Oh those Frenchies! Still, it is a remarkably picturesque place. I visited it last year and loved it, though the pub lunch was not especially good, big disappointment to say the least (i think it was in the Standard). Glad you found Paul Nash's house and plaque. Loved the house with two front doors, reminds me of a Beatles film where each member enters their own front door only to find themselves in one huge room! Probably the most photogenic town. Every way you turn make you want to photograph the view.

I love all your films Marq, but this one is my favourite. What a lovely place and you showcased it so well. The hotel looks like a fascinating place to stay; reminds me a little of when Rich and I stayed at Hever Hotel, once part of the estate of the 13th century Hever Castle, childhood home of Anne Boleyn. So much history it takes your breath away. Lovely views from the church tower too, just fabulous! Thank you so much for showing us around 🥰

Thanks Marq. That was really good. A comprehensive tour of the town and it's lovely buildings. Loved the interior of the Mermaid and Ship Inns. They both looked very cosy and welcoming. So many famous people seemed to have lived there in the past. Of course, the cobbled streets would have been done for horses, to give their hooves some grip. Yes I know they are difficult to walk on! We're getting used to you and your old doors. Now I have to touch and mention your name. Hope you don't mind, as I will give your channel a mention. We have our next video coming out at the end of the week, Cardiff Castle, so if you're happy, I'll mention your name and interests on the video. Bye for now and happy exploration.

Hi Marq, thanks for sharing your trip to lovely Rye. About 18 years ago my wife and I got a great low season mid week 2 night dinner, B&B deal in the Mermaid . The first night while enjoying a nightcap in the bar we were entertained by the night porter who told us tales of the ghosts and smugglers, your video has evoked fond memories of that trip and plan another early winter. Keep well mate.

Amazing, Rye is about 30 miles from home and I have barely scratched the surface. Been a couple of times, must remedy that especially as some of my favourite books are based there. Mapp and Lucia of course and a set of genealogical novels have the hero of the books, Morton Farrier living at the House with two front doors, written by Nathan Dylan Goodwin. They are all based in and around East Sussex.

Did you sample Simon the Pieman's cakes? Rye is a well known tourist destination so not surprised the High Street was busy. I'm learning from you and previously Richard Vobes, to get out of my car and walk. You say your room was small but I bet it was cozy. Didn't know that the power station in Dungeness was used in films - you're a mind of useless information ha ha. Really enjoyed this video, a place I must return to asap

@@MarqEnglish I'm not supposed to eat cakes either as I'm diabetic. Mentioning Dungeness brings me back to my childhood days on the little steam trains of the RH&DR. Lovely to see all those old buildings still standing in Rye. Did you eat breakfast at the hotel? Was it good?

There is something special about Rye- so ancient. I can remember walking past a v.small gap between buildings there with steps going down what was a steep slope. There was a plaque there saying that this was where the French .had landed in the 14th C. : the sea in those days coming right up to the walls of the town. I wonder if it’s still there now? Thank goodness they gave in the end. Very enjoyable video!🙂
