A Tribute to Palitoy Toy Designer Brian Turner

I am devastated by the news that Brian Turner has passed away. Brian was the Display Manager at Palitoy during Action Man's golden era and he went on to become a very accomplished toy designer in his own right.
Brian designed the Action Man Police Motorcycle & the Action Force Sealion and he helped to design the cardboard Palitoy Death Star. His contribution to the childhoods of a whole generation of British children can never be overstated and he will be dearly missed.
I was fortunate enough to spend a few days with Brian Turner back in 2011, when I was recording interviews for the Story of Action Man documentary and he was a lovely man, who was so generous with his time and knowledge that I could never thank him enough.

You produced a great story that is now out there as part of the legend that was Palitoy. And you continue to produce such epic stories about the company and its products. Really wanted that cardboard Death Star as a kid but my Mum was like "I'm not paying that FOR Cardboard !" so I had to get boxes from the supermarket, I remember the sheer WOW factor of seeing all the old Palitoy toys on the shelves even now as a 53 year old, so to be remembered for that and making so many childhoods happy is a great legacy

In the days before internet, it was displays like this in catalogs and toy fairs that I would stare at for hours. Imagining owning all the different toys in a line, imagining how you would play with them, which friends would use what vehicles. You would plan entire adventures to play out with your friends just from a single photo. Thank you Brian for inspiring a generation of kids to play, and thank you Tony for an honorable tribute.

I had a chance to meet Bob Brechin, Bill Turner and Bill Pughes all those years ago at Bovington Camp. It was my first time in England and the toy show as organized by Les Stories. They gave a little talk to the collectors and I couldn't wait to speak to them. Somewhere in my photo collection I have a picture of the three of them together. Bob Brechin had a factory model of the gripping hand and Captain Zargon"s head. He was so kind to let me photograph them. All three were so wonderful to answer my questions. My then wife had to pull me away from them. I still have one of their business cards. Thank you sir, thank Mr Turner for the time you gave me then and thank you for the toys and dreams you created for us.

I remember going Blackpool with me Mum & Dad in the early 70s & being mesmerised by the Action Man display in Woolworths huge window. It was fantastic! I wanna interested in the pleasure beach. I just looked in that window every time we walked past while me old man dragged me down the front so we could go the pub.

This is great; in terms of display, we actively learn about something that takes great care and talent. Tbe Sealion design would have occupied hours for me, who grew up with Kenner and the once-great Fisher Price introduction to 3-3/4. .

What a wonderful way to celebrate a life who touched so many souls.
