I don't know if you've read the manga, "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness" but I definitely recommend it. It's an autobiography and it is was a breath of fresh air after reading so much wlw manga that was more geared towards straight people.

I’d also really recommend the “green yuri” officially titled “the guy she was interested in wasn’t a guy at all” it subverts many of the unfortunate tropes that tend to be in w|w manga that isn’t really geared towards sapphic people. There’s a wonderful sapphic community around it as well

"The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All" is a good sapphic manga I found this year. It doesn't feel male catering at all, and has more the romance story manga vibe for a shoujo/josei (girl/older woman) audience. There's also Bloom Into You, which has a touch of ace rep and teenage angst. I can't recall it leaning more to the male audience, but it definitely feels more like shoujo manga than shounen. Then there's the outrageous Yurikuma Arashi, by a male, and despite its surreal sexual-metaphor scenes (in the anime at least), it's actually talking a lot about the lesbian social experience in Japan and a surrealist critique of how there's a societal expectation that sapphic romances should stop after school years as its frowned upon in adult years, and can lead to social shaming/shunning. It's why there's so little manga of women in relationships, even as side characters, and a lot more of it features school age girls (ick). That said adult women sapphic stories exist, they're just hard as heck to find.
@LesbiatureАй бұрын
Ahh I see, thank you for this explanation, that’s also how I kind of understood why there are so few honest wlw selections. But thank you also for these recs, I have heard of Bloom Into You and might give both of these a shot!

I love the manga She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat. It’s a soft love story w adult women and it’s not sexual or catering to the male gaze. It’s a very sweet fluffy manga

@@Lesbiature in that same vein, you should definitely read Love Bullet, it’s still early on in the story but the author really needs the support and it’s about a group of cupids who have a chance at love and life again (it’s wlw but once again still early in the manga)

I've had a similar feeling of dissatisfaction with some popular lesbian manga, so I hope it's okay to give recs! Runaway With Me Girl is about a woman who meets up with her highschool ex-girlfriend 10 years after graduation. Because the protagonists are adults, I'd say it's more emotionally mature and "real" - it has one sex scene, but in my opinion it's done well. I also really enjoyed She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat, which is about two neighbours who become friends (and eventually more) through a shared love of food. My last recommendation is Our Dreams at Dusk - the main character is a gay teen who joins an LGBT group where he meets other people in his town like him. The most prominent side characters are two lesbians who are very important to the story, and have several chapters about their own relationship to one another. I hope you enjoy one or more of these reads if you end up checking them out!! great video

I have read the Priory of the Orange Tree, and enjoyed it. If you want a really wonderful Sapphic trilogy then get When Women Were Warriors by Catherine M Wilson. There's a coming of age story, The characters have depth and a back story, there's political intrigue, and different cultures. It'sone of my favorite Sapphic Tales. There is another good trilogy by K Aten in which Kyri a young woman joins an Amazon tribe. There's lots of action anda sizzling romance between Kyri and the queen Orianna.

Thanks for the video!! Another manga you could try out, which is not suffering from male gaze (TM), is "How do we relationship?" In my opinion is one of the best depictions of queer relationships, the two main characters grow a lot throughout the seires. It's not complete yet, but it is worth to pick up even now before it is all out, in my opinion. There is also a fantasy series that I don't hear anyone talking about. It's called "Elemental Logic", first book being "Fire Logic". It's quite dark fantasy, gritty, but it is also very fascinating. The magic system is based on 4 elements, but it defines also the personality of the characters in a way. It's a bit of an older series, but if reading about it makes you curious, you could try pick up the first book. Only warning is: the magic system is very soft, doesn't have super clear and tight rules, or at least they don't get explained. So if that is not your cup of tea, you might want to thread carefully :)

