when there was a trend for „peasant“ costume/dirndl style with short decorative cardigans in Alpine or Scandinavian style with fuller dirndl skirts...
