It's surprising to see how shocked some Europeans are regarding America's concerns about their lack of interest in funding their own defense and national security. The GW Bush administration (and those that followed) had warned European leaders about cutting too sharply into defense. Those warnings went mostly unheeded and so did the threat Russia truly posed during that time: They invaded Georgia in 2008, took over Crimea in 2014 and started the war in the Donbas the same year. What did the Europeans do? Double down on their precipitious energy reliance on Russian fossil fuels. (Basically paying for Russia's aggression.) It's unimaginable that the US would stand by and allow Putin to take his aggression to a NATO country without proper retaliation. However, it's shameful that Europe seems so frightened by all of this merely due to their own intransigence, short sightedness and lack of clarity regarding the basic need for self-defense.

NATO's problem is that it incentivises free-loading. If you are European you get another country defend you and they pay you for it. Germany has used NATO as a make-work scheme for decades: They get thousands of American soldiers defend them, spend billions on bases, and use their defence budget to prop up its industry and R&D. The tut-tut how-dare-you attitude whenever America asks where all their money went is shameful.

Trump has done everything possible to give Putin and Russia hope and reason to continue fighting, to undermine Europe and NATO. He's lengthened the war by increasing Russian moral. The one good thing is that European defense spending will increase slightly. Not enough, but slightly. The bad thing is the fools and cowards that let defense spending in Europe decay to 1.2% are still in charge and they are mentally as incapable as ever. The ironic thing is that Trump told European leaders to increase defense spending in 2016 but they laughed at him and the press mocked him. One thing for sure is he will throw Ukraine and Europe under the bus. China will try to invade Taiwan between 2027 and 2030 probably with a naval blockade, we know that. America will be busy and Europe can't ride on America's coat tails for free anymore.

Disillusionment with modern governance is growing across Europe and the UK, as citizens increasingly feel that their governments prioritise external interests over their own well-being. At the heart of this discontent is the belief that leadership has lost its way, placing economic and political expediency above the security, identity, and cultural integrity of their nations. In Europe, the situation is particularly complex. While the European Union presents itself as a unified entity, functioning seamlessly on matters such as trade, business, and human rights, when it comes to military defence, it appears woefully dependent on external forces. The reliance on the United States for protection has become a point of contention. Despite the EU’s ability to act as a bloc on a range of issues, when real security concerns arise, it turns to the U.S. for aid rather than addressing its own responsibilities. This reluctance to stand firm on collective defence issues, exemplified by Germany’s hesitation to provide military support to Ukraine, signals that some European countries are more focused on securing economic stability, such as through cheap energy deals with Russia, than on protecting the values and unity of the EU. This disconnect between rhetoric and action leaves many Europeans frustrated. The notion of a unified Europe that can defend itself and its principles is increasingly seen as an illusion. When European countries fail to act as one in times of crisis, it erodes the credibility of the union itself. For those who believe in a stronger, more independent Europe, the reliance on American military aid is an unacceptable compromise that weakens both European security and identity. Across the Channel in the UK, frustrations take on a different form, though they stem from similar feelings of betrayal. In Britain, disillusionment centres on domestic policy, particularly with regard to immigration and national identity. There is a growing sentiment that the government prioritises the needs of illegal migrants over its own citizens. The perception that these migrants are given preferential access to public services, including housing and healthcare, fuels resentment among native citizens who feel left behind. Compounding this anger is the belief that British cultural traditions and national pride are being eroded to appease minority groups. Many citizens feel that celebrations like Christmas are being pushed aside in favour of more generic, neutral holidays to avoid causing offence. Displays of national symbols, such as the Union Jack, are seen as controversial or even racist, leading to a sense that British identity is being diluted. This leaves many wondering what, exactly, they are being asked to defend. Why should they fight for a country that, in their view, no longer values or protects the traditions and rights of its own people? In both Europe and the UK, the common thread is a deep sense of alienation from the state. Citizens feel increasingly disconnected from leadership that seems more interested in political correctness, international diplomacy, and economic convenience than in protecting the cultural and security needs of their own people. This disconnection raises fundamental questions about loyalty and duty. Why should citizens defend a nation that no longer seems to prioritise their interests or uphold the values that once defined it? Ultimately, the growing disillusionment with modern governance reflects a deeper crisis of identity and purpose. Whether in Europe’s reliance on the U.S. for defence or the UK’s perceived abandonment of its own citizens in favour of migrants and political correctness, the issue is the same: citizens feel abandoned by their leaders. As governments continue to prioritise external and minority interests, the question remains-what will be left to defend when the nation no longer reflects the values, culture, and identity of its people?

If it was as simple as American tax payers footing the bill. The US has been the world hegemon since last WW. Through that they have largely controlled the rules of the game. Including being the holder of the world reserve currency, allowing them to indirectly tax the entire global trade. Though the US doesn’t hold that position for free, it profits immensely from it, and so do their allies by proxy and almost everyone else as well. As they have probably been the most benign and generous superpower the wold has ever seen, though of course not without making sure to take the largest cut first and show they can beat anyone up that tries to challenge their supremacy. If the US is no longer willing to play that game then its allies are going to have to step up to fill the gap. Rebuild their militaries, acquire nuclear weapons to replace the US nuclear deterrence shield etc. etc. And we will live in a whole new, and much more dangerous world. With much more players fighting for who should get what share of the pie. Even as a Canadian, you might have to start thinking of adding your territories to their federation, less having to foot the bill for your own nuclear arsenal for deterrence.

Where we are devided in many countries with many opinions but constrained by the ideology to never want war again. This narative is limiting our deterence. They are beginning to make good use of their F16's and more aircraft are arriving. The Ukraine's are now building their own long-range missiles and ammunition. A lot of the weapons that Russia has are defective. Russia's economy and military production is collapsing. Russia's energy sales are declining and the price of oil is going down. The North Korean soldiers are not battle tested and most likely not as committed to winning as the Ukrainian's. Things will be more difficult if the US exits NATO. However, Europe has more than enough weaponry and financial resources to take on Putin and easily win. The UK certainly needs to increase it's forces and munitions, but that will not affect the outcome becuase Putin has to go through Europe to get to the UK...

Europe must buy European weapons rather than American ones and build its own nuclear defense under its own control. Make no mistake Europe has the knowledge, economy and population to match the US. It is no coincidence that the US government and presidents have previously opposed building an independent European defense. A US without its European allies will have a very, very difficult time against a rising China. The difference between the US and Europe is that the Americans believe that all problems can be solved with weapons.

Does anyone believe that Russia is capable of attacking Europe, it can only contemplate single countries and aims at those that are politically similar to itself. Of course if you can persuade a country to align with you it makes the process of conquest far easier, such as Ukraine was being manipulated and de weaponize , Belarus equally falls into this format.

Problem is that Russia does not make decisions based on same logic than Western countries do. Invading Ukraine was grazy by western logic.

Perhaps Europe needs to consider bearing more of the burden instead of expecting the US to provide the bulk of Ukraine’s support. The European members of NATO have had ample warning that the USA will not be there forever. Just blaming Trump doesn’t really cut it.

US has pushed Europe over the years to only complement NATO and avoid independent defence forces. US pulling out of NATO is disruptive in the short term as Europe will be left with defense gaps. Like a nuclear umbrella.. hence if Trump comes in. Seeking nuclear weapons will be most likely Europe's next step..
