Joyce Carol Oates wrote a story based on this case. It was titled, "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?"

(little late to the reply) I read the story not too long ago, and I had a strong feeling about the character (Arnold Friend) in "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" was based on a serial killer. I didn't know who, but I thought it was Ted Bundy at first. After I did some research, Charles Schmid was the first thing that popped up. I honestly think I am the only one in my composition II class about this sort of info ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This mostly forgotten true crime case is quite interesting. A shame only 1-2 photos each of Alleen, Gretchen and Wendy are available (for documentary reasons - I've considered writing a memorial to the three young ladies - definitely NOT Schmid!).

The guy at the end wishes we could identify the psycho killers somehow. Smitty slammed his cat against a tree repeatedly. People who abuse animals tht violently are often a threat to humans, as well. Cats are frequently the victims of people who go on to kill women.

DougsSpiderMan, yes man...one of the common signs of a Psychopath is that they kill small animals. But I don't if every Psychopath does that. I suspect many Psychopaths are born Killers! They are Satans in human form! If they are not caught after the 1st Murder, they will execute a 2nd Murder later on. And this will continue till they are caught.

We had just graduated in '63, my bff dated this weirdo. But after one time, she decided no more. H was talking weird sex, hostage etc. I think she barely got away. He asked me out too. He was a good looking guy. But with the dark makeup, the fake nose thing, the fake mole and the beer cans squashed in his boots, to make him look taller. I knew he was nuts. We would cruise Johnnys' Fat boy parking lot. He would be sitting on the seat of his car, calling for girls to go with him for a ride, a good time. Geeze. I heard he told a jail inmate, "there are more out there." Glad the prison inmates took care of him. Never heard what happened to the guy that helped him rape the original girl he bludgeoned to death.

Charles Schmid, is a born Narcissistic Psychopath! They all have a "dark mind" . They are Devils in human form. If not caught they will keep on Killing humans for years.

Haha well I guess no one will believe me on the internet and I can't blame people for not believing, but I do work with her and she did confirm that he actually did wear crushed cans in his boots to make him look taller. She also said the girls around were attracted to him but she didn't understand why because he weirded her out. 3 years since I posted my first post - I realize now how much of a historical thing this is and I have access to someone that was there. I'm going to ask her more questions this week about what she can remember about him and reply to my own post here about what she says.

@@TheHaratashi blow them off. I once posted on a story about a serial killer a friend of mine used to date her. One person basically called me a liar when she demanded proof and I told her I didn't have to prove anything to her. Then she evidently got her feelings hurt. thought I was rude, didn't matter if she was rude to me. As I told her, if I was B.S.ing, I'd said I had dated the woman.

A bunch of feature length films are Smooth Talk with Laura Dern and Treat Williams based on the JCO short story Soundwave14 mentions, which is based on the crimes. Also the film Dead Beat, shot in Tucson in the 90's which is more directly about the crimes. The Todd Killings with Ed Asner. Dawn, the short by Rose McGowan. The Lost from 2006 which is based on a Jack Ketchum fiction book.
