A Tribue to Michael Angelis

I'm an American so one would think I wouldn't know about Michael Angelis, but I remember getting the New Friends for Thomas video as a kid and watching it for the first time. Immediately, the loud English accent was quite jarring when I was expecting Baldwin but when I got to the end of the DVD, I quite liked him. And I was confused as to why I never saw him again. That is, until I started watching Thomas on KZbin many years later and realized that the UK had a different dub. Michael had huge shoes to fill after Ringo, but he managed to surpass them in my opinion. Here's a tribute to the longest narrator of Thomas and Friends after learning about his passing.

Michael Angelis' voice was a huge part of my childhood because i loved listening to it in TTTE (I really didnt like the US one when I discovered it when going on YT). May he rest in peace. I know Smith was never narrator for the US version of the TV series (thank God), his read along narrations for the US DVDs are just shit. Most of them sound like he is not even trying because of how cringingly monotone he is.

Ever since I came to the Thomas community 12 years after I was born, living in USA, I highly liked Michael Angelis as the narrator since I started watching the model series after Ringo Starr (acted as narrator for S1 and S2). 2020 was truly a sad time for Thomas the tank engine community when this happened. Michael Angelis was my favourite narrator. The voices he gave to each character felt like how they would talk if trains really did have faces. And he always put the right emotion into the scene. Along with Michael Brandon. He didn't overdo it like Alac Baldwin who always sounded like he looking for an Oscar. Nor was he too soft like George Carlin and especially Ringo Starr. As an American, I didn't grow up with Angelis, but when I discovered him on KZbin, I was amazed at how enthusiastic his narration was. He gave his all in every episode, and you can really tell how much fun he was having. He will be missed by everyone in the Thomas fanbase.

Yesterday, I watched the "New Friends For Thomas" DVD in Angelis' honor, as that was the one DVD he narrated for US audiences (it was after Alec Baldwin was fired but before Michael Brandon was hired). R.I.P. Michael Angelis (January 18, 1952 - May 30, 2020). He's now in TTTE heaven with George Carlin, David Mitton, Ben Forster, John Hurt, and the Rev W. Awdry himself.

I don’t think Baldwin was fired. I read somewhere he left to do that awful Cat in the Hat Movie. But I had that DVD too and I wish they used him for the entirety of Season 7 in the US. Brandon was alright but the music change really ruins it.

I'm italian there wasn't any TV channel that put on Thomas and Friends, so my mother downloaded episodes of the series in the UK version, and hearing the narrator made me always happy, I learned a good part of my english with this cartoon, and all the episodes were with him as the narrator, obviously I haven't been seeing the series for a long time, but sometimes I spend a few minutes watching some episodes I used to watch, when I heard about his death, I realized the big role he had in my childhood. He'll be missed by many, others won't remember, but he certainly will be honored by anyone who loves the series. RIP Michael Angelis

Michael Angelis’ narrations of Toad Stands By and Thomas and The Jet Engine helped them become some of my favorites. I grew up with George Carlin’s, but I liked Michael Angelis just as much. Growing up in the 2000s, the only Thomas narrators I knew were Ringo, Baldwin, George, and Michael Brandon. It wasn’t until I discovered that my grandparents had kept a dvd by the name of New Friends for Thomas and Other Adventures was I immediately introduced to Michael Angelis. I’ll admit, I didn’t like him at first, but when I found a VHS tape with his dub and multiple episodes of him dubbed on KZbin, I realized that he’s been making waves in the UK Thomas dub for a long time. My respect grew for him overtime, and his work will forever last as some of the best work in T&F’s showtime history