I’d love to hear what you think about The Blacksea Odyssey by J.A. Vodvarka! The trilogy (Unworthy, Unbound, and Unyielding) is, admittedly, not perfect in its prose, but I very much adored the characters and it is *loaded* with sapphic content, including - not one, but TWO enemies to lover’s story lines. I really enjoyed the plot, and haven’t seen much on it as it’s a more recent indie series! Very much recommend though (I tore through the entire series in a couple days as I had a hard time putting it down). It’s an arcane-punk fantasy with gods n whatnot, and a very good time I’d say. I’m also working through Gearbreakers right now, and loving it so far!! Glad to hear that the sequel is just as good, if not better than the first (I typically shy away from series out of fear of that exact problem haha) Great video!! Very happy to have found your channel :D

Oh thank you for this!! Unworthy has been on my radar but I’ve been nervous because I haven’t heard much about it since it’s so new - but you’ve psyched me up to check it out! Also I love that you’re enjoying Gearbreakers! And YES the sequel is so good 😭🫶🏻

Have you read The Jasmine Throne? It was my favorite book this year. I clicked the video to see what you thought about The Dark Tide. I personally kinda hated it and was really confused why it was even labeled as sapphic. I also saw someone recommend My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and I’ll second that recommendation

I just heard about the Jasmine Throne and will be checking that out for sure! The Dark Tide definitely was kind of disappointing :/ But thank you for these recs!

Carmilla is probably my all time favorite book, I’ve read 2 (maybe 3?) editions and one and annotated the same edition as you. My favorite sapphic reads this year were, in no order: TLDR The scapegracers, August Clarke. Magic high schoolers. Gideon the ninth, Tamsyn Muir. Fantasy mystery. Our Hideous Progeny, CE McGill. Frankenstein descendant. We used to live here, Marcus Kliewer. Psychological horror. Camp Damascus, Chuck Tingle. Religious horror. Criers war, Nina Varela. Robot royalty. Crimson sails. Fantasy pirates (selkie & vampire). Honorable queer mention: The salt grows heavy, Cassandra Khaw. Dark fairytale. Currently reading Lucy undying. Really recommend the audiobook. -The scapegracers by August Clarke. Lesbian witches, a snarky demon, and gay dads. “Friendship is magic” but mixed with a subverted mean girls trope. It was AMAZING. Not super romance heavy but really beautiful queer friendships and blossoming of crushes, I’m reading book 2 now and it’s just as good. 5/5 quick read. -Gideon the ninth by tamsyn Muir. Other people have definitely made more compelling arguements for this but I’ll just say to look at the amazing fanart people make for this and it will be enough to convince you like it did me. 5/5, I’ve already bought the other books. -Our hideous progeny by ce mcgill. While mostly plot heavy, the relationships that are explored in this are so tender and real and I was yearning right along with our mc. 5/5 -We used to live here by Marcus Kliewer. Horror that genuinely kept my up at night and caused my heart to race. A lesbian couple new in town is visited by a strange family. 5/5 -Camp damascus by chuck tingle. Religious horror with friendship and romance along the way. I really enjoyed this, the writing has a distinct voice and the situations and relationships were so real I had to take breaks. The audiobook truly brings it to life. Really great nd character. Also turned my stomach. -crimson sails by Katee Robert. I did not read book 1 before this and was fine. 4/5 quick read! - Some from last year were -Criers war by nina varela. Robots, romance, royalty. Lots and lots of tears and it was really well written and the plot was balanced perfectly with the romance. 5/5 -The salt grows heavy is not exactly sapphic but I wanted to throw it in (nonbinary/unlabeled x woman) it’s truly beautiful, haunting, thought provoking, and best of all: a 3 hour listen. I really recommend the audiobook. I’m currently listening to Lucy undying by Kiersten white, it’s beautifully narrated and I have a feeling it will be 5/5.

