Naarden Vesting does indeed hold a special place in the Netherlands with its historical significance and charm. The Vesting Museum offers a unique window into the past. Exploring the city by bike is a memorable experience, especially for those from the US looking to immerse themselves in Dutch history. Naarden Vesting is also part of a UNESCO World Heritage site! So...if your planning a trip to the Netherlands from the US or if you live an!y where in the Netherlands the Vesting Museum is a must visit

Bourtange if definitely interesting as well, especially since it's different from Naarden in many ways. - It's a fortress turned village (where Naarden is a city that kind of turned fortress) - it was largely demolished, and reconstructed in the 1980's (where Naarden was never demolished although some parts were to accomodate modern traffic) - etc. But definitely: worth a visit (although I have bad memories on cycling in that area for it being flat and open and kind of boring for a young kid)

Awesome and surreal to see you guys in my corner of the world! Naarden-Vesteing really is great, isn’t it? Did you guys do a “rondje Vesting”? (walk around the city) You asked recommendations. So as someone who lived in Bussum for 26 years and Huizen for 9, well… :)) First of all… all the nature! Pretty much all the forests and heathers (hei/heide) are great and have great places to eat/drink. (Heidezicht, Tafelberg, het Bluk) I also love to walk along the Gooimeer. Start at Zomerkade and walk to restaurant Bruis. Go have icecream at the 2 best icecream places in ‘t Gooi: Sundaes (Huizen) and De Hoop (Blaricum). The last one has been best icecream shop of the Netherlands and is a Must for anyone living in ‘t Gooi. In the summer, go to outdoor swimming pool Sijsjesberg. Or take the Eemlijn boat with (or without) your bike. Or go back to the Vesting and take a boat around it. :) Have you been to Foodhall Mout yet? The Muiderslot castle? Sooooooo much to see! Can’t wait to see what you check out. Sometimes it’s the less well known things that speak to a person, so who knows. Last thing I would say is that one of the things I find interesting about ‘t Gooi is that all the villages have a very distinct “vibe”. Even when they are close/next to each other. Something to maybe pay attention to when you visit. Enjoy!!

If you don't have a museumkaart yet, get one! You can buy them at any museum for €75. Gives you free entry for a year to almost every museum. That includes most castles and the big open air museums like Arnhem and Zuiderzeemuseum. I love vesting Naarden. My dad used to take us there when we were kids. You could combine Muiderslot and Fort Pampus. The boat to Pampus is right next to Muiderslot. Fort Pampus was also part of the Dutch Waterlinie. You could ride your bike to Muiderslot. From Vesting Naarden to Muiderslot is about the same distance as Hilversum to Naarden. Zuiderzeemuseum is one of my favourites. You take the train to Enkhuizen. The museumboat is right in front of the train station. Enkhuizen is definitely worth a visit.

This brought back childhood memories, living in Den Briel in the late 70's. Brielle too was a beautiful fortified town with those bunkers and cannons, every day i would walk the path along the dike and bunkers towards school. Though much of the old houses have replaced with new vinex houses, as if the soul had been removed, that is how i perceived it when i went back some years ago. The dikewalls, gates and bunkers though are or still being rebuilt so some history is preserved. The end with the bike ride actually brings a tear of joy to my eyes, this is the Netherlands beyond Amsterdam and a joy to live in. :)

Try to get a bit more out of the Randstad: - Delden situated in the east in Overijssel. Great nature, great Castle. It is called Kasteel Twickel. Twickel is really a beauty and still privately owned. - Deventer - Groningen - Maastricht - Take a bike ride in Drente or kanoing - Breda There is so much more outside the Randstad. The Netherlands is so much more then the Randstand. All easy to reach by train.

