The reasons the town is "crowded in" is that it's a mountain town with not much usable flat land, and it was built at a time when most people didn't have cars. When you mostly walk to get where you're going, you mostly build things close together.

Yes, it is a matter of what I call "poetic" way some people look and dream of these places, completely turning the blind eye to the fact that there is a reason why people leave these places. I like these places, but only to an explorer level, yes they are beautiful. Will I settle in a place like this? Maybe. I even came up with my own joke, "One of these days I am gonna leave the city, take a couple thousand $$$ with me and buy a house (for a couple thousand bucks) in an abandoned coal mine somewhere in WV and stay there till my last day"

I was born and raised in WV, will be raising my children here also. As far as I know, without the assistance of an ancestry searching service, my ancestry has been here for generations on both sides. I don't know any relatives of either my father or mother that came from anywhere but West Virginia. My grandfather was well known in these parts for his fiddle playing back in the day. Growing up in this small little place was something that as a younger person I thought a trouble and was mesmerized by the thought of big cities and fast internet, but after I had kids and even the small town scared me for them, I am so thankful to be in WV and not to have been accustomed to big city living. Now I do not think I could endure a big city life. My husband's family are from California and Maryland, but he has fierce West Virginia pride. Hopefully our kids will too. I love our state!

Really you wouldn’t want to live there. I’m from West Virginia and worked as an inspector for Department of Agriculture for 10 years back in the 80s and 90s. It was dead then and REALLY out in the middle of nowhere. The drug problems in Logan and Mingo counties are terrible, there are no longer any jobs, and the flooding is an ongoing issue. My grandparents lived there many years and we visited often. Dr. Harold and Henrietta VanHoose started the well baby clinic at Man Hospital (the one you passed). His office was on Main Street on the left at the end of the video. There was not a pharmacy. He dispensed medications. He delivered many babies in people's homes. They had a lovely brick home built on McDonald Ave. I recall two times the Guyandot River flooded their house. When the Pittston Coal Company dam broke in 1971 and caused horrible damage and death, my grandparents assisted. They moved to Florida later in the 1970s.

WV is a coal mining state. Most people here relied on those jobs in the mines in order to feed their families. Now, guess how poor they were. WV poor people built the wealth of many by the sweat and blood of many by just trying to survive. Now guess who made fun of them. Rich, ignorant, snobby people who carried tall tales to their rich friends, who in turn spread them wherever they went. This worked for them in 2 ways, 1- it helped inflate their self-importance and 2- it kept others out of their way. Because who would want to be around dirty, uneducated poor people when rhey had the choice of bigger cities and so-forth?! As a life-long hillbilly whose ancestors were coal miners and farmers, road builders and war veterans, I can tell u that we are proud of who we are! No matter what they say about us!!

I would not want the big city types here in any case. They'd never be able to adapt. They'd bring their big city ideas and problems to a place that would never tolerate that nonsense. We have our share of problems and idiots, just like anywhere else certainly has. But we're small towns and neighborhoods. We're spread out, plenty of mountains, peacefully quiet mostly, and easy privacy when you want it. Friends and neighbors when you want or have a need. We take care of our own when needed. Welcoming to friendly visitors. Belligerent outsiders stand out and end up finding reasons to not stay for long. State motto: Montani Semper Liberi (Mountaineers Always Free)...

There was a lady who had written a song about that flood that we met at a restaurant one time while we were there… I think her name was Jean Crowdy and I don’t know how I remember that but I hope someone corrects me if I’m wrong. Sure some of the towns are rundown pretty bad but there is some nice property to be had at a very reasonable price. If you're looking to retire or are an entrepreneur, you would love it here. Southern West Virginia is very rugged country. I live in McDowell county. Go to either Kanawa county or Monogalia county. Morgantown in Monogalia is a college town with nice scenery. The capital city Charleston in Kanawa has more to do but not much W.V. feel to it. More like a tourist city.

My momma's best friend was from Logan, WV. Her name was Alberta Bell, and she was the sweetest lady you'd ever meet. She would take forever telling you a story, though! Lol I miss her, gone for a long, long time.

I just found this site and I absolutely love this video. I was in nursing school a senior in nursing school at Harlan arh School of Professional nursing the year the Buffalo Creek happened there were twelve of us there at Beckley West Virginia doing our OB rotation. Absolutely have never seen anything like it then or now I would love to see a video or a documentary or whatever on Buffalo Creek because I was there and all of us nursing students were sent to work 8n out post clinics that were set up, we did drive up through Buffalo Creek and I honestly I don't think anybody could ever describe what that Devastation was unless they were there and I do remember that we weren't even able to get home for the weekend because the interstate was even flooded in Parts at that time but I have a great respect for that area and for those blessed mountain people and I have a lot of good friends that are from there my grandfather was actually born Matewan, but thank you so much for sharing this God bless and be safe.

In my work in the late nineties, I called on Ellis Lumber and building supplies just up the road in Accoville. No finer person than John Ellis and the nice folks that worked at Ellis Lumber.

Man, West Virginia, for those who may not know, is a town in far southern West Virginia near the border of Virginia. It is scenic country. The notion that all West Virginians are "hillbillies" is false, one of those myths they feed the tourists. Of course, some rural Appalachian counties are poor in comparison with the rest of the urbanized nation, and the rugged mountains and remote locations make it a hard place to earn a living. The promising young people tend to move out of the mountains to find opportunities for their talents, but the love of the mountains always remains with them. If you grow up in the mountains anywhere, you learn to be tough, resilient, adaptable, and hard-working early in life, and that's true of West Virginians. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania, worked for a few years in Huntington, Morgantown, and Beckley, and drove up and down Rt. 219 from Lewisburg through Grafton and Davis to the Maryland line. I know the state fairly well. I dated several West Virginia girls back in the day and can attest they were all lovely, genuine and intelligent. I am very fond of the State and its people. If you want to see "the real America," this is the place to go.

If I visited the USA alone I would go for such a place rather than the typical tourist traps in Florida.

We spent our 2 week family vacation this past summer in and around the Monongahela National Forest. Beautiful state. Can not get over the amount of abandoned farms and homesteads. What happened?

West Virginia used to be one of the top coal suppliers in the entire country, until the advent of natural gas usage gradually replaced the need for coal power; West Virginia was already quite tough for farming with much of the state being covered in dense forests and mountains, and many farmers preferred the wide open space of the Midwest and other areas of the United States. By the end of WWII, a lot of farmers moved out of the state because the industries made large areas increasingly harder to farm. Also, before interstates and major highways, driving down rural roads meant that you had to pass through small towns no matter where you were going, so when the interstates were constructed, small towns were bypassed because cars would now drive directly from city A to city B without having to stop at dozens of tiny stops along the way

After 50 years I still can't help thinking man I am so glad I left WV when I did in the 1980s. Great people. Great outdoors. 25% of the state is owned by out-of-state interests and it showed back then, still shows now.

For a 'half dead' town; Man looks 'too good'. I'm from the Wash DC area and, thinking back on it, the whole area had a dingy/sooty ambience. Man, OTOH, 'sparkles' like a town here in the 'greener' parts of California/Arizona.