I see someone already suggested Milk Morinaga's "Girlfriends", which is a great read for a better portrayal of girls in their first relationship. I'd also suggest her other works. Wait for it: "Kisses, Sighs, and Cherry Blossoms Pink". I know how it sounds but it's actually really cute. "My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness" was a great read. Not afraid to shy away from the reality. There is also a sequel out for it but I haven't read it. Might I suggest Hiyori Otsu's works? Very specifically, "Aqua Blue Cinema" and "Clover"? These are some of the most down-to-earth yuri works I have found. Compared to a lot of the 'yuri' out there, hers is very sweet and the relationships feel much more genuine/'realistic' for mangas anyway. And Honey & Honey by Sachiko Takeuchi is autobiographical and pretty good. Actual adults in a relationship is always nice. Let us know if you like those...

Loved your video. You did a great job. Some books I haven't read yet and others I have. I'm a sucker for sapphic fantasy, my go to genre, I had high hopes for Priory since it was so hyped, ultimately it was a let down. The sapphic romance and world was its saving grace, but overall it was eh, compared to other sapphic fantasies I've read.
@LesbiatureАй бұрын
Thank you! I love a good sapphic fantasy as well, and I completely agree about priory. There are plenty of other sapphic fantasies that deserve the hype priory got!

@@Lesbiature Sam Ferran books are really good, they write character driven fantasy with a sapphic romance or two in their novels. Silvia Shaw's Rand trilogy is really good. Also if you like Dark Fantasy, SD Simper. And I absolutely love Hiyodori's Clem and Wist books.

The only queer Manga i felt some connection with was the Blue Flag series 💕 very much recommend but you really need to stick it out until the end for the whole picture. Also one that ive only seen the anime for ((and is not just made for fetishization)) was Madoka Magika? I watched it in middle school and didnt recognize it as Sapphic until my roomate recently pointed it out and i totally see why i loved it so much

Read Priory (and its prequal, which I liked more and was more queer), Gear breakers (even if I try not to read to much YA), and a ton more queer books. Went back to reading Sarah Waters, all the Sarah Waters. Have not read She Who becomes the Sun. Boulder is written in what language originally?
@Lesbiature10 күн бұрын
Boulder was written in Catalan!

@Lesbiature my Catalan is rusty. I'll recognize 40% based on my Spanish language. I wonder if there is a Spanish translation. The English version sounds lovely!

The last book sounds refreshing. I love the phase three moons instead of three months it's cute. As a lesbian who learn English as a second language, I find myself quite motivated by reading queer stuff hahaha. BTW I don't like very sexual graphic manga either so I would recommend these 1. Stretch by Akili. It's a stretching manga. The story is about 2 girls who knew each other from high school and became a roommate. The student doctor one ask the other to help her practice stretching post. I love this silly book soooo much. Their relationship is so funny. Also not really a single kiss or portrait sex scene because they are busy on keep prank each other every chance they have. 2. Suito-to! by Okino Yui. It's a food manga. The story is about an ordinary college girl who really love meat and other fatty food. She keeps on posting sugary and sweet kinds of food on social media to protect her image(very Japan society things). One day, her quiet classmate finds out about this secret and also another secret that she being lesbian. The story goes on kind of slow-burn chemistry and find new exciting food spots(base on real restaurant) to share the love of food with each other. . Hope this help you find new test of manga. Thanks for your book's recommendation.

As someone who has read many, many, many yuri /gl manga and comics since 2011 the bad days. The recommendations in the comments for almost all of them are great, and I've read all of the ones I've seen in the comments. I hope you will put out a video with a review out the recommendations. Pretty please. Edit forgot to add my recommendations Ring my bell, a web comic so not easy to find Cheerful amnesia manga Beauty and the beast girl manga Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord manga Kase-san and morning glory (this series has a lot of kase-san and etc. Stories so look up reading order) manga Sora & Haena! Web comic? I think.

I share the sentiment that lesbian manga has a long way to go to truely cater towards their target audience. I have sifted through a lot of not ideal reads to be once again disappointed that it wasn't what i was looking for which is simply a cute love story between two women where no-one dies and there isn't exesively sexual scenes. Sigh, one day...