Here in Westervoort where I live, there is the first waterlinie fortefication outley, some kilometers from the border with Germany. So manny things to explore in our small country. Yust jump on your bick and go... The island pampus. Is not to far from Hilversum. It is a famous protecting army fort. Voor pampus liggen. ( we are flat out) Is a duth experession. That comes from this little eiland. In the old days they had to wait if they could sail further to Amsterdam. Anyway. Enough to explore. Especialy now in this great springseason. Has anyone suggested the Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen? It's well worth spending a day there in the outdoor museum (a village constructed from houses moved there from around the Zuiderzee.) There's also an indoor museum (with old boats/sailing ships) included in the ticket price, if I remember correctly. Enkhuizen itself is also well worth the visit, just to walk around and take in the atmosphere. It's easy to access by train and you take a sort of landing craft from the train station, across the water to the museum itself.

And while I'm thinking of it, there's the 'historische-driehoek' - Just Google "zuiderzeemuseum historische-driehoek" You take the train to Hoorn, then a steam train to Medemblijk, then a steamship back to Enkhuizen. It's a bit of fun, that you don'g get to do every day, but it's a limited service, that may need to be booked in advance.

I heard Naarden is beautiful but have never been there. Probably because we have our own vestingstad nearby. It's Heusden. Not preserved but very well restored in the 70's and 80's. Allthough they did a very crappy job at recreating the castle ruins there. The Netherlands has quite a few vestingsteden, even some big ones but the smaller ones tend to be more recognizable as a lot of the fortifications in the bigger ones often disapeared when the city expanded. Heusden is probably a bit too far for you to bike to but if you ever decide to visit, I would recommend stopping for a pancake in the pancake restaurant at the market square, stop for dessert at the ice cream parlor and certainly take home a bag of 2022 award winning Brabantse worstenbroodjes from Bakkertje Deeg, which is right next to the ice cream parlor. You could also stay for a few days and rent a room in hotel "De verdwaalde Koogel" (The stray bullet).

OK next stop then Bourtange. You can't do that in one day as it is in the extreme northeast of the Netherlands. Also a fortress city/village, but much older than Naarden (from the 80 year war of independence). They als have a reenactment once a year. Don't know when exactly. No tunnels, but much more quirky.

For viewers and yourself to understand the fortification, you need to look at an aerial image of this "city" - in the NL, originally, villages or towns became cities when some noble figure bestowed "city rights" on them. Naarden got that about 1300. At 300m * 500m, its nucleus has village size. But the fortifications above ground are around that. The star outline was constructed in the moat as a way to defend against attackers. From each star you could easily shoot your cannon left or right to attackers between two star points.

In your own new town, visiting the famous 'gemeentehuis' of Hilversum would be nice. It is a world famous building from the architect Dudok. He was the cities architect, who build lots of neighbourhoods and schools in Hilversum too, in a very specific 'Dudok' style. Most of them have a 'monument status' now. There are guided tours in the city hall and around the 'Dudok' neighbourhoods. Enjoy!

We love it here and we visit the Vesting many times., although we live just outside the fortress. Sometimes for shopping, other times enjoying a meal in one of the nice restaurants, or just having an ice cream. For us it is only a five minute bike ride. Maybe we''ll meet in real life some day. I welcome you to visit some places in the east for your upcoming videos. The Arnhem-Nijmegen-Veluwe region is completely different from the *boring* flat ones you’ve mentioned so far.. I’d be glad to show you around (by bike OF COURSE) or answer any of your questions in advance to planning the trip! 💙💛🖤 Also: if you like a bit of history, visit the Veenhuizen Museum. You’d be able to peek back in time to when the ‘verzorgingsstaat’ was founded in the 1800s. They’d pretty much detain the drunk and poor and put them to hard labour, but the idea to ‘look after’ the socially inapt really took off from there. Also: continuing on the history and assuming you Americans like a parade or two: visit (or better, join) the Airborne ‘wandeltocht’ in September. There will be military parades from WW2 allied nations, lots of parties and you will be officially Dutch after participating in one of the group hikes along historical places.

