I appreciate you discussing your triggers with The House Witch as it’s a good reminder that trigger warnings are valid and it’s okay to stop a book to protect your mental health and comfort ❤

Well said. I'm weary of even other die-hard readers judging the validity of my own trigger, which is not the same as Janey's, but is very real to me. I read a metric ton of horror, and yet someone can decide I'm not "hard core" enough because I don't like this one thing? Oh, whatever. At 52, I have *finally* realized I don't have to explain my reasons to anyone, much less someone trying to judge me for something that dumb. I'm so glad younger readers are realizing this so much earlier than I did! 🎃

The House Witch really should have trigger warnings! They're especially important for cozy books

I wish most books had trigger warnings. I don't really need them but I know others would benefit from them.

I think so too, I was expecting a nice warm time, and it totally took me by surprise!!

A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness is my favourite witch book ever! It’s the start of the All Souls series. The Sweep series by Cate Tiernan is a good series about witches. The first book is called Book of Shadows. ADOW is adult and Sweep is YA.

i'm writing a cozy-ish series where the main character has a past with DV but it's only referenced (not in detail) because it was really important to me. i have trigger warnings, and i truly hate when authors don't use them. we all need friends like steph that look out for our reading mental health 💕

I, and I’m sure many others, appreciate you putting the content warning there! It’s nice to know when an author is able to put a readers mental wellbeing first 🧡🧡🧡

I liked the House witch, forgot about that part of the story, been awhile, didn't think it was a big part, but I don't remember much now and I have honey witch on my TBR

I'm glad you enjoyed one of those books at least. I hope you have better luck when you do this "challenge" again. I also hope you have an amazing weekend filled with lots of reading!! My plan was to read all weekend but I don't think that will work out this time and I have plans during the week so I guess I'll focus on reading in November.

The nature of Witches sounds like one of those books where I go "That is a book that I read" and nothing more. It's not bad, but there was nothing super special about it either. I have started that book but only got to 20% before I soft dnf'd it

I felt the same way about The Nature of Witches. It was just okay.

Lovely vlog ❤ I think there shouldn't be graphic content in a cosy fantasy book. I just looked up The house witch on SG for the triggers and there are 3 at the graphic tier. I also think there shouldn't be any moderate ones and there are 3 of those as well. Quite a lot for a supposed lighthearted cosy book. Tip, I do think you use SG: on you profile preferences you can put trigger warnings in there and on a book it will alert you if it's in that book. Might help

The thing that annoyed you in Honey Witch... Annoyed me too and it was one of the biggest things about the book that didn't work for me... But I read it during a time when things felt really bleak and it was a book I needed to just shut off my brain.

I hope things are feeling a little brighter for you now, and that the book gave your brain a little reprieve!

I read it and was dissappointed, just 3 stars. I like to read love stories, but this one fell flat. They should have opted for just found family and friendship.

It's really not a big part of the book and not the series. I'm wondering if this trigger warning is a bit overblown.

The HOney Witch was so close to a 5 star for me with the grief aspects and writing but the romance really annoyed me and I do feel the pacing was off which stopped me giving it the full marks when normally if a book makes me cry, it's normally a five star but this wasn't/ And yeah, Marigold came across as almost determined to be oblivious which annoyed me as her intelligence just did not match the way she was introduced!

Are any of the books sapphic?

I do believe the main character in the Honey Witch is bi (very queer normative world) and her love interest in the book is a woman. Similarly I think the main character in The Nature of Witches is bi, as we see a past relationship with a woman, but her love interest in this story is a man.

Hmmm... I honestly don't think DV and hard triggering content like that should feature in a book marketed as "Cozy Fantasy"... It at least should have trigger warnings then 👀... Cozy fantasy is supposed to be, well, Cozy, low trigger, low trauma, low anxiety etc.

I've overall liked The House Witch okay, but I truly disliked some of the humorous takes, especially for alcoholism. I do not appreciate it being treated as a fun joke. I think it made me not want to pick up the next book, maybe I will one day, but eh.
