I have started watching Dark Shadows after 50 years after it was made, I was 5 yrs old. And in the later 70's I saw some of it. Just not like I am watching it from 1966-1971. I love this soap... R.I.P Jonathan Frid. So sad to had never seen you until now... :(

Pity he's never married but continues to maintain his own website at age 87. Fantastic actor...Wonderful man. I wish they'd bring back the old Dark Shadows. I miss that series...and Barnabas, easily my favorite vampire.

It's not a pitty. Not everyone wants marriage nor to have kids. Mr. Frid happened to have been a Gay man behind the scenes but closeted back in the day . He could have been legally fired from his job early on had the censors found out he was gay. He, Frid also did not have any interest in adopting any kids like his brother did.

Really enjoyed this, thank-you for taking the time to compile all of the photos. I was one of thousands who had to run home every day from school to watch "my" show. I liked all of the characters, but of course loved Barnabas. I still have my "Dark Shadows" scrapbook that I put together from magazine photos and articles of the time. It was a sad day indeed when the show ended, and sadder still to hear that life has ended for Jonathan Frid as well. What a trip down Memory Lane for me!

Thanks so much for showing his versatility. I remember him coming to Columbus, GA and even as a young kid I could appreciate his humbleness and awe that he had such a following. He made getting up in the morning to catch the school bus something to look forward to because I could get home work on homework and then watch "Dark Shadows"!

RIP Jonathan Frid. My first crush. All my other friends were so I'm love with the Monkees....I liked them too...but my heart still belonged to Barnabas. And after looking at your videos....I realize my heart still belongs to him.

Surprised to see that he hasn't been inducted into Canada's Walk Of Fame in Toronto. Especially now with all the craze about vampires and the remake of the series next year, he's certainly been brought back into the spotlight.

Thank You for that wonderful tribute to Jonathan Frid... It was 1968 - 7th Grade, I'd rush home from Charlotte High School in Rochester, New York school (I'd get out at 3:05) and get to theTV by 3:30 on ABC, Channel 13 to watch DS. As the years progressed with soccer and after school events I lost touch until the shows were put on video in the 90's. Thanks for posting such great memories of Dark Shadows.

Barnabas Collins was my hero. I knew as an 8 year old that he was not the evil being everyone else thought he was and was so happy to have been proven correct. I got my son hooked on DS when he was the same age as me. When he had to do a special report on “Romeo and Juliet” for his AP English class he found a photo of Jonathan Frid as Juliet’s father. His teacher and a few classmates exclaimed “Barnabas!” when the photo came up in his PowerPoint presentation. The rest of the class was clueless, so the teacher took time after my son had finished to explain who Barnabas was and who Jonathan Frid the actor was. My son and his friends said that it was the most memorable class of the entire year and that several kids checked out DS videos and got hooked on the series as a result of his showing the photo of Frid playing Lord Capulet!

Enjoyed seeing these old photos again. I used to collect all the daytime and fan magazines hoping for pictures of him and the DS gang. It's nice to have them here with such elegant music accompanying them. The one with Grayson Hall where he's in the safari jacket is priceless--sure wish they'd been a couple, Julia and Barnabas, in the storyline. Great montage!

Jonathan Frid and Nancy were just friends. The photographer posed Nancy and Jonathan in several publicity pictures with her cuddling up to Frid in a very short dress. Kind of exploited her for the pictures but that was all part of the job back then. Jonathan Frid adored Nancy but he never had any romantic relations nor feelings for any of the actresses he worked with , obviously. Mr. Frid had a whole lot of lady friends that he referred to as his 'gal-pals'.

wonderful tribute to a great actor especially on dark shadows where there was not much time for rehearsals. i have the entire collection of d.s. and i've loved that show since i was 12, like many others have commented in the past years. running home from school. dan curtis was a master in his field. ( baron) jonathan looks very sexy in a moustache and beard. dark shadows will live on for ever!! barnabas was the best.

At the height of the show's unprecedented popularity in the 60s, one time Dark Shadows was represented in a parade, Frid recalled in the Dark Shadows Home Companion. ABC approached him about maybe doing it laid out in an open coffin, in an open hearse. Frid drew the line about going that far. LOL

Both the bedroom scene and the shower scene were from 16 Magazine's "Adonis Gallery". I remember sending off for that when I was a teen and running to grab it out of the mailbox before my mother discovered it, LOL. I knew that she would rib me unmercifully. I told her about that years later and she just laughed and said she would have understood. She said she had her heroes, too, and showed me her old movie scrapbooks. Whew.

I read hundreds of very romantic and sentimental comments on youtube from Women who loved Frid and his sensitivity and his deep felt emotions that he channeled into his character. What saddens me, breaks my heart is that all, all these hundreds of ladies, DS fans, they all had the freedom to openly love and too marry who they wanted and too share that love openly without shame. Whereas actors like Jonathan Frid, Louis Edmonds, Joel Crothers, Craig Slocum, Keith Prentice and Christoper Bernau from Dark Shadows and the TV actor that someone down in the comments also mentioned, Richard Chamberlain as well, none of these gentlemen were allowed to legally have those loving relationships and marriages like all the Straight Women in the comments were allowed to have. All these Gentle men and gentle souls also had deeply felt romantic feelings in their lives but were not allowed to share them back then when it was still illegal to be Gay. That saddens me. :(

Come to think of it, those photos may have been from a magazine article entitled, "My Son, the Vampire". It's been so long ago, but I had that one as well; still do, somewhere. No. Let's see...I was nine when "DS" first aired in 1966. I did the videos to see if I could figure out the Movie Maker and uploading. I used to hear these great songs as a kid and thought that they went with certain scenes--all in my head, then--now realized. Gloria Stavers, 16's editor, had contact with the stars of popular culture; her's and vying mags kept stars like Frid busy--it must have been a promotional thing and good for #3 network ABC, which wished to capture the youth market.

I think I read in TV Guide after DS ended that the plot was to have Julia and Barnabus move to a tropical island to escape Angelique.I think Julia would have cured Barnabus and they would have married.The show ended as they were running out of plots and storylines.

Sweet. Thyme, are you also the Baron? I thought all the vid makers were the youngins. I am the same age as the real David Henesy. When he was twelve, I was twelve, etc. I just watched Seizure with Frid because its weird and I thought it had a shower scene, although he made that a few years after Shadows. If your magazines were puplished during the time DS was made then, when in the world did he pose for those. Nice to see a human side to Frid. We know of his night stalker stint.