Funniest thing about Naarden Vesting, and the reason why it's so well preserved, is because it was never really used lol. It was built after the attack on Naarden by the Spanish in 1572 and then remained in use as a fortress until 1926, but never really saw any real battles in all that time. Then in the 20th century it was abandoned by the army and turned into a museum.

Almost true; the Dutch actually sieged it to get the French out in 1813-1814. Since the Dutch had built such nice fortifications the French were not defeated here, but in the end were granted a retreat with honours nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beleg_van_Naarden_(1813-1814)

I see the roaming on bikes has begun. You live in such a great area for that. Laren, Gold Coast of the Netherlands is interesting too. The Singer Museum is another hidden gem imo. And Hilversum has a radical, socialist and esoteric/mystical past dating from the early 20th century.....even including an attempt to bring Thoreau's "Walden" into reality as an artists' colony. You are absolutely right! A town is always smaller than a city and Naarden is a town. They got their STADSRECHTEN in 1351 and they are still the only town in 'Het Gooi". They are what we call een 'Vestingstad' (Fortress-town).

@@sigrunwestrus68 Indeed. And "Stadsrechten" (English: "City Rights") imply that the town that has those "rights" is officially a "city", but that is purely a formal and legal thing. For foreigners that is hard to understand... So in international context it is better to reserve the word city for very large urban entities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, etc, and Town's like Naarden are just a whole level (or two) smaller.

Good place isn’t it? When you say it especially is good when you have children, Eric must feel at home there 😂. The Netherlands has been at war with Spain for over 80 years, called de tachtig jarige oorlog. It was Willem van Oranje who got his fame in that time, and he is an ancestor of our royal family. Naarden was important in that time as it defended Holland, the two provinces. In the north there were also two important vestingen, Coevorden and Bourtange. Coevorden developed to a more modern city, but parts of the triangle shaped defense-walls are still there and it has a lovely little castle. And I surely recommend a visit to Bourtange. It is 8n the province of Groningen and is kept in original state. Have fun traveling around and don’t forget to visit me in Lelystad. A new city, where there is a museum where they build those 16th century ships after original plans from that time. It functions as a school for carpentry as well. Happy discovery. Erik

Naarden is nice. It is special because it is a very old part of the Waterlinie, and is both a town and a fortress. The Spaniards did a terrible massacre there. If you like fortifications, there is a long string of forts going south from Naarden. Two especially nice ones are fort Rhijnauwen and fort Vechten, to the east and south-east of Utrecht. Rhijnauwen is the biggest, but not always open to the public. It has a very nice pannekoekenrestaurant near it. Vechten has a nice museum. Both forts are from the second half of the 19th century. Personally, I like Loosdrecht. Nice place to rent a small sail-boat and cruise the lakes and have a good dinner afterwards. I think you would like Kasteel de Haar, to the west of Utrecht. And the Muiderslot, a bit beyond Naarden. Cycling to Lage Vuursche is very nice. The Queen-mother lives there, in Kasteel Drakensteyn (not accessible to the public). "Buiten in de Kuil" is a nice restaurant.

A brief history lesson on what makes/made a town a city . In medieval days , all the lands were in possesion of nobles and all living there were basically Serfs . Nobles could grant a town " City Rights " This meant that said town could now collect its own taxes and have a town militia and have their own law/justice system , also the people were no longer Serfs ( among other rights ) Towns themselves could also ask their Lord to grant them city rights , usualy by offering a huge one time payment . ( They still owed their Lord taxes , but I'm guessing at a reduced percentage .) In , roughly , the 16th century , the nobles lost a lot of their rights on the lands and the towns and people became much more autonomous , and the practice of granting city rights no longer mattered . During the French Revolution and Napoleonic era , the distinction between a town with city rights and those without was made irrelevant . I grew up in the City of Grave which got its city rights in 1233 AD from the Duke of Brabant . Untill today its a small town ( Aprox 6000 inhabitants ) but if an outsider would call it a town or a village we would fiercly tell them that it is a City , NOT a town/village ! It became even more spicy if they told us that they came from a much bigger , but newer city , that had never been granted those city rights , we would call them villagers ( And Hicks or Hilbillies 😁( In Dutch ofcourse ) ) On a sidenote ? Great vid and I love Naarden , its so pretty 😊

