I used to be a volunteer steam loco driver and firemen at Museum of Science & Industry railway in Manchester, which is sadly no more. These days I'm a volunteer signalman on the Churnet Valley Railway in Staffordshire. The red signal levers are for home signals (which signal a train to pass the signal or not), yellow ones for distant signals (which tells the driver the status of the next home signal, to give him warning if he'll need to stop at it. there are none of those in the 'box at Chinnor). Black ones change the points, and blue ones are the Facing Point Lock levers (these physically lock the points preventing inadvertent changing of the points while a train is on them, which would obviously lead to an accident). There are track circuits which detect whether a train is present in that track circuit's 'section' or not. These drive indicators for the signalman to see, and also feed into the electrical interlocking to prevent a train being signalled into a section where another train is present. All points, signals, and track circuits are mechanically and electrically interlocked with each other to prevent the signalman mistakenly setting conflicting routes. I love working the 'box! The steam loco BTW is a Great Western 'Small Prairie' built in Swindon in 1924. Vince

@@TheMissendenFlyer Railways have been a life-long interest, Andy. I was never a train spotter (they collect loco numbers in a book) but always fascinated by the technology and the social aspects of rail - how they transformed society by linking places and allowing travel for everyone. You didn't have to woo and marry a girl from your own village any more, which improved the gene pool, for instance! Aviation made railways take a back seat when I started flying in the '70s, but never went away entirely. Now in retirement it's back to being a major interest of never ending fascination. I think you must have had a deprived childhood - presumably your parents never bought you a train set! 😁 Vince

Entertaining vid as ever. Shame about the cafe but otherwise looked a good day out with the lads. As for the engine debate on twins & fours, twins have more character, especially at low/legal speeds, but four's are more exciting when you wind them up imo. Although that's getting much harder these days. I personally own a twin currently but have had had a couple of fours & a single before too. However, my first preference would be a twin now I think. I also really like the strong engine braking which you can use like a light break. They just suit my riding style better & they're always fun & characterful imo.

I think your friend Dan has good taste, and I loved Geoff's quip "Do you know who I used to be?" 🙂 Having recently aquired a Z900RS and ridden it a lot, I find it's a brilliant contrast to my V twin Guzzi. We don't want every bike to be a 270-degree twin... I think the Z makes some fantastic noises in stock trim. My 3 word summary of the Z is: Fast, Economical, Fun. I live in Bristol & am wondering exactly where your next outing will be (I can't think of where you mean off the top of my head)... Anyway, if you have time, I would recommend riding to the harbourside for a tea/coffee before going home. There is a dedicated motorcycle free parking bay opposite Brunel's Buttery (an outdoor cafe) & ample opportunity to carry on with the industrial heritage theme. Close by is the steam Fairbairn crane + the John King & Mayflower tug boats. Depending on which day you arrive, there can be steam engines running along what is left of the dockside railway. I'm sure you would all enjoy it.

Fair point, non the less a twin is a perfect measure in cylinders that should be on a bike. I do like singles also, but 3 or 4 cylinder bikes, even though I did own them I never felt connected to as much as a twin. For me, I would never buy a triple or 4 cylinder bike again. Use to have BMW R9T, sold it and hopefully this summer I plan to buy R1300GS Trophy version with all the trim possible. Twin cylinder bike is always the way to go, parallel twin like the Triumph or RE Interceptor, awesome. My personal favourite, boxer twin. 😊
@chrishart8548
@chrishart8548 Ай бұрын
A four cylinder needs to be high horsepower to make any sense. A single needs to make low horsepower to make any sense. A twin is usually more horsepower than a single and more torque than a four.

When riders discover the talents/capabilities of their bikes and ride the bike accordingly the character of the bike is revealed. Pushing the Z900RS SE a bit through the rpm range reveals a entirely different character and delight. I think what throws most riders off on the Kawasaki is how docile it will happily operate at lower rpms and unlike some bikes like the Speed Triple the Kawasaki doesn’t beg you to ride it hard through gears. Kind like your mate James Bond a gentleman in a suite until you get cross ways with him.

@@TheMissendenFlyer The Little General. It was the one that took President Lincoln home to Springfield IL after his assasination nearly a hundred years before. I took it a quarter mile through the railroad yard. It was a great experience. Not to happen since. Back in 1990's I took the steam train from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and back. It was taken out of service then and replaced by a diesel. I had got to do some wonderful amaxing things in my life. John Britten was a friend and Steve Earl. Among others

It's one of the best scrams on your channel - the trains are just so interesting. The riding at the end was excellent, too.

Loving these videos Andy as I can't get out myself due to breaking my wrist coming off my bike on a roundabout while sliding through an oil slick. I didn't realise just how quickly you hit the deck with oil or diesel on the road surface. Carry on scramming!

My dad took me to lots of steam train railways Bluebell Railway, Didcot, York museum, Victoria Train station to see the Orient express and I can't forget the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway in Kent which as a child I absolutely loved. Steam trains and bikes go very well hand in hand.
