MARAYOOR SANDALWOOD FOREST

The Marayoor sandalwood reserve in Kerala, spread over 1,460.7 hectares, close to one-sixth the size of Kochi, is currently one of the very few forests with high-quality sandalwood in India.As per the latest estimate, the number of sandalwood trees in the Marayoor reserve is 57,000, and the estimated value is Rs 3,000 crores. As a highly-priced forest patch in India, Marayoor is guarded round the clock by armed forest guards and watchers as well as thermal infrared cameras aimed at protecting the forest from smugglers.