@@reviewerdiogeones5857 Okay, all I am asking is: sta even in mijn schoenen. My normal is hills with 13% degrees amongst other less steep hills. For my normal this was/is flat. The 35 meters might make me feel more like in south Limburg, but mostly it points out to me how much different it is. There is no direction I can take without having a hill, and another hill, and vals plat. It's called heuvelland not for not. We have bikes but so much less compared to Randstad. And not just because there are less people. With the e-bikes there is an increase with bikes here. Most people had scooters and brommers, and would go get gass either in Germany or Belgium. A lot of border hopping happening here, not just from the Dutch. Drug tourism, Maastrich you can't enter a coffeeshop without Dutch ID, or papers that show you are a resident of Maastricht. Most people won't use the bike for longer bike rides than to school and back. Going from east south Limburg (Parkstad) to Maastricht is not a thing people will take a bike for; just about 25 km, the OV and cars are more the mode of transport for that. Riding a bike from the 3 biggest cities in south Limburg from one to another is not a very common thing that people do here. Sittard/Geleen, Heerlen, Maastricht. You might go from Sittard to Geleen with a bike, small distances. Van een gemeente naar een andere, maar niet meerdere gemeentes doorkruisend. Dat gebeurt echt niet snel hier. Niet met de mensen die ik ken. Or just around the neighborhood.

You would like Elburg and Harderwijk. Two interesting towns close together! BTW, I'm enjoying your videos , especially when you were living near Vroesepark. I was born on the Statensingel... many moons ago!

Nice to see you explore the same places as I did when I first moved here from the southern provincie of Brabant to Laren where I live now, for 14 years already. Still feel a little like a tourist in my own country....... so much more to visit. Enjoy it.

Ditto! Wij zijn 40 jaar geleden vanuit Brabant deze contreien gaan opzoeken en wonen sinds 1995 in het Gooi. Het voelt nog steeds als vakantie met een beetje thuisgevoel

A friend of mine lives there. It's a beautiful location, and although a bus from Naarden-Bussum station travels there, it's better to bring a bike in the train...

Yeah, beautiful there, and especially the biking. Dont forget to put a cycling tour around the bloembollenvelden (Lisse and surrounding places) in coming weeks on your list. Last week still a lot of purple hyacinten on the fields, but tulips are also coming soon!

Back in the sixties when there weren't yet that many music festivals, one called 'veertien uur puur' was held here, If I recall corectly it was for three springs in a row. All kinds of bands playing in the 'Promerskazerne' and outside too with all people relaxing on the grass, of course smoking weed and using other stuff. It was quite a happening and the first day the entire vesting was closed for all non festival traffic.

YAY! I got a shoutout!!! Great video and you two are just having way too much fun on your adventures. Those bike rides allow us to live vicariously through your camera lens, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to being there in person. Maybe as viewers, we could help you rename the "hidden gems" title. I'll start! How about "Dutch Treats"? Wait, wait, maybe not that. "Local Treasures"? I'm sure other people can figure out a better one. Thanks again you two and keep up the awesome adventures!

I had no idea they still fired the canons. They already did that when I went to school in Naarden in the 80's. I used to go to the "Middelbare School" (Mavo/Havo) that was just outside the Vesting area. I lived in the neighboring village of Bussum at the time. The whole Gooi en Eemland area is one of the prettiest in the country. and I need to be a bit of a grammar police but in your description you say UNESCO World Heritage Sight... this of course should read UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And after visiting the castle, you can walk into Muiden, have something to drink at pub Ome Ko, watching boats going through the sluizen. Besides it be a fun thing to do, the sluis was also part of the defense of Amsterdam, being able to flood all ground around the city - making it impossible for horses and carriages to travel there
