That was John's Street where you were walking from the rail station in search of a taxi. You passed St John's Church and Priory on your way. The church part still continues in regular use (it was my church when I was in boarding school in Kilkenny). The priory part was the adjacent ruin and was - if I recall correctly - established in the early 1100's. The guided tour of the castle gives a very good history lesson from the original builder (William Marshall - "the best knight that ever lived") through to the powerful family that came to own it (the Butlers of Ormond) and all their interconnections with the Tudor dynasty in England - Ann Boleyn (wife #2 & beheading #1 of Henry VIII) was born in Kilkenny Castle. If you had looked over the garden wall of the castle, directly across the river, you'd see the River Court Hotel, but to the right and behind that there's a very large building in its own extensive grounds (now a car park). This is now County Hall, the headquarters of the Local Authority, but was actually the college I attended (a good few years ago now). oh ... and 10am is definitley waaaay too early ...lol
