Great advice Cal... I really enjoyed this episode. Flatfish and some other 'old school lures' very often work great especially when fishing is slow on the isual offerings. Mixing it up and showing trout lites they have never seen is a great technique. Sometimes I go wild when tieing up feathered and yarn 'jigs' (really just long shank fly hooks wrapped first with lead wire or strips, then crazy mixes of feathers, yarn, cslf tail, etc. with wild colours). Great!@

How are you getting the lure to the depth you want?
@Chronodemon3 жыл бұрын
Found out by chance the other day that the fish would only bite that day by trolling a flatfish fast (speed 4 on a 32lb thrust minn kota). I usually run on speed 2 and have awesome results. That flatfish is pretty versatile.

Any advice on casting flat fish from shore? I have a few flat fish but they are so light I can't get any distance from shore.
@FHSTackle5 жыл бұрын
Well there are a couple things you can do...One you can put a split shot or two on the line ...You can also pair them with a clear bobber filled with water....this is the same rig as you'd use with a fly...The old bubble and fly...Rigged like this you can cast a long distance and use a slow stop and start retrieve!
@307mtb5 жыл бұрын
@@FHSTackle Thanks Cal, I was thinking about the bubble but wasn't sure if it would mess up the action or diving. I'll give it a try, thanks again
@FHSTackle5 жыл бұрын
@@307mtb Yep that bubble is a great equalizer for bank guys...You might have to deal with a problem or two, but heck with a fast action spinning rod and a bubble filled with an ounce of water you can straight up chuck that bobber! If you fill the bubble completely it will actually slowly sink!...I like to just bulge the surface with it...The wake seems to attract the fish....

Jack, I would try the Flatfish with either a slider rig with a small slinky weight or pencil lead, or a split shot just heavy enough to cast, or you may snag up. Hope this helps! John Mc., Palo Cedro, CA

Hey Cal, I have one all chrome with a cross bar and two treble hooks . Can’t remember where I got it but I’ll give it a try, must be old cus i have had it forever.... if I lose it I’ll blame you haha.

You know what? I thought that the old school balance beam hooks were gone, but no....You can still order Flatfish with those hooks...Having said that I don't know what the advantage is....I've had a great strike to hook ratio with the standard hooks on body set up....

I bank fish for now. My question is will flat fish also work for cast and retrieval? Thanks.
@cmchatton16805 жыл бұрын
Ryan, Try using just enough split shot to cast, about 18 inches from the Flatfish. You could also use a slider rig with a small slinky weight or pencil lead. Too much weight will lead to snagging up, so go just heavy enough for a decent cast. John Mc., Palo Cedro, CA

We’re being spoiled with all the videos! I’ve fished out of boats for years. But I absolutely love how intimate kayak fishing is. I don’t see a lot of guys post videos about kayak trolling. Great content!
